Finding affordable organic produce in Singapore is, admittedly, difficult. Most of our consummables originate from far-flung countries, adding to the cost of already-pricey organically grown vegetables and fruits. Yet, if you've made the commitment to shop for pesticide- and chemical-free goods, where should you go?
HiungryGoWhere scoured the island’s offerings – from locally grown to freshly imported products – to present the most value-for-money items. With a little advanced planning and online organic stores and delivery services at your disposal, shopping smart and buying groups of items from different grocers is much less painless than you think.
Best Organic Food
Home-delivered organic veggies, with physical store open until midnight
This online ordering portal delivers islandwide for a minimum order of $20. The brainchild of well-established grocer Chang Ah Beng Trading, it offers a wide variety of organic vegetables grown both locally and abroad (Australia, US, China, Malaysia). The prices are marginally more than what a few of their competitors offer, but the store does provide the best value for items such as sweet potatoes ($6 per kg), potatoes ($6 per kg), broccoli ($5 per 500g), cherry tomatoes ($4 per 400g) and ginger ($5 per 500g). Deliveries are made only on weekday afternoons but for those who miss the deadline, it has a physical shop in Hougang that is open daily until midnight.

An organic grocery store in your neighbourhood
If you have to nip to the store at the last minute for items, Fairprice Finest is an option for reasonably priced products, with a surprisingly comprehensive selection of both fresh and packaged organic items. While fruits are dear compared to the non-organic varieties, the store has the best value for cucumbers ($3.65 per 500g), carrots ($3.50 per 500g) and tofu, as well as a great selection of organic pasta, noodles, sauces and long-life milk.

Zenxin grows most of its organic produce across the Causeway in Malaysia – which certainly helps to lower the carbon footprint as well. Enjoy some of the lowest prices around for an extensive variety of organic produce and dried goods, available either at its wholesale centre in Pasir Panjang or through its online shop. The slightly more adventurous buyer may opt for a prepackaged organic box, which includes a seasonal selection of two or three leafy greens, and a variety of fresh roots, stems, leafy and flower vegetables, seeds and fruit. CRITIC'S PICK Green Circle Eco Farm
Buy directly from a farm
Green Circle Eco Farm earns brownie points not just for offering some of the best value, but also for how most of its food supply is grown on its farm at Lim Chu Kang. If you prefer to order from just one grocer, we recommend these guys for the most affordable and extensive selection of fresh produce such as vegetables, fruits, herbs and condiments. Opt for salad leaves such as the herbal Malaysian ulam rajah ("The King's Salad", $2 per 100g) or for $30, get a basket of seven kinds of fruit and vegetables.

The Fish Wives
Buy hormone-free meats online
Originally set up in Hong Kong in 1992 by the mother and aunt of current owner Rebecca Forwood, The Fishwives eventually found itself delivering to the shores of Singapore in 2002. Even though it is now called The Fish Wives, the online store sells beef, lamb, chicken and pork as well. All the products are hormone-free, and spared from antibiotics and genetically modified impurities. The pricing for various meats differ, with chicken being the cheapest, coming in at $19.50 for a 1.3kg hormone- and antibiotic-free chicken. If you would rather have fish, the ORA King Salmon (from New Zealand) is $70 for 1kg. All chicken and fish products are certified halal and all New Zealand salmon that have not been flavoured have kosher certification.
