i already verified with seniors.... vertical chopsticks in the bowl is offered to deceased/ghosts/spirits of the netherworld. while, processions where u witness it being done is for spirits/guardians for the "basement". those in upper deck & beyond dont need chopsticks in their bowls.

Uselss stuff....the only delicious about shark's fin is the broth it is cooked in... =)

Ok not exactly totally useless : sharks fin has high protein and lots of gelatin that aids in cartilage growth but it also has lots of mercury and lead from the ocean.....=) The chinese Compendium of Materia Medica will tell you that it is good fro waist, supplement vital energy, good for kidneys and liver, and nourish the blood. But cannot be supported with any evidence by today's nutritional studies...

Shark bone soup - ALL belached and cannot be washed before cooking...so you are drinking bleach water. =P

ROFL HC, nt unless u're the greatly sought after monk from nakhon rachasima - longpor-khun. its been touted that his saliva & sputum have rich powers, and he performs heealing/blessings by spitting on his devotees/followers. i once read an article that he casually spits on the ground, and the followers (i'd prefer them as fanatics) all rush to the ground hustling to have a taste of it.

anyways, sharks fins/ birds nests r just delicacies that were once food for the rich & famous during the ancient days. reason, sharks r dangerous n tough to subdue, while birds nest required expeditions into virgin forests/caves, perform death defying feat to harvest - the fins/nests r considered invaluable prize, to favor n get into the good books of the movers n shakers in those days.

along in those ranks r things like; bear paw, tiger's p*nis, tapirs snout, crocodile meat, snake gall bladder... etc

to date, i'm quite sure there've been no forensic/ scientific findings to support their nutritional values, as claimed.

truth be told, the sharks they cut up for the fins are not endangered lah. in fact, the entire shark is being properly utilized, for their cartilages eventually r processed for glucosamin essense, their skin used for leathergoods.

presently, only the great whites, bronze whaler & some docile breeds of sharks r endangered (cos not enough food source to sustain their breeding)

so technically this should clear the air for those who're in doubt whether shark fins soup on the menu is genuinely causing the extinction of sharks.

now, flour & rice produces suffering great world shortage, very soon we'd all be grazing grass... so no worries about going vegan... that day will eventually come.

caniggia, from what I know there's is a major decline in shark population and alot of illegal killing of sharks with wastage (just havesting for fins)

mmm..will try to look for some updated info and link it up here...(i hope that u r right)...anyway...shark fin has minimum nutritional factors mostly taken for maintaining cultural lifestyle, more of a status food.

well i can do without it, i'm just a kampong boy, not atas...hahahaha....hey u and rata to hook up and do a diving trip...i have not dive in years!!!!

major decline in shark population is all thanks to the climate changes, affecting fish migrations. hence there's less feeding ground for the endangered species in the shark family tree. which is also causing the increase in shark attacks off the pacific coasts in down under australia.

its a status food, agreed... which also means its not something we could easily afford to consume as a daily staple. not forgetting, the fins are actually sundried for preservations... so if there's over killing/harvesting of sharks fins, then it only serves to help make the dish alot more affordable (supply exceed demand)

to date, i've been told that ppl have found "alternatives" to replace sharks fins soup on menus. either that, some have found cheaper alternatives in harvesting & preparing fish fins to be cooked & consumed the same was as sharks fins soup.

whatever the case may be, i think activists have somehow confused the facts & over inflated the cause n effects of shark killings. linking great white endangered numbers due to the dish on the menu. just imagine how many chefs it'd take to manouvre & prepare 1 blade of great white's fin...??

diving? its been a long long time since i last breathed thru the ockie & slipped on my fins. not to mention, i'd look like a delicious meal (walrus) for the sharks - given my current physic.

    wahahahaha...'walrus'!!!

    anyway check this out...FactSheet

errr..not only sharks, i think the world fish population is declining... its all boils down to GREED...

I'm just doing my small part to be as green as I can.

      CommentAuthorcaniggia (CommentTimeApr 14th 2008)

i dunno if it really is an issue of greed, cos from the looks of how much human population has grown over the decades, its too obvious that whatever we take from nature is way too fast for its reproduction rates to meet the demands.

american fishery departments also sensed the huge decline of tuna fishes in the seas, which then inspired them to create open sea tuna ranches, so they can breed & supply tunas at faster rates, as compared to thrawling for tunas.

oysters, shrimps, seabass & some other seafood are also being cultivated today, and slowly moving into agricultural pace. so, perhaps there will come a day where the world will suddenly switch back to agriculture & horticulture. as do many mainland chinese graduates have done.

Posted By: hygiene 1. they say banana & papaya consumption facilitates movements in the intestines...truecoz of their water content, aid smoother transition along the colon
i think there's some properties in banana & papaya that triggers intestine activities far better than other fruits

Posted By: hygiene 2. they say an apple a day keeps the doctor away...truefruits r gd for health coz they r rich in vitamins n minerals n have high water content to hydrate the body cells
if that's the case, then they should rephrase the myth to "a guava a day keeps the doctor away" - cos guava apparently ranks highest for vit-C content

Posted By: hygiene 3. they say mangosteen neutralizes the heatiness, especially after durian...true mangosteen is cooling,
    wow, i never knew that. that's a good 1

ic, so i guess perhaps next time should just have durian, and standby "chinese perrier" (bai hua she cao shui) on the side

frankly, i still cant quite figure out the concept of 'air' or 'wind' from certain species of vege. arent they all the same? as in their just good sources of fibres that aid intestine reactions? the old folks claim that certain vege causes 'air' or 'wind', n results in upsetting the anatomy.

especially most stringent when it comes to pregnant ladies & post natal moms.
