  1. Impeccable service and value for $$$ at this hidden gem !

Always wanted to try out this place after reading a couple of reviews here....but time wasn't on my side today, as I was just rushing back from an earlier errant ! Only have 30 mins before closing time and 15 mins before last order...so called their number and spoke to a very courteous and helpful gentleman by the name Eric. Asked him quickly what is good for " ta pau " and he recommended the following :

    1) Crab meat and salmon pasta with red pesto sauce.

    2) Beef strogganof with rice

I was at Bukit Timah and told Eric I will rush down before their closing time. After ending the call, I called again to tell Eric to get them to prepare the food just before their last call for last order. Eric said he'd highlighted to his chef about this and this is a plus point for someone who cares for your takeaway order...well done Eric : )

When I reached there after driving like Michael Schumacher....the place was still packed on a weekday ! Mind you...this is not your typical crowd from Pasir Panjang ! The diners are typical CBD Shenton Way folks ! So it seems this place is quite popular despite being slightly out of the way.

My order was already waiting for me....just less than 2 mins upon my arrival...as promised by Eric...and piping hot....however, being the "kiasu" fella...I asked Eric whether I can have some extra red pesto sauce just in case it's too dry when I'm home.He gladly got his chef to prepare some for me with a smiling face all the way : )

FYI I'm never fond of " ta pau " food as the taste will be alittle "off" as compared when served on the spot. So reached home again like piloting an F1 car.....ha...lucky me the food still piping hot...first tried the pasta....hmm...not bad...like many comments from other reviewers...lot's of fresh crab meat....and a generous portion of salmon as well !

Next...tried the beed stroganoff....tasted alittle like chinese dish...it's not bad really....but just reminded me of beef on hotplate...as there's some chinese "wok" taste...and not forgetting the generous amount of mushrooms...and the delicious rice provided....This is really one of the better...or shall I say best western food along Pasir Panjang....yup...even beating some CBD eateries !

I have this feeling the place will be packed on weekends due to their great service and tasty dishes...not forgetting...affordable and good value for money. And if u ever need to "ta pau" like me, fear not...the food still taste as good as you are eating there. It's really worth your trip there.

Ha ha...bet you did not follow the recent story about MS taking over the wheel of a taxi in Germany when he collected his new dog ? MS was kind of bored as the driver of a taxi was going at a "slow" pace...so he gave the driver 100 Euros and said to him...you sit back and relax, and I'll drive ! Wah " kio tio ".....the driver now kena chauffered by MS....but when they reached their destination...the driver almost fainted ! MS was driving at such high speed and professionalism...macham like driving for Ferrari...that driver must be shocked, proud....and well rewarded...as MS the star ex F1 driver piloted his taxi.....yup after MS retirement ! Ya..go check out Bistro103....decent good food and great folks running the place.

Hey, this is kindof weird, funny & infuriating. I'd signed up ( with my husband's encouragement), meaning to post a good review for this restaurant given that my family & I have became recent regulars. We like this cosy place not only for their good quality food & reasonable prices but also their friendly service...only to discover your mean & unfair comments! Why??? Cos we happened to be the very family occupying the only table that very night you rushed in howling embarassingly!!! Talk about coincidence!

I appeal to all readers here to discredit this young lady's (Ginger) wilful accussations. We witnessed how professionally the lady boss had handled the situation. She'd offered Ginger a glass of water & spoke to her very nicely while asking her to calm down even though this young lady reaked of alcohol, was howling out loud & propped her legs up on other seats. The boss also helped gave her friend road directions via Ginger's handphone in order to get her driven home safely.

Things only got out of control when Ginger threw her credit card at the boss & telling her to bring her whatever brownies' available, meanwhile shouting wrongful accusations & vulgarities with the 'F" words about the boss into the phone to her friend. From our seats, my husband told her to watch her words but was ignored. The boss then calmly told her to leave the premise and wait for her ride home outside. The last I remembered, she got picked up by a white car after a long time wobbling and sitting by the road outside.

This is my side of the story of what actually happened that night. Yes, we consumers deserve good service but don't expect it when people like Ginger pushed it over the limits.

          Jul 2, 2008
Had a few overseas ex-uni mates in town and on reccomendation from my wife, I decided to reserve and bring them here for dinner before they leave S'pore.

5 of us were seated promptly upon arrival by a very polite young chap, whom I understood at the end was one of the partners. My wife'd mentioned that the chef's quite a young & good looking chap and hehee I just HAD to peep into the kitchen 'on my way' to the washroom. Hhmm...if only I'm a couple of years younger..just kidding!

