Delicious fast food that's healthy, too!

Busy lifestyles often equal convenient food which often isn't very good for us.

In fact, according to the 2010 National Nutrition Survey, the average meal on the island is often of poor nutritional value, high in saturated fat, low in fibre and whole grains.

That’s why the Health Promotion Board (HPB) launched its Healthy Dining Programme and searched for the right partner food establishments to provide us with much healthier food options. These include quick food service providers as Subway and Smoothie King, which offer nutritious meals that we can all enjoy on-the-go at our convenience.

At Subway, there are eight combinations of Fresh Fit™ subs to choose from, and all come with just six grams fat or less. These model meals include the Oven Roasted Chicken Breast, Ham, Turkey Breast, Turkey Breast & Ham, Roast Beef, Subway Club, Chicken Teriyaki and Veggie Delite. And then there’s our very favourite sandwich, the Subway Club — a combination of lean and tender sliced turkey breast, roast beef and ham filling between whole wheat bread, topped with fresh vegetables and low-fat mayonnaise as a condiment. To complete your Fresh Fit™ Meal, Subway recommends substituting the cookie and soda with a cup of low-fat Meiji yoghurt and a bottle of Dasani mineral water.

As the World Cup fever kicks off, Subway launched its health campaign featuring Pele, widely regarded as the greatest football player of all time. For a limited time only, you can enjoy a bottle of Ayataka Green Tea at the promotional price of $1 when you purchase any of the Subway Fresh Fit subs. Subway also offers four breakfast flatbread meals, which contain less than 400 calories, with three-inch flatbread, hash brown and a cup of warm coffee or tea of your choice. You can have the flatbread simply with egg and cheese, or with an addition of bacon, sausage or ham.

For its part, Smoothie King offers you a healthy dose of fruit goodness. You can now mix-and-match a smoothie and a food item to form a meal combo that contains only 500 calories or less. For smoothie options there is the Berry Beautiful, Angel Food, Gladiator Pineapple Mango, Slim n’ Trim Strawberry and Apple Kiwi Kale. We loved the Apple Kiwi Kale smoothie, one of the recently introduced Veggie Blends that aims to “please your body, fool your taste buds.” Rich in vitamins and minerals, kale makes up a key element of this concoction!

To go with the smoothie, you’ll enjoy the Spicy Chicken Wrap that comes with chunks of grilled chicken breast, diced jalapeños, lettuce and sweet chili sauce — we did! The wrap is wholesome, tasty and fresh. Tortillas will also be introduced later this year for a healthier wrap with higher content of whole grains.

The best part is that HPB is the launch of its loyalty card programme, ‘Healthy Go Lucky’, to reward diners who chose healthier meal options. Simply pick up a card from participating Healthy Dining partner outlets, get a stamp on the card for each healthy choice dish purchase. After purchasing five dishes, you can drop it off at participating outlet and stand a chance to win $300,000 worth of prizes. For more information, go to www.healthygolucky.sg
