The Black Swan restaurant is startlingly inventive in its use of space, architecture and cuisine to transport gastronomes back to the "Swinging 20s". So it should come as no surprise that its mezzanine cocktail bar, The Powder Room, is similarly inventive.
A sexier Gatsby-esque bar, The Powder Room is a reference to the private rooms used by ladies in the 1920s to preen themselves in, and was chosen for its association with the notion of beauty, glamour and sex appeal.
Nestled in a corner of Raffles Place – in the thick of the Central Business District – the bar is a new favourite hangout of the discerning executive looking to unwind with a quintessential martini or a dram of aged scotch.
The short list of original cocktails is unfailingly good: lots of nice twists on classics but never veer from the essential cocktail principles of balance, harmony and taste.
Star cocktails include the Moral Hazard (a take on the Old Fashioned, crafted with apricot-infused 15-year-old bourbon, honey water and orange zest; $19), Golden Parachute (15-year-old single malt whiskey stirred with fragrant vanilla bean, pure maple syrup and livened with mandarin zest; $19) and Cecil Sour (15-year-old single malt shaken with vanilla, mandarin peel and egg white, served with salted dark chocolate; $19). The classics are handled equally brilliantly, and bespoke orders masterfully crafted.
Food wise, The Powder Room’s repertoire of bar snacks is a small reflection of its sister resto downstairs: freshly shucked oysters (from $36), crostinis (from $9), sliders (from $12) and more. Did you know that The Powder Room butlers pass around free signature sliders on Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10pm to midnight? More info on the free sliders here.
Resident and guest DJs will take the decks on weekend evenings, but if you prefer things a little more intimate, a private room in the building's former basement vault seats 12.
