Thai noodles fit for royalty

This stall has a very catchy and unforgettable name. In case you are wondering, it is not opened by the former Prime Minister of Thailand.

Owner Jaesen Ng initially wanted to name his stall after the Thai King when he started business in 1993. But when the name of a monarch was not allowed to be used, he went for the next best alternative–The Prime Minister.

This Thai-styled beef noodle already has a huge fan base, and the stall is known to serve halal beef noodle soup without the use of tenderiser, preservatives as well as MSG.

We were very excited when we found out about the stall as the earlier political situation in Thailand did not allow us to visit the country for some authentic beef noodles. Little did we know that the real thing was available at our doorstep!

Pad Thai

Jaesen said that he used to live in Thailand, and since he came back to Singapore 16 years ago, found himself craving the famous MBK (Mahboonkrong) beef noodle soup, and actually managed to get the owner to share her recipe.

We ordered the value bowl ($4.50) and it arrived ‘blanketed’ with generous portions of parsley, basil leaves and beansprouts. The kway teow was slippery smooth and flat, with a distinct taste that totally reminded us of those we had in Thailand.

The first few mouthfuls of the soup was not as flavourful as we’d like it to be, but once you get to the bottom of the bowl, you can savour the essence of the broth, perfected by long hours on the stove, usually cooked from the night before.

A recent addition–pad Thai with prawns ($4.00), was a draw with the Thai-styled rice noodles with crunchy beansprouts and crushed peanuts. We liked that the pad Thai stayed faithful with the addition of customarily-used seasoning such as tamarind juice and fish sauce. Overall, it was quite an enjoyable meal!
