The healthy way to eating out

With more partners joining The Health Promotion Board’s Healthy Dining Programme there are more ways than ever to get a healthy meal!

There are always new eateries opening up in Singapore, which is why we are eating out, more often than ever before. In fact, according to the National Nutrition Survey 2010, 60 per cent of Singapore residents eat out at least four times a week. However, less than 10 per cent of all eateries offer healthy options.

Fortunately, the Health Promotion Board has partnered up with a number of food and beverage outlets committed to serving options that use healthier ingredients and lower in calories. Swensen’s, Soup Restaurant and Quiznos are among these partners.

Swensen’s Chicken VictoriaSwensen’s Chicken Victoria, grilled chicken breast served with creamy Victoria sauce

Swensen’s is of course famous for its ice cream concoctions, but now, their new menu includes six healthier low-calorie dishes. Try the Chicken Victoria, a steamed well-seasoned chicken breast lightly grilled and served in a creamy Victoria sauce reminiscent of béchamel but lighter and with a garlicky twist. Fish lovers should try the Pesto Salmon, Grilled Barramundi with Garlic Aioli or Grilled Fish Sambal. All three come with creamy mashed potato and blanched vegetables.

Soup Restaurant’s Earthen Bowl  Soup Restaurant’s Earthen Bowl with steamed brown rice, chicken and Samsui ginger sauce

Another family favorite, Soup Restaurant, has also shaped up their meal selections with healthier options. For less than 500 calories, the newly customised Earthen Bowl with Chicken and Samsui Ginger Sauce comes with wholesome brown rice and chunks of skinless juicy thigh meat. Other Earthen Bowl Steamed Rice options are also available with brown rice for extra fiber at no extra charge. Soup Restaurant has also come up with Braised Golden Sprouts with Baby Cabbage, a light and flavourful dish with a hint of sweetness from the wolfberries and the irresistible umami flavour of shredded dried scallops.

Quiznos’ Turkey Ranch Quiznos’ Turkey Ranch and Swiss Sub in wholewheat brown bread

Also eager to join the healthy dish wagon, Quiznos now has a lower-calorie five-inch sub, instead of the usual six-inch, along with options from their salad menu. The subs are customised so you get the best combination. You can try the Honey Mustard Chicken Sub with chicken, bacon and honey mustard dressing or Turkey Ranch and Swiss Sub with turkey ham and ranch dressing. Both are laid on the five-inch whole wheat brown bread, topped with Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and onions. For an even leaner, low-carb option, choose the Chicken Caesar Salad with fresh lettuce, diced tomatoes, onions, diced grilled chicken and ranch dressing, on the side.