We were impressed right from the start...the nice chap asked if we preferred ice or warm water! Hey, you don't even get this sort of service at hotels most times! (one of us is currently a chef from a particular branded hotel in Sydney and he guiltily agreed too! haha)

The place looks very simple and clean. The warm colors of walls, shelves and furniture plus the flowery curtains made us all feel very at home and relaxed. It reminded me of those small Italian family cafes in Australia.

Menu is not extensive but appropriate for a small outfit. Prices reasonable. We ordered the much raved about Escargots w/White Wine, Italian Brushetta, House Salad, Pork Ribs, Saucy Beef, Salmon & Crabmeat Cream Sauce, Bacon & Ham Carbonara, Cajun Chicken w/Mushroom Ragout.

The salad's fresh, salsa on Brushetta was refreshing, Escargots left us drooling for more, the meats were tender and pastas were really well done. In short...wow!! I must agree with my wife that we do have some amazing local talents and we should be proud of them!! We felt that all above dishes were very well done and it was evident that the Chef'd put in a great deal of effort. While presentation wasn't top notch but hey, it would've gone against the whole idea of homely dining! Since when o'mama did fine presentations?? Haha..

For wines, we chose a bottle of Barrister Blk Cab Sauv from a South Australian Boutique winery. Full bodied with silky tannins and most of all not expensive! We paid only $50plus for it which was great value at a restaurant! BYO is allowed at $5 but they have a reasonable selection.

Didn't have room for desserts as the portions were generous but our chef needed a sweet and chose the brownie which he clearly enjoyed it. I tasted the vanilla ice cream and was glad it wasn't cheap stuff. Settled my bursting stomach with a cuppa instead.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our relaxed night there with great food, a quality bottle of wine and friendly attentive service. I'm converted and will be back for more!

            Oct 26, 2009
We love the Kurobuta Pork Neck Steak! The meat was so tender and flavoursome! It was a boneless, well muscled and very flavorful cut of meat! I can’t get enough of the salad that comes with it. Love rocket leaves with light vinegar dressing!

We also ordered the Lamb Shoulder Racks. Nice to know that the mint sauce was specially made by the kitchen! No wonder it tasted quite unique.

Lychee sorbet was on the house. We love restaurants that are generous! :)

Took a bus there. May drop by again because of the hearty servings.

            • A hidden gem along Pasir Panjang Road

              Oct 12, 2009
I couldn't resist but to contribute a review just after my dinner at Bistro One Zero Three last night. We were there just about 7ish and the cozy little place was relatively quiet and empty. Which was good as we had a noisy lunch at Jerry's the day before and wanted some quality couple time enjoying quality food.

Location wise, it is indeed inaccessible if you're not driving but if you're driving, it's pretty easy to locate if you know where Manhill Chinese restaurant is. Parking wasn't a problem because there was a public car park just before the restaurant.

Service wise was pretty fine and we have no issues with it, probably because we were the only diners at that time.

              Food -

              Italian Bruschetta
Thumbs up! After reading through the reviews, we were up to try this appetizer. For me, the taste is pretty refreshing due to its tangy after-taste.

              Escargots with White Wine Sauce
Hmm... Another unique dish, what I like about this dish is that, the escargots were generously huge; you know how some places serve really tiny escargots? But, nopes, this place does not compromise on quality and quantity. Even the sauce was of a generous serving, served with toast.

              Oatmeal Dory Fillet
Dory Fillet was served with a generous serving of potato wedges and coleslaw. The deep-fried dory fillet was perfect with its even coat of oatmeal. Of course, for a female diner like myself, I couldn't finish the fillet and had to share with my date.

              Salmon and Crabmeat Paste (Tomato)
The serving was so huge that I was joking with my date that, it is something I can only find at home. How generous our moms would be with us when it comes to good food. The sauce was evenly mix with the pasta, each mouth just taste as good as the first.

Because we were too full from these four dishes, we couldn't try the dessert.. Such pity!

              • Nice Quiet Bistro

                Oct 1, 2009
We visited on a Thur evening, 730pm.
Whilst the outside is a busy road with a huge flyover, the inside is extremely simple, almost plain, with soft music playing.
Nice jazzy range, which suits the ambience, all tables were couples only, speaking in low tones.

Service is top-notch and earnest. Attentive and knowledgeable.

Food service is well-timed with dishes nicely plated.

The Crumbled Feta cheese with Sun-dried tomatoes was really nice.
Always refreshing to have good salad leaves.

Mushroom soup was a little too "floury" for my liking, without the fresh mushroom flavour.

