Jamie Oliver's first restaurant in Asia opened on between July and August 17 July 2013 at VivoCity mall, Singapore.
The celebrity chef has appointed Gary Clarke, former Head of Academy for Senior Chefs at Jamie’s Italian Restaurant Group UK, to oversee the daily operations at the Singapore outlet.
It is not yet known how often Oliver will be at the Singapore restaurant.
"I can’t tell you how excited I am to be opening a restaurant in Singapore. I think VivoCity is a fantastic location and I’m delighted to be able to bring the Jamie’s Italian experience to the people of this wonderful city," he mentioned in a press release.
The Singapore website for Jamie's Italian is up and live and indicates that the 210-seater restaurant will be loacted at level 1 and their opening hours will be 11.30 am to 11.00pm.
Jamie's Italin is a walk in restaurant, although reservations may be made via their own website.
Recruitment for senior management positions began in February and Singapore's chefs have been encouraged to apply.
Clarke, who has aleady relocated to Singapore, began working with Oliver in 2009. As Head of Academy for Senior Chefs (2012), he oversaw training and development for all head, senior and sous chefs.
Prior to working with Jamie's Italian, Clarke worked at leading restaurants in London and New Zealand. He also ran a hospitality business of his own.
Commenting on his role, Clarke says, “I’m so excited to be in Singapore and involved in opening our very first Jamie’s Italian in Asia. Singaporeans are crazy about food and I’m looking forward to welcoming them into the Jamie’s Italian family."
What to expect at Jamie's Italian VivoCity
“We hope that our dishes at Jamie’s Italian reflects the passionate, humble and sociable attitude of Italians towards food and that Singaporeans will enjoy being welcomed into the Jamie’s Italian family,” said Clarke in a press release.
On the menu will be Jamie's Italian's signature antipasti planks (Italian-style cured meats, tins of tomatoes, cheeses like buffalo mozzarella and aged pecorino, chilli jams and Gaeta olives, $13.50-$17) and fresh pasta made daily on the premises.
Pastas dishes that will be offered from day one at Jamie's Italian VivoCity are the prawn linguine (pan-fried prawns with tomatoes, chilli, rocket and fennel, $17/$25), tagliatelle bolognese (ragu of beef, pork, Chianti and parmesan with crunchy herbed breadcrumbs, $15/$22) and crab risotto (acquerello rice with lemon, crab, chilli and samphire, $19/$28.50).
For mains: a grilled thyme-, rosemary-, garlic-marinated half-chicken from Toh Thye San Farm in Malaysia, cooked Tuscan-style – over an open fire to seal in the flavours – served with the punchy and tangy Pizziola sauce ($28). Another one to look out for is Jamie's Italian Wagyu burger, packed with smoked mozzarella, pancetta, sticky balsamic onions, tomato, pickles and chillies ($27.50).
Graffiti artworks have been a distinctive feature of several of Oliver's restaurants. The Naked Chef and his team recently called out to local artists in Singapore to compete for a chance at creating a 10.5 by 2.3 metre mural for the Singapore outlet. The contest closed on 1 April and it was announced that local artist Mohammad Azlan Ramlan has been chosen to design the distinctive piece of art for the Singapore outlet. Ramlan who goes by the name of 'Ceno2' is a college art teacher and mentor for troubled youths.
