about time the whole world switch to nuclear energy to power everything, and switch to hydrogen for engine fuel source instead. by that, it should help to cut down on prices for everything under the sun, perhaps nt entirely, bt i think should help improve the situation significantly.

Hydrogen?! erm do u know how expensive that is? Energy sources might be good and clean but if its not economical it will not be adapted no matter how 'green' a country is, at the end of the day, money talks...so hydrocarbon is here to stay for quite a while more...

a barrel of crude oil is actually cheaper than a barrel of water.

wakao, then lidat we should save water... drink crude oil... hehehe. no lah, seriously. since when was crude oil cheaper than water? i never knew.

oil used to be 50~70 per barrel even right up to mid 2007...it has gone up to eh I think it closed above 116 on friday...not so sure, but should be around there....

I just did a very rough...repeat rough calculation, of bottle water vs crude oil...1 barrel = 42 gallon = approx 158.34 lt which means a lt of water has to cost less than $0.70 for it to be cheaper than crude oil....eh most places sell water for more than that....yes I know thats the consumer end of prices (which include everything else) but I wanted to impress upon how cheap crude oil is (esp when it was $70 a barrel) n therefore how cheap energy is.....

aleus, i think u made some miscalculation for the comparison liao. if u must compare crude oil, then u should be counting unprocessed water, which is technically abundant (water covers more than 70% of the globe... n gradually increasing due to global warming; icebergs melting in the arctic).

reason being; crude oil cannot be used as fuel unless processed, likewise water cannot be consumed unless treated.

which then means, crude oil is still dearer than water, in lieu of the fact that crude oil is fast depleting, while water is abundant & increasing by the seconds, everyday & possibly for the decades/ centuries/ milleniums to come.

yes thats why I said rough calculation n i also took what u later pointed out into consideration that its crude oil vs consumer end of prices.

Yes too that water covers 70% of the globe. However out of the 70% only approx 3% of it is fresh water. The 3% is also shrinking, fresh water is not abundant, there are many countries that do not have enough access to fresh water and the numbers are increasing. Also, the 70% of water on earth already takes into account the iceberg, melted or not.
Desalination is still very expensive thus not viable. If it is indeed viable, Australia will not have water shortage problems year after year. Actually nor would Singapore. Treating water in most places refer to treating raw fresh water not saline water.

Crude oil depleting....like global warming there are two sides of the story. Going by what predictions/calculations, countries such as USA should not have any oil left.. The increase in oil price is not brought about by the lack of oil, its political and economical reasons that drive oil prices, hardly actual supply that dictates it. Techniques and methods to extract oil have advanced greatly, hence many are drilling deeper or drilling in previous areas that were not possible. The industry is also moving into tar sand/oil sand, bringing whole new players (countries rich in oil sands) into the petroleum market.

oh well im digressing from the thread so will just let this be.

aleus, i still dont get your point on comparison between crude oil vs fresh water. crude= not pure, unfresh water = not pure also leh.......... anyway, let's not drag this discussion too much... lets get back to the thread topic.

rise of food cost. i think its simple economics, supply cant meet demands = highest bidder wins

I'd rather they increase the price than to be sneaky about it by reducing portions. The latter delays your moment of truth until it's too late, and increases dissatisfaction.

When some people complain about the price of rice increasing, and you look at their shopping cart, their $10 bag of rice will last them weeks, and their $10 fish or chicken will last them 2 meals.
Keeping things in perspective, dollars spent on rice go a lot further than dollars spent on other dishes to go with the rice.

yes, true, but i think soon, they will be cutting down on the "other dishes" to get the same amount of rice....either way, there will be a trade off.....oh well, i guess, good excuse to eat less! hahahaha!

sad to say, alota stall owners arent very ethical about their businesses. they sneak & scringe on the portions, not only on the vege & meat, even the rice too. I wouldnt mind less rice, cos i think i need to control my carbo intake, since i havent been working out for awhile. but to charge me the same rates, despite having less rice, few strands of vege & tiny bits of meat for the usual price............ is 1 very hard pill i find hard to swallow.

when i query in exclamation, how come so little yet the usual price, they just shrug their shoulders n say, "bobian, everything price increase".... sigh

i agree that its worse when the portions are reduced and yet being charged at the same price. 'Cos i will get the 'being cheated' feeling when i finally see my food.

i sure hope that there can be 2 prices for rice portion tho....cos i always hv to pay the same amt even if i ask for less rice. :(

there's the new plastic one! it's orange-coloured. but it's not very common yet. last yr my dad gave me pocket money in such notes, then when i used it to pay ppl they'd either go O_O or suspect that i'm giving them a counterfeit.

our $20 plastic note is marked to be similiar design with the bruneian version-that spots the brunei sultan's face, instead of ishak.

oh well, dun matter anyway. with the global economy trailing downwards, n our sg dollar staggering downhill... i wonder if there's gonna be as many new note generated, as compared to previous yrs...

rising food costs has since become the excuse for all food stall owners to serve virtually nothing on their plates.

i ordered economy rice at a neighborhood kopitiam on sunday afternoon; rice (pathetic portion) + cabbage (few strands) + mei cai kou rou (only meicai, kou rou is 2 tiny offcuts) + tofu (few small chunks ... sprinkled with curry sauce.... works out to be $3.40.

i asked the fella... "fren, did u count wrong? there's hardly any meat in my plate". he smiled to say... "mei cai kou rou has meat in it, so counted as meat dish". fed up, i parted the mei cai in my plate n told him to count how many sliced of meat in there.... he just say "price hike, no choice"

had my late dinner at food republic, suntec... after attending the toys convention. i flipped when i was charged $7 for a miserable tiny little plate of beef brisket/tendon noodles. it couldve easily passed off for a $2 worth wanton/charsiew noodles instead.

it was a total rip off, cos i was practically done w it in less than 3min - that should give u a decent idea, how small the portion was. to make matters worse... i was still hungry after i was done w it.

i didnt know it was gonna be $7... there were pics of the food on the menu, bt didnt indicate prices. if i had known it was gonna be $7... i'd have ordered something else from another stall.

i've eaten there b4, n i find some of the food there r still relatively affordable, despite being on the high side. bt little did i expect to get ripped off for the miserable small plate of brisket/tendon noodles. i suppose i'd just stick to conventional stuff where foodcourt is concerned these days.
