Posted By: PANERAIDay ? Evening would be better...right ?
harder to get sponsor for space in evenings though.... most restaurants would be open to a 3-6 time slot where it does not clash heavily with their peak hour sales... unless you have some good idea to get around this? =)

PG....I do not have vast resources...I'm just a normal layman like everybody at HGW....even if I do have what you've mentioned, I will still contribute whatever I can....be it time, money or legwork etc.... It makes me feel good as a fellow human being to help someone in need of real help. I'm doing this not for any recognition, but feel there is a need to help this group of people that genuinely deserve help.

I would recommend the food charity Food From the Heart.

For the unfamiliar, Food from the Heart (FFTH) started with the Bread Distribution Programme in February 2003, and has been channeling unsold bread from bakeries and hotels to welfare organizations, needy families and individuals since then. The programme is based on the willingness of bakeries, hotels and that of the volunteers to carry out missions to save bread on a daily basis, thus avoiding bread wastage.

Today, the free bread is being delivered to 95 welfare homes in Singapore, as well as to more than 3,700 needy individuals directly (under the Self Collection Centre Programme and Food Goodie Bag Programme). Every month, FFTH serves 11,000 beneficiaries.

I've always thought this is a great concept, and this would fit in well with the HGW theme.

just scanned thru the posts...seems like ppl r keen

    2 Key suggestions:
    1) fund raising throu charity dinner via sales of ticket for less known VWOs(voluntary welfare organisations) by Pman
    2) organised outing with chosen VWOs by cc
    3) HGW support

great ideas...I would like to put in some input for all to consider...I hope that alll will not be offended as i may appear to be a wet blanket, its just to cover as many angles as possible.

    - what is the goal of the doing this charity work for HGW? I think that DG needs to set these goals.

    - do a needs assessments, what r the specific needs of the organisation u r trying to help.

    - choose an event / program, and organisation that fits into the goals

    - r the goals LT or ST or both

    - ask yourself what is the purpose of doing this charity work for yourself? what do you expect from it?

    - the suggested ideas have already been done n is currently being done by others. it is fairly common (not a bad thing), these r fairly ST activities. its a touch n go affair. do the job n bye. BUT may lead to LT co-operations.

    - these organisations have their own goals n needs , n hence may demand an input into your action plan. r u willing to accept their input? it may become their marketing tool for other fund raising events...

    - be prepared for mental and physical demands on you.

    - you are asking someone in need to open up to you, are YOU ready to take it in? how much are u willing to take it in? be wary of your own emotional state, as it may trigger other personal responses...

    My personal view n suggestions:
    - Most charities already have well organised ST events and fund raising (they will most likely welcome more)

    - have you consider a LT relationship with your chosen charity...

    - lets be specific,
example 1: orphanage- these kids craves attention n needs a Friend, r u gonna do a 1day food outing charity event n go away feeling great, while the kids enjoy the day, n then its back to the same old routine, while waiting for the next group of volunteers? Or would u commit to a year long , monthly meet up program to befriend them n to offer them a "normal" friendship....

    example 2: old age home.

example 3: ppl with mental health issues.

    example 4:ppl with intellectual disabilities.

consider 2-4, their needs, n what can u do for them in the ST n LT. BUT you also need to consider for yourself n know your own limitations, not recommended to take on more than you can eat.

Sorry for the Long post...can be longer ... but its enough for now I hope...please consider the BIG picture

Sc thanks for injecting some perspective on the issue...i do think many of us really want to help but did not consider the whole extend of things. Its like having a dog..looks fun but responsibilities do come with it and setting the right expectations will go a long way in this matter. =)

thks guys for having me...contact me if u think I can offer some other perspectives...check out NCSS website to get a general idea on volunteering n the type of organisations that are available in Spore.

    NCSS-National Council of Social Services.

1 other point that I would like to add in is the importance of how you view people who are in need.

    1) See them as a person 1st.
    2) the needs or disability is 2nd.
Eg. A PERSON with disability NOT A disabled person

I always remind volunteers to see beyond the need/ disability, its the person u r trying to help and not the disability. Having the right mindset will allow a fruitful person to person relationship.

Jerry, please do not calll them "retard", as it is very rude. (i will probably give u a gd lecture if u r my volunteer).

By labeling them "retard" u r labeling them as stupid n incapable of learning. They are NOT "retard" they are kids that will grow up to teen and to adulthood with similar growing pains as us. They are a PERSON like u n me, capable of learning (and teaching us a thing or 2) if given the right environment, time and opportunities which they lack, because of such "retard" labeling like yours. How would you feel if I call u a "retard" (not intended, but more for u to reflect on)?

you may be young but do not be insensitive.

Kids with intellectual disabilities are capable of independence, please assist them by respecting them. Do not put them down by just thinking they are only capable of playing games. Time spend with them should be a fun and good learning experience to help them learn independence. Eg. a outing to macdonalds can be broken up to a few learning tasks like travelling, money usage, social interaction, group interaction, following instructions, attention to details(ordering from menu)...etc.

The Right Attitude is v important.

HGW team, sorry for the outbust, but I'm controlling my emo quite a bit now...(fuming inside)...

SC really highlighted a lot of factors that we all really hv to consider....and i too agree tt the list can go on and on...

my 2 cents worth to add on is:
For all volunteers, do also consider your own emotional and expectations.
Taking e.g. 4 as a reference (mainly cos i hv personal experience in this, albeit a v short duration only), when I first had the opportunity to spend time with the hearing impaired (these are already much older, in their teens), I was more amazed at their courage and optimism towards life. In fact, I learnt a lot from them as well thru the activities we had tog (sea activities and obstacle course). Even though I could only finger spell and my vocab for the hand signs were seriously limited, they are v patient wif me and even taught me.

Later on, I had another opportunity to spend time wif children wif disabilities at the VSA children's camp i mentioned earlier. I was assigned to b the caregiver of an autistic child. Initially I was really apprehensive cos i had no idea wat to expect even aft briefing by the more experienced volunteers. But during the time spent with the child as well as other children of other disabilities in my group, it was really v different. I dunno how to really put into words. From the initial shock to the stretching of patience to the love for the children, that few days were a roller coaster of emotions for me. If I was not prepped beforehand by the experienced volunteers as well as having fellow volunteers sharing the emotional ride with me, its really not easy mentally.

..sry for the long description..but jus wanted to share....

Jerry: I totally and fully agree with SC that they are NOT retard!!

They are jus as normal as us and deserve equal opportunities too. They jus need a little help to fit in and learn the skills necessary. In fact, they can be much more talented than us in many ways if u take ur time to really NOTICE.

HGW, dun mind my outburst too. I really dun like such attitude towards the less fortunate. *grrr*

wow! im actually kind of impressed so many people are willing to help out! i dont think many people can see their pain, especially if they havent been through it themselves or seen these up close. you guys rock! these beneficiaries will be so glad (:

shall we have 2 groups, one to scout for restaurants while another to find the beneficiaries?

korean in general, had this attitude that if the child is adopted then they are not really your child. and that when they're grown up, that they will be looking for their "real" parents. (there a saying in korean that "your vein/bloodline is pulling") therefore, so many children are left in orphanage without a parents. it broke my heart i visited an orphanage my last trip to korea.
