Clubs and pubs come and go and only the few established ones still remain standing today amidst the ever-changing trends.

Zouk/Velvet Underground, by far, still the grand old dame (at least to me la, since Mohd Sultan stretch is no longer the hot spot - can imagine those old outlets being spawn into another). Any more established ones still around?

Newer ones nowadays tend to be operated in clusters, such as The Cannery and St James. Thumper (heard more for models, yuppies, true? :P). Luna (chinese themed club), Gotham Penthouse (hunks performance..woo..:P) etc etc.

Anyone knows where is good nowadays? Meaning, music is good, gd promo, etc. :)

to me, clubbing scene will very unlikely die out, considering the big players in the background piping in funds to keep things pumping smooth. the likes of zouk, st.james, MOS... n lots more.
1 thing that puzzles me; there seem to be several thai themed joints sprouting around, here there n everywhere??? i guess, the more the merrier... hehehe

The first criteria would be a place that lets you in because you meet the age limit. Secondly, it plays the music that you like to hear.

BA: dun worrie abt age limit. i know gers who have been clubbing since they are 15. of cos, a good dress sense helps!

Ladies nite are on either Wednesdays or Thursdays. No further discounts necessary 'cos ladies do not need to pay cover charge and are entitled to free drinks (no of drinks varies b/w outlets). Any additional drinks ordered or other drinks that do not fall within the boundary of the free drink types will be charged as per normal. Discounts are usu tied to speciality cards or mostly club membership.

Cheap and good? erm....alcohol sold in clubs are never meant to be cheap esp after happy hours. Want cheap alcohol, then is best bought from other sources and drink in the comfort of own home.
Of cos, there are also gd promos ard tt ppl will go for in order to save.
E.G. my own recent experience at St James - Dragonfly where my colleague made us go during the happy hour so that we can avoid the cover charge (even tho its only $10 per pax) and pay less for alcohol.
Another experience at St James (Powerhouse and Bellini Room) on Ladies nite is where I don't need to pay a single cent as cover charge is waived and ladies are entitled to 5 free drinks each per outlet.

Zouk by far still a favourite I realise, even among my frens and juniors, despite all the new club spots sprouting everywhere. :)

Anyone knows if places like Thumper, Luna, Gotham Penthouse, etc are any good? Tho' I heard that Thumper are no longer as hot ever since they revamped.

Age limit is still best adhered to, never really know when is required to have your IC checked. Unless really want to 'trick' lo. :) And yes, the dressing plays a part. :)

well, as for me, my happening days r long gone... started out from fire disco - jamming n hoping to kriss kross, in my skater jeans, never really bothered about canto in marina south, cos outa the way... n then upgraded to sparks. bt the violence n 'young n dangerous' wannabes made the visits very upsetting.

finally moved on to zouk, n my attendance was virtually 100% every single wednesday. to the point i even got myself a job waitering in velvet. (mgt actually tried to psycho me to upgrade to b bouncer instead). quit working there eventually due to excessive inhaling of ciggie smoke - despite being a pathological smoker myself.

i can safely say that zouk was probably the place that saw thru very much of my entire clubbing days. to date, no regrets of re-visiting zouk.

have heard much about st james, thumper n many other joints. nonetheless, have to tame myself liao... age catching on, too much clubbing n SYT watching, nt too good for my weak heart. hehehehe

I am a Mambo fan so ZOUK was definitely the place.... until I realise the crowd are getting too kiddish for me. Have since moved on to DlbO if I am looking for mambo music as they have their retro nights on a Saturday. Besides being famous for their cheap drinks, you get a good mixed of young and old since it takes place on a weekend.

St James is not too bad as well and I am looking forward to see what they will do to Bar None @ Marriott. :)

This is really a bunch of old timers reminiscing the past glory days of their youth. Can youth of today really identify with the Mambo music played at Zouk?

yup, agree with u on that note. we grew up listening to the numbers spun at mambo, so the reminiscing is somewhat enjoyable. while the lip synch & synchronized dancing can be quite a spectacle too.

i guess class 95 listeners would probably agree hands down. bt i still ponder if those born in the 80s can identify? afterall, they probably grew up listening to backstreet boys, nsync... etc. i wonder if they know pet shop boys, depeche mode n boy george....??

I think shldn underestimate the youths of today. Initially I tot they prob may not be able to relate to mambo at Zouk but then when I got to know a young gal of 21 or 22 recently, she actually told me that Zouk is her fav place. Of cos, I did not find out if her fav day of the week is Mambo night. But I guess it says much. 'Cos we were trying to dance at Powerhouse but the music sucks and she agreed too.

Yep, I grew up listening to backstreet boys, Nsync...but also listen to oldies (read: Barry Manilow, Frank Sinatra, Beatles, etc - courtesy of my parents and uncles and aunties). Basically I grew up listening to a wide genre of songs, be it for english or mandarin or even hokkien songs. Just that sometimes, I dun exactly rem the song title or singer. Nowadays, I go for alternative world music at times and jazz as well. :)

Generally, I m pretty open to fast numbers other than mambo but no metallic or techno pls. I simply dun understand hw can anyone dance to techno. OMG.

Zouk Wed night brings back memories. However the songs are not that retro anymore. DJs try to slip in other sort of music....but by far, I still prefer Zouk too :)

MOS was a big big disappointment.

BTW one for the ladies: why would any of u patronise St James after the news in the papers?

      CommentAuthorcloudgal (CommentTimeJun 4th 2008)

I don't see any reason to boycott.
Also, I noticed a number of mature ladies patronizing the various food establishments and clubs there. :)

I don't condone discrimination. But it still doesnt mean I need to boycott it.
