Finding affordable organic produce in Singapore is, admittedly, difficult. Most of our consummables originate from far-flung countries, adding to the cost of already-pricey organically grown vegetables and fruits. Yet, if you’ve made the commitment to pesticide and chemical-free shopping for your health, where can you go?
We have scoured the island’s offerings – from locally grown to freshly imported – to present the best bang for your buck. With a little advanced planning and the availability of organic online stores and delivery services, shopping smart and buying groups of items from different grocers is much less painless than you think.
Best Organic Food
For home-delivered organic veggies, with physical store open until midnight
This online ordering portal delivers island-wide for a minimum order of $20. The brainchild of well-established local grocer Chang Ah Beng Trading, customers can select from a wide variety of organic vegetables grown both locally and abroad (Australia, US, China, Malaysia). Their prices are marginally more than a couple of their competitors, but they do provide the best value for items like sweet potatoes ($6/ per kg), potatoes ($6 per kg), broccoli ($5 per 500g), cherry tomatoes ($4 per 400g) and ginger ($5 per 500g). Deliveries are made only on weekday afternoons but for those who miss the order cut-off, their physical shop in Hougang is open daily until midnight. Existing customers can enjoy a five to seven per cent discount for new customer referrals; enquire directly with the store for more details.

For an organic grocery store in your neighbourhood
If you have to nip to the store at the last minute for items, Fairprice Finest is a good reasonably-priced option, with surprisingly comprehensive selection of both fresh and packaged organic items. While fruits were dear compared to their non-organic varieties, the store had the best value for cucumbers ($3.65 per 500g), carrots ($3.50 per 500g) and tofu, plus a great selection of organic pasta, noodles, sauces and long-life milk. Bonus: order your dried goods online which will be sent to you at an additional delivery charge of $7 to $10.

Zenxin Organic Singapore
For a prepackaged box of organic veggies
Zenxin grows most of its organic produce across the Causeway in Malaysia – which certainly helps to lower the carbon footprint as well. Enjoy some of the lowest prices on the island for an extensive variety of organic produce and dried goods, available either at their wholesale centre in Pasir Panjang or through their online shop. The slightly more adventurous can opt for a prepackaged organic box, which includes a seasonal selection of two or three leafy greens, and a variety of fresh roots, stems, leaf and flower vegetables, seeds and fruit. Large boxes are priced at $60 and small boxes at $30.

CRITIC'S PICK Green Circle Eco Farm
Buy directly from a farm
Green Circle Eco Farm earns brownie points not only for offering some of the best value, but also for the fact that most of their supply is grown on their farm at Lim Chu Kang. If you can only be bothered to order from one grocer, we recommend these guys for the most affordable and extensive selection of fresh produce such as vegetables, fruits, herbs and condiments. Opt for salad leaves like the herbal Malaysian ulam rajah ("The King's Salad", $2 per 100g) or for $30 get a basket of seven kinds of fruit and vegetables. Remaining prices of products are available online only and home deliveries are currently made on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, depending on where you stay.
