Man I really wonder whats wrong with Singapore? Every1 seems to be so aggro and selfish these days...eg. see the tissue "chopping" thread.

Was getting the my tuna sandwich today, and the store owner gave the earlier order to me by mistake(which I had no idea of). The lady who ordered it had walk away , and she stormed into the store when I was abt to pay, asking sternly with her BIG black face where's my sandwich? and looking at me , implying that the one I have is hers.

To cut the story short , i apologise but got no reply from her , she paid and stormed out.and the servers apologise to me. ...Typical singaporeans??? I hope not.

    Hey relax gal....
  1.
i suppose one of the reasons is that singaporeans' lives are getting more and more stressful, which worsens their moods...

mmm..true...but some are quite inconsiderate too...I wonder is it cos of the gov attitude (eg. singapore incorporated) that is causing ppl to be selfish, cos they see it as we have to protect our own interest 1st as its "market forces"

anyway...another example, was in the bus yesterday to get fishball noodles(which din happen. sob sob), back passenger was blasting korean songs from his handphone. It was ok for me , as I like it but it was quite irritating for others. Can't this person put on his earphones?

Check out the happiness index and see where Singapore ranks, and where our friendly neighbouring societies rank. As you'll see, many developed and developing societies rank higher than Singapore.

anyway, back to ugly sgporean ethics in food ctrs.

    1. to date there're still a small elite tier of uneducated who discharge their nostril fluids in most impressive projectile manner.

    2. ppl who dont know how to cover their distorted faces when they sneeze... God knows wat germs they spray into the air... in a bid to display their motto of caring n sharing

    3. once upon a time, ppl were fined big time for stubbing their ciggie butts into food bowls (after their meals)... the irony, nothing ever happens to those who discard their used tissue papers into cutleries when their done wiping.

    4. we still encounter selfish b*st*rds who's be hogging the tables chatting n taking their own bl**dy sweet time, while others r in need of a table for their fast vanishing 1hr lunch/dinner break.

    5. there'd also be idiots who've lost the ability of using their mouths, to request for less/no ice. hence, they'd b performing their own stunt of de-icing their drinks (discarding the ice onto the greasy floors - potential hazard)

    :trompet:

The people who think that they deserve the tables that others are occupying are equally selfish.
It's a public eating place, so why should people who want to sit and occupy the tables be any worse than the ones thinking that they should bug off and let them have their turn?
  5.
there was once i went with my family to a hawker ctr in bedok. while the rest went to buy food i found an empty table n sat down. then a man came up n just sat at my table without even asking if the seats were occupied. i told him twice tt the seats were occupied but he din seem to understand english, so i gave up. later another man came to the table and asked the first man IN ENGLISH if it was occupied. i tried to tell him it's occupied but the first man told him IN ENGLISH "ure free to sit here...if she (referring to me) tells u not to sit u can call the police"

so unreasonable!!!! it's not as if im choping seat with tissue or some other object wad. if i did that he still has the right to occupy the table cos i'd be doing something selfish. but now i'm reserving the table by sitting there in person, so i don't see why i'm in the wrong. HE's the one in the wrong cos i came first and sat at the table first lor.
  6.
yarh there are a lot of people who pretend they dont understand you when they did something they know is wrong. despicable!

contrarian, in food centres, i will appreciate people to not hog a table just for talking, especially when there are no other seats available. you can always move somewhere else to talk while it will be more convenient for me to have a table for eating. i find it very irritating when people have already finished eating and still insist and sitting there, pretending to be oblivious to those poor souls with no seats and carrying their food around. it is not a matter of whether they deserve the seats or not, but whether you put yourself in other people's shoes.

u see, its precisely a public eating place, so ppl should scoot when they're done with their meals, so others can have their seats to consume their lunch/dinner, in the given 1hr span for meal.

not an issue of selfish or selflessness... bt i should think its basic courtesy... instead of hogging n chatting away as if there's no other places to chat to their hearts content

Appreciate - no issues. For what I get, I'm thankful. Find it irritating - tough. I put myself in those shoes. My reaction:
    1. don't eat there
    2. look harder for a place to sit
    3. wait for a place to sit
    4. stand and eat
Yes, I've done all of the above at various times. If I have limited time for my meal, don't have a seat, that's my problem, not anyone else's. I don't expect to place my own selfish need over someone else's, or for someone to indulge my needs unless he wants to.

I can change myself, and don't expect the world or anyone to change for me just because I believe I deserve better, or think that I am any better than anyone who behaves badly. Setting high expectations of myself, and none of others, reduces any potential disappointment.
  9.
again, this points to the increasing individualism of our society! i think it is not a matter of having high expectations of myself, that everyone should give in to me. but more of why cant people look out for one another? poeple uncomfortable, i can do something to help without making myself uncomfortable <- why not?

public makan places as its name suggests, intended for the public. so basically, if they're done with their eating, they should just vacate the table, so others get a chance to sit n have their meal. these days, its not only apparent in hawkers, bt u see students hogging seats at fast food joints (buried in their assignments/projects) as well.

its not as if there arent other places available for them to do what they need to do. cos makan places primarily is intended for makan.

sometimes the cleaners contracted at the hawkers/foodcourts can simply spoil ones appetite. they clear the table as though we owe them a living, so they make some noise & make waves (literally) when they dunk the plates/cutleries into their mobile basins... while the colorful oil coated water splashes high
(count yourself lucky if the water doesnt splash your way)

and sometimes they pretend nothing happened, proceed to wipe the tables with the already greasy rag (forgeting that the water probably dirtied the stools), and they scoot away to the next table.
  10.
the cleaners in some hawker centres are so slack that u don't even see them around doing their job. at seah im hawker centre, my lunch-mates and i spent quite abit of time looking around for cleaners but we saw none. in the end, we had no choice but to clear the extremely messy table ourselves cos there were no other clean tables around.

wakao, then the tourists must be impressed... that our country can afford to hire office attired cleaners at the hawkers to do cleaning. hehehe.... u're not a lone, i too have had my fair share of cleaning after others. cos the cleaners went AWOL.

Any place that opens for business will be classified as a "public" makan place for legal purpose even though they are ALL "privately" owned by a business or an individual.

I don't see how people should vacate a seat just because they are done with their meals. Many people chill in Macs so I can't see any reason you can ask people who finished their burger to leave. It is like going to a restaurant or a pub and tell someone to go f-off because you want to seat there... I don't think it works like that in the real world no matter which country you go to....

I would really be pissed off if some one come to me at say brewerkz and say "ooi yan dao, le kee hong gan, Wa ai le eh wee." translation: hello handsome you go f-off I want your f-ing seat.

I paid the money so I expect to be able to chill as long as I want to and enjoy the company of my drinking/dining mates until I am ready to leave or the place closes. The same will apply in Macdonalds. Or when I am drinking beer with friends in a Kopitiam. So i'll have to agree with contrarian on this issue.

If it happens to be me looking for a seat and having to wait for one in Macs, Kopitiam, or pub so be it I'll wait until i get one or I can go somewhere else. There is no moral high ground in this issue no matter how it is framed.

    2 cents =)
  13.
I guess there are 2 sides to every issue but im with caniggia on this. Even in restaurants, i will still leave after finishing my meal if there is a long queue outside waiting for tables. I know a lot of people don't do that but when i think of myself being pissed off waiting for a seat, i auto will want to let other people have it.

You don't attach a price tag to this kind of thing do you?

PG, there's a big difference between a seat at canteen/ hawkers/ fast food chains (especially during the peak lunch/dinner hrs), compared to restaurants with ambience & a pricier bill that comes with it.

no need to fuss over "moral high grounds"
