For a European noon feast at $32++ per person
Inspired by the rustic charm of the French countryside, Cocotte whips up fare that is French, fresh and seasonal. Portions are generous, and the décor whimsical. Its weekday-only three-course set lunch ($32++ per person) is a worthy choice – start with a fresh garden salad, then choose from one of three mains. We like the moules frite (live blue mussels cooked in a mix of white wine, garlic and parsley) served with fries. For dessert, we recommend the chocolate mousse, made from Valrhona araguani chocolate and served with Chantilly and brandied cherries. Coffee or tea is served after.

Ding Dong
For Asian-fusion signatures at $35++ per person
Apart from the obvious oriental vogue that sweeps through this Ann Siang inhabitant, Ding Dong lures with its comprehensive three-course set lunch menu ($35++ per person) – complete with a glass of wine or a pint of Singha beer and unlimited servings of rice. For starters, the kingfish sashimi with picked daikon, wasabi and yuzu dressing stands out, and we recommend the tender 48-hour beef cheek rendang with rice puree and crispy herbs as a main. For dessert, try their modern interpretation of the Malacca chendol or a serving of lemon brioche with pink guava ice cream.

This Italian ristorante is a slightly upscale establishment that serves affordable Sicilian dishes. Its well-priced two-course set lunch ($16.80++ per person) incorporates authentic favourites, with a potato and leek soup for starters, followed by squid ink tonnarelli with calamari and garlic for mains. Salt Tapas and Bar
For well-crafted variety and flavours at $33.50++ per person
A stellar choice for those working in the Ciy Hall area, this celebrity chef (Luke Mangan) restaurant incorporates various cuisine styles, but mainly Spanish with an Australian twist. Its three-course lunch set menu ($33.50++ per person) is thoughtful and caters to all tastes – kingfish sashimi and taco of tempura prawn being two of the five entrees and for mains, the sumac spiced veal and pork meatballs is a good choice. The meal can be topped-up with a side of patatas bravas (fried potatoes), chopped salad or sweet potatoes. Finish with a dessert or a cheese plate.

Sumiya Charcoal Grill Izakaya
For extremely affordable Japanese sets at $12.80++ per person
Take the elevator up to Orchard Central, level 12, for this Japanese eatery that has a communal dining concept – long tables surrounded by simple padded stools. The lunch menu sports a series of sets that is ideal for a quick meal, with the most eye-catching being the Kagoshima wagyu beef steak set (premium beef steak served with chawanmushi, Japanese pickles, soba-styled salad, rice and miso soup, $28.80). Do book a table and arrive early, as there is only six of this particular set daily. Cheaper, but still as good is the sashimi goma chazuke set (three kinds of sashimi on rice with dashi tea to pour over, miso soup, salad, pickles and chawanmushi, $12.80).
