Personal recommendation - Cafe Domus at 124 Owen Road. You can check it out here.

You can even take the MRT to Farrer Park station and take a short walk. I've been there but haven't posted a review. I'm willing to bet that you won't regret going there for drinks and chill out (unless it rains on you!).

sc leong >> nope, tea cafe is abit chinese...they have a large variety of chinese teas.
food wise, there is an unique tea egg boiled for a few hours and some traditional chinese pastry snacks.
ambience is nice and quiet. very zen :P

for chinese tea appreciation, i still prefer Tea Chapter and another tea outlet at Chinatown. I go there for the full works of tea appreciation. :) There are snacks and games and novels to while away time there too.

Dempsey's Hut at Minden Road is another good bet.
It's across from the golf driving range and church, a short walk in from the junction with Holland and Napier Road. Note: this is the junction right after the embassies, and before the Dempsey Road junction.

Look for the bright lights and survivor-like torches to find it. A very casual open-air place, it was here way before the poseur Dempsey crowd down the road arrived. Everyone I've taken here always enjoyed it, but beware of wet weather!

While I'm at it, I might as well just reveal my other hidden finds.
Green Valley Cafe's at 1 Bah Soon Pah Road, where Green Valley Farms are. It opens in the evenings only. If you come along Sembawang Road from the north, it's on your left after you pass the Khatib Camp main gate. If you see a Tiger Beer lit signboard just after Khatib Camp, watch for a left turn soon after and that's Bah Soon Pah Road.

Unlike my other favourites, this is sheltered but still close to nature as it's next to the vegetable farm! May be crowded if live football is being screened.

Explorer Zone is at Bishan Park 1 - the side near Sin Ming. It's very near the Sin Ming Ave car park for Bishan Park. Another casual outdoor location, right in my backyard too.

The Edge Bar & Bistro on the roof of the building at Marina South Pier.
Run by the Singapore Explorer guys who also run the Pier Eleven Restaurant downstairs. You can also try the deck chairs at Pier Eleven facing the sea if the restaurant isn't too crowded that day.

It's really a matter of perspective. I can tell you that most aren't far from the nearest public transport or main road.

-For Cafe Domus, there's Farrer Park MRT.
There are public buses that stop on the main road very near to:
-Dempsey's Hut (I take bus 7 here if I want to drink; there are many others that stop opposite Botanic Gardens),
-Green Valley Cafe (the buses that stop on Sembawang Road like 167, 980...),
-Little Part 1 is easily accessible by buses that go to the stop after Thomson Plaza going north (many including 167, 980, 165, 166...),
-Explorer Zone (either 410, 162, 52 along Sin Ming Ave or many other buses along AMK Ave 1 with a short walk across Bishan Park)

Only the Edge is a challenge?

If you need more specific instructions on how to get to these places I'd be happy to provide them.

i love the veg farm at GreenValley, when I was last there, they were still building their cafe area. Thks for the update again Contrarian.

if u go at the right time, I recommend purchase of their sweet corn, "Ribena" fruit and year round american aloe vera (eaten with honey and lime) ....yumyum yum.....

MN, the streetdirectory.com bus guide is not good enough.
For one, it's SBS only. Secondly the map doesn't show you where the bus stop is - it only describes it.

You'd be much better off using the Mighty Minds directory that shows you the stops, together with the Transitlink eguide on their website, which lets you do a road enquiry as well as a bus enquiry.

well, for starters, so long as i can reach by bus/mrt, i still ok.

y i say inaccessible is tt, these places are difficult to convince frens to go if no car. *can oredi hear complaints*

finding directions is not a problem for me. :) m a frequent user of the streetdirectory coupled with the bus guides.

long time back, (smoker frenly) chill out spots aplenty... now with the new law imposed, makes a lota chill out spots, not so comfy to chill. the hassle to hunt for the yellow box suffices to spoil the day.

so, for a change... i now have preference to haunt neighborhood coffeshops/ prata-shops. no dresscode issues... most importantly, wallet frenly too... hehehehehe

Since I'm not a smoker, I'm all for banning smoking indoors.

hahaha, you should see a smoker on a 18hr flight. Cigarette has to be one of the worst addictions.

Buy shares of tobacco companies. They're one of the few legit addictive substances.
Altria (formerly Philip Morris) is one of my favourite stock investments.

I think investing money on companies like Philip Morris is bad karma.

Socially responsible investing? You might well avoid investing in companies linked to
armaments and weaponry - Boeing, ST Engineering, Thales...
alcohol - LVMH, Diageo, APB, F&N, Thai Beverage...
gambling - Genting, Berjaya Sports Toto...
pornography - media companies that carry content on their channels or productions
Perhaps also banks that finance any of these industries or their projects.

Not forgetting that tobacco companies were heavily involved in food production - examples of Kraft and Nabisco were owned by tobacco groups for many many years until 2007.

Living in Singapore where prostitution is legal but pornography isn't, where Singapore Pools provides probably the largest funds to charitable and community causes, I don't cast value or moral judgements on others' life choices so easily.

with all due respect, i'd agree that non-smokers deserve their own spaces as well. sometimes i feel they should've given operators a choice, perhaps different licensing for smoking/non-smoking operations. that way, each'd have their own space.

as for smokers on a long haul flight... it calls for creativity & improvision.

here's a tip for smokers going cold turkey while travelling long haul... have some gauze on stand by, when the urge arises.... fill gauze with the tobacco leaf from the ciggie, roll the gauze up, tuck it under the gum... should last u for a few solid hours.

this technique is also applicable for NS/reservist missions when naked flame/smoke is not permissable
