We must thank god that most of us are healthy and physically independent. Let's not forget our not so fortunate fellow citizens who may be sick, or may not even have three square meals on the table daily. I am actually toying with an idea of an annual HGW charitable event, and hope the crew of HGW and my fellow makan kakis here can support this charitable cause. Do give your kind suggestions as I feel each of us should give back to society and help the less fortunate. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and god bless : )
BA....we all need to do our part no matter how big or small. At times, when I'm having a meal and see an old folk walking past looking thru the window with those sad looking eyes, I feel sad and guilty that I'm enjoying a good meal while they are so pitiful. Seriously, we cannot eradicate this unfortunate situation for good, but we can all do our part , and alleviate it by doing our small part to make their lives alittle more comfortable. Pls give it some thought and your suggestions. Thanks
Thanks DG....I hope my fellow HGW members will support this worthy cause. Thanks again for looking at this thread and giving it some thoughts + suggestions.
I think it would be a good idea to hear from everybody (some might have extensive experience on this front, and alert us to what works and what does not work, the pitfalls in following a certain course of action etc etc), and when all the suggestions have been laid out, we can take a decision to move in a certain direction and plan on the implementation part.
Execution is key here.....It would be great if the HGW community can support this strongly - we will gladly do the legwork for this!
Ok...have a rough idea. We can have a restaurant who'll charge us a norminal fee per pax for meals and drinks, and we can sell each seat or tables at a profit....though the amt will still be very attractive per pax.....hopefully cheaper than usual....and the difference...ie the profit will be donated to charity. Plus.....we'll also have a charity auction...and most items will hopefully be donated by sponsors. What do u guys think ?
It will be even better that we can have a restaurant to sponsor the annual event. We can sell tickets per person or per table, and all amts will be donated for charitable causes.
Thanks JW for your generosity....that's a good start ! But I will try and get sponsors to come in. Hopefully, they can donate some $$$ for this good cause as well : )
Basically, the more we can get restaurants to sponsor the event, the more we get to give to charity from what we can collect from people who buy the tickets
can can, office is currently quite bare, so will wait for entire crew to return before we can get a proper discussion on this!
But please keep the suggestions coming everyone......legwork we can do, but brains/ideas, the more the better you know! Gives us all food for thought......so please don't stop on this thread!
I'll personally provide legwork, paperwork, sponsors and $$$ if necessary to make this annual event a success. Thanks DG, HGW crew and my fellow HGW makan kakis.
not necessarily.....but would like to hear more ideas so we know whether its better as a day thing, as a night thing, as an all day affair (???), the kind of venues that are suitable, what kind of ways/ideas we can utilise to get people to contribute more or support more, bringing together the HGW foodie community to be fully behind this etc etc.....
i mean a one off thing? or can stretch over a few days. we can invite schools to set up their own charity booths and sell things. but this will involve more work i guess.
We'll probably work our butts out in the day....but we'll have a nice makan session in the evening with our fellow HGW kakis. End of the day, it feels good to have done something for the less fortunate. That's the very least we can do for them to make them happy.....and life alittle more tolerable.
You are most welcome DG....I hope all of you guys can help in anyway you can. The little things that we contribute will bring a smile on their face, and improve their living conditions as well.
But in terms of beneficiaries, I know we should not discriminate but I am just wondering. Can we try to find beneficiaries that are really the lesser known or virtually unknown types, namely most of those v small ones that barely survive sometimes? With all due respect, those high profile ones, altho they too need charity, are often in the beneficiary list for all other charitable events. Whereas the small ones, well, are hardly in the list cos they are virtually unknown. Personally I feel that these small ones who slog to try and survive to maintain the organisation prob deserve more help.
At the same time, I am not sure if you guys and gals have heard of VSA aka Very Special Arts? Seriously at this moment I am not sure how to combine food and arts. Kids from VSA are usually from various backgrounds, autistic, HI (hearing impaired), hyperactive, down syndrome, etc etc. This organisation tries to use music and arts to help these kids by involving them in the arts. They also have a annual children's camp for kids 12 and below. Am just wondering is it possible somehow that HGW can be involved in the camp or other activities that they may have?
***u know, even though e tot of being wif kids of various handicaps may seem daunting, its actually v different when u are actually with them. For starters, it will open a whole new perspective towards ppl wif handicap and their difficulties. At least for me (I joined the camp once whilst in uni), I could briefly experienced wat was it like to be a caregiver of such a child. Magnify that experience many many many times and seriously its really amazing wat the parents go thru. And despite the difficult moments, when the kids show their appreciation in the only way they know how (unconventional to us), u cant help but feel really touched and love them to bits.
Another is, maybe can consider FSC (family service centre). Over here, as some of you may know, are kids from broken families or simply families with problems. E.G like both parents are drug abusers or in the changi resort. Currently I volunteer at my company's involvement in bringing the kids from FSC for outings and meals as well as the elderly from AWWA and other old folks home whenever my schedule permits.
So may I suggest, instead of just donating moolah, we can organise an outing instead. The smiles and looks of anticipation and excitement on their faces are really priceless. Cos seriously, for these ppl, they prob hardly hv a chance at all to experience.
cloudgal....I agree with you. It's the lesser known organizations that need help most. They are the ones that are on HGW's priority to disburse funds to them to meet their basic needs. I hope you can rope in your friends, family members etc to take part in making this annual event. Not just raising moolah....but we'll try and invite them to have a nice meal or outing. The little things we do for them will bring joy to their lives. I hope all of you will try and lend a helping hand to make this worthy cause a perpetual success.
i noticed that cloudgal suggested FSC..i was going to mention that. my mom is a teacher i/c of welfare at her school and it is sad to hear about pri school children not having enough money to eat at school or to buy school books and the school does do their part to help these kids get by by provinding them with pocket money for school and school books from their seniors but i hope that we can make an effort to give them the chance to have new school books and new school uniforms and shoes..we could also conduct little workshops or camps for them and expose them to places like the zoo or sungei buloh..shine a light on thier lives and allow them a day or a few days not thinking or worrying about their situation at home
For elderly, most likely we have to bring the event to them but mostly i think they would enjoy some company and noise in their life rather than get a lump sum of $$$ and dump it in the old folks home.
For children, orphans? perhaps outing will be better? Food outing? If getting money is the key then a series of food events may be more in line with HGW's theme though there is a need to work out the format of the whole deal in details....
u know, even tho the ppl may be handicapped in some way or another, they hv talents too...was a tiny coordinator in a hearing impaired camp before....even tho they can only sign to communicate, its amazing to see various talents in them, such as drama, etc...
do u know tt they can dance too? even tho they cant hear the music? u jus need to turn on the music louder and make it heavy on bass and beats...they feel it and dance...
ever watching song signing before? its lovely....i may still hv a clip of a song signing of "Colours of the Wind". simply lovely.
