SHANGRI-LA HOTEL | Shangri-La’s pastry chef Herve Potus creates an array of buche de noels (French yule log cakes) for the festive season. There are flavours such as caramel, earl grey with blackberry, strawberry with lime, carrot cake, and yuzu creme brulee with mascarpone, hazelnut nougatine and chestnut cream (each $55, serves six to eight). What appeals to us the most is the Vintage 72 Per Cent (digestive cookie fondant base packed with raisins and roasted almond flakes and a 72-per-cent chocolate mousse, $50, serves six to eight). DA PAOLO GASTRONOMIA | Italian gourmet deli and fine food purveyor Da Paolo Gastronomia sells its Yule Log in a set of three. For $89, you get one each of the ground almond cake with crispy chocolate hazelnut feuilletine centre, chocolate cake with caramel cream studded with crunchy Valrhona chocolate pearl, and Valrhona chocolate cake with brandied dark chocolate ganache. The three cakes together can serve up to 15. Available until 31 December 2013.
