PEONY JADE | The Keppel Club outlet has a big list of new Chinese New Year dishes (as they do every year), but our favourite is their take on the traditional must-have for Chinese New Year feasts: an 'Abounding Riches' golden suckling pig stuffed with glutinous rice, slow-roasted over charcoal fire. This is served per piece ($8.88 each) or as a whole 5kg pig ($238.88 serves 12). Orders need to be placed at least a day in advance. Available from 18 January to 14 February. BLUE LOTUS | Though this yu sheng (part of set menus, which are $88 to $288 per person) has to be had on premises, this contemporary Chinese eating house’s Chinese New Year takeaways include a traditional lotus lo mai gai (steamed glutinous rice with Chinese sausage, $38+), but the pièce de résistance is a glazed and roasted, whole suckling piglet ($188+). Order these for your at-home reunion dinners, but be sure to place your orders three days in advance. Available till 14 February.
GRAND PARK CITY HALL | For an auspicious addition to Chinese New Year dinners, order in the Harvest pen cai with pig trotters ($298, serves six; $488 serves ten). This first-time offering from Grand Park City Hall contains the nourishing goodness of perfectly braised pig trotters and 17 other ingredients that include abalone, sea cucumber, whole conpoy and ginko nuts. Orders need to be placed a day in advance. Available till 14 February.
RESTAURANT HOME | Have a fuss-free dinner at home, by Home. Their Chinese New Year set meal serves ten and is priced at $678. The set includes an array of auspicious dishes, yu sheng with Norwegian salmon, barbecued goose with lychee wood, fragrant brown rice with preserved meat and dried scallop wrapped in lotus leaf, and a pen cai of braised treasures like scallop, prawn, dried oyster and braised chicken. Orders need to be placed three days in advance. Festive orders need to be collected by 3pm on 30 January.
LI BAI CANTONESE RESTAURANT | New this year from this Cantonese restaurant is the stewed eight treasures chicken with five-head abalone ($298, serves up to eight). A stewed dish of premium ingredients like the abalone and a roasted chicken that's stuffed with lotus seed, mushrooms, sea cucumber, salted egg, barley, chicken, pork and chestnut. Available till 14 February.
HAI TIEN LO | Plan a cosy family reunion at home with fuss‐free Lunar New Year takeaways from Pan Pacific's Chinese restaurant. The traditional treasure set comes with a yu sheng platter comprising of vegetarian sea grapes, black moss, Norwegian salmon, abalone and tuna; a treasure pot with whole abalone, dried oysters, sea cucumber, pork knuckles and mushrooms; and a traditional stewed chicken with eight treasures and lotus seeds. The set comes with complimentary nian gao (Chinese New Year cake made from glutinous rice). The $428 set serves six, and the $668 set serves 12.
MAN FU YUAN | For a truly decadent reunion dinner at home, order in chef Kwan’s signature double-boiled Fu Zhou Buddha Jumps over The Wall, which includes delicacies like whole abalone, sea cucumber, fish maw, dried scallops, goose web and panax ginseng that are cooked on low heat for 48 hours to create a thick, luxurious and nutritious broth. The dish serves five and comes with wok-fried glutinous rice and yu sheng ($688). Also worth a try is the deluxe Treasure Pot – this pen cai is full of baby abalone, sea cucumber, fish maw, goose web, scallops, preserved meat sausages and Boston lobster ($398, serves five; $608, serves eight). PUTIEN | Delight in Heng Hwa cuisine this Chinese New Year with Putien's hassle-free takeaway menus. Place your orders for their set meals (From $88 for two persons) that feature signature dishes like the deep-fried pig’s trotter with salt and pepper, the longevity noodles and a prosperity yu sheng. Or opt for the pen cai - a symbol of prosperity - that is packed with quality ingredients such as whole abalone, sea cucumber, pork tendon, roast pork, Japanese flower mushroom, dried scallops and black moss ($288, serves six; $468 serves ten). Each order of pen cai comes with a complimentary box of Putien's hand-made mee sua. Orders need to be place three days in advance. Available till 14 February.
TANDOOR | Spice up your reunion dinner at home with Tandoor’s yu sheng flavoured with Indian spices. The traditional salad of salmon ($48++ serves four, $68++ serves eight) and abalone ($58++ serves four, $78++ serves eight) and julienned vegetables are dressed with cumin, nutmeg, coriander and ginger and then sweetened with mango juice. Available from 25 January to 14 February.
THE SEAFOOD INTERNATIONAL MARKET & RESTAURANT | This seafood specialty restaurant’s star offering is the Fortune Treasure Pot pen cai in prosperity basket - packed with Australian abalone, black moss, roasted duck, fish maw, sea cucumber, conpoy, dried oyster, sakura chicken and more. It is stewed in a claypot of superior stock. Each order of pen cai comes with a complimentary raw salmon yu sheng, 'sea treasures' fried rice wrapped with lotus leaf, and traditional nian gao. Regular (serves 4 to 5 persons) is $228 and large (serves 8 to 10 persons) is $398. Available till 14 February.
CRITIC’S PICK | THYE MOH CHAN | We are big fans of this traditional Teochew bakery, and their pineapple pastries do not disappoint. The crust is the right amount of buttery and crumbly and they come in three types of fillings including walnut and longan. Our favourite is still the original (box of eight for $22.80).
FOUR SEASONS HOTEL | At the Four Seasons Hotel, the must-buy takeaways are the cleverly packed hampers filled with Chinese New Year goodies. Try the fortune hamper of ten items ($328+) or the deluxe hamper with 13 items ($568+). Expect goodies like superior abalone, bird’s nest with rock sugar, homemade XO chilli sauce with Japanese scallop among others. Orders need to be placed three days in advance. Available till 14 February.
GOODWOOD PARK HOTEL | Pastry chef Joe Tan creates a completely edible Fortune of Gold ($80 for 1kg), a sweet made with passionfruit and apricot pound cake, covered in icing and topped with eight gold ingots (handcrafted with white chocolate and icicng) and eight gold coins. Also available is the Lucky Orange Delight ($80, 1kg), an orange pound caked shaped like a giant Mandarin orange (coated with white chocolate and icing), the cake opens up to reveal eight petite oranged made of dark chocolate. DA PAOLO GASTRONOMIA | Fans of Da Paolo’s cronuts, we mean crodos, make a beeline for the Chinese New Year-themed Gold Coin crodo ($5.80 per piece) that's filled with custard and topped with gold dust. If that does not make you feel prosperous enough, spring for the Prosperity New Year hamper ($88) that is jam-packed with goodies like a bottle of Dolcetto D’Alba red wine, Italian jams and spreads, homemade pastries like pineapple and parmesan tarts, and – because they can – horse-shaped cookies on a stick.
BREADTALK | Their year-of-the-horse offerings are as aptly themed as they get. New this year is the Horseperity ($2.30 per piece), an adorable horse-head shaped sweet bun filled with strips of bak kwa, cheddar cheese and mayonnaise. There is also the horse shoe-shaped Lucky Charm ($2) – a buttery Danish with raisins and orangee peel and topped with sliced almonds. Available till 14 February.
DIN TAI FUNG | For a Taiwanese twist on the traditional, opt for Din Tai Fung’s Taiwan Songshan pineapple cakes (three for $7.50, ten for $23.80). Air-flown from Taiwan for the festive season, these crumbly-dough-ed baked goodies are made with the low-acidic Songshan pineapples. These are also preservative and trans-fat free. RUE DU SUCRE | This online-only gourmet truffle store began with dreams of making the pineapple tart – the ultimate Southeast Asian delicacy, especially for Chinese New Year – a high-end offering. The store makes a really good traditional flavour pineapple tart (luscious filling, with a we-want-more closed crust), as well as other variations like the green tea (pictured), cinnamon, and chocolate tarts (all $18.80 for two sealed packs of ten each – so they'll keep fresher longer). CARLTON HOTEL | A great gift for Chinese New Year are Carlton Hotel's premium pineapple tarts. Freshly made with fine ingredients, the tarts are filled with generous servings of homemade pineapple paste wrapped in a thin, crumbly crust (eight for $25.80). Also available are ma tai gou (water chestnut cake), Cocoa Pops cookies and pecan cinnamon cookies. Available till 30 January.
BAKERZIN | Usher in the new year with dependable sweet treats from Bakerzin. New this year are the yuzu yuan bao pineapple tarts – bite-sized nuggets designed like a yuan bao (ingots) with a pineapple filling that has been infused with yuzu zest (box of 20 for $26.80). There is also a new range of cookies in flavours like pistachio and cranberry chocolate chip, yuzu, sesame, cashew and... wait for it, double chocolate chip (box of 30 for $25.80). YAN TING | It's Chinese New Year goodies galore at the St Regis with festive hampers of all combinations. Opt for the exclusive hamper ($188) and you get a package filled with Mandarin oranges, deep-fried cashew nuts, sesame seed balls, candied almonds, pineapple tarts, oven-baked walnuts and a jar of their special XO sauce. Spring for the bespoke hamper ($288) and you get all that with the addition of wind-dried Chinese sausages and dried scallops.
SWEETSPOT | Available at SweetSpot this year is pastry chef Ryan Witcher’s festive take on the cheesecake ($9), made with mango, lime breton and fresh pomelo. There is also the Mandarin ($2.70), a macaron filled with candied mandarin ganache.