We had the ribs and osso bucco, both were really well-done.
Went well with the House Red wine (Chilean).
Corkage is only $5++, very very reasonable.

Brownie was nice and cakey with a smooth vanilla ice cream.
Rum & Raisin ice cream was nice too!

If you are looking for a nice hearty meal (food portions are generous!) with heart-felt service and a quiet environment, Bistro 103 is the place to be.

I will definitely return with more friends!

                • Well worth a try.

                  Aug 17, 2009
This resturant is right beside manhill in pasir panjang. If you do not own a car it may be quite inaccessible.

Overall the ambiance is ok. The place is quiet. The design is simple.

                  Food:

Pork Neck - I would say firstly the portion is quite generous, and the quality is quite good. The meat is slightly season with I think pepper and serve with canberry sauce which goes perfectly with the meat. The meat taste good on its on, it was tender, juicy and favourful. At 26+ it is quite a steal. The potatoes and salard however are plain normal

seafood bul - I cant spell but it is $24 on the menu. It come with tomato base soup with squid, salmon musels and macrononi and serve with bread. The tomato soup is pleasant, not too sour, hint of tomato and sweetness and not overwhelming tangy. The ingre is generous. The only failure is the salmon, maybe is because reared salmon is use there seem to be a taste (mud taste).

Duck leg conflit - This is delicious, but hey only one leg for $24 sound too expensive for me. Make it 2.

Lamb rack - decent dish. well excecuteed but nothing special. At $28 it is one of the most expensive on the menu. The quality is good but still I find it slightly expensive.

Service is a slight let down. The waiter only ask for refill our water just b4 we are about to pay the bill.

Also they dont serve bread or tibits while we wait, some toast or crakers to munch on while we wait for food would be nice. since not everone would order appitzer or soup. On the plus side the water they serve is good, no chorine taste.

Really beside being quite inacessible there is no stopping this resturant from becoming a hit.

I would be back for the fame crab meat and salmon pasta

                  • Nice place to dine...

                    Aug 10, 2009
Went there to dine last saturday with my bf. It was not too difficult to find thou I didn't know that area well. Its a simple shop house front, and I made reservations although there weren't many people there when we arrived.

                    Ordered these few dishes...

Soup of the day - Vegetable Soup
It was a pleasant and simple dish. Lots of ingredients in it and the taste was just nice, not too sour.

Starters - Italian Bruschetta & Escargot in White Wine
Ordered the Escargot as recommended by most reviewers. Must say I preferred it served with the shell, however it was nicely done. The white sauce didn't taste much of wine thou, but was thick and cheesy style.
Decided to try their Bruschetta. I've tried many places and their bruschetta mostly sucked. But theirs was well done. The bread was just nice, slight crunch. The salsa was not overly sour or wet. The tomatoes and onions were fresh and crunchy. Won't mind going back there just to eat it.

Mains - Escargot with Mushroom in Tomato Cream Pesto (can't recall the dish my bf ordered, but some beef neck)
The pasta dish was nice to eat. The cream was think and the ingredients of mushroom and escargot was plentiful. Serving was a little big for me to finish.
My bf had some beef neck dish. Can't recall the full name. The meat was tender and the accompanying sauce was sweet yet sour, something like cranberry sauce.

Dessert - Warm Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream
I enjoyed the brownie very much, it was more then warm but not burning hot. The vanilla ice cream was extremely refreshing. Didn't quite taste like a full vanilla ice cream, like something else was added to it, but just couldn't identify what it was.

Overall, it was a nice place to dine with love ones. Quite place with cosy setting. They have quite a range of wine served as well. Didn't manage to take any photos thou, forgot...

                    • Overall Good...

                      Aug 10, 2009
Last Saturday, I wanted to look for a hidden find resturant thus i did a search in Hungrygowhere.com and i found this Bistro One Zero Three top on this list.

I must say this place is really not easy to find but it was not that hard either. Situated along the pasir panjang road, the address did not give too much of a clue where it was situated on my GPS so i tried my luck driving down the long Pasir Panjang Road and tata my gf manage spot it. It was actually situated near the pasir panjang hawker.

The ambience of the place feels like home... haha... cosy and warm... nicely decor and spacious all around...

The service of the staff was friendly and helpful... nothing to complain there...

The food was good, nothing much to complain, i guess it was all around good but must admit, nothing really particularly stand out for me... But i guess the overall experience was great thus the good rating...

                      • A disappointing dessert to end an otherwise satisfactory dinner

                        Aug 4, 2009
Bistro 103 is a very cosy restaurant, greeted by friendly staffs.

                        Starters:
                        1) Italian Bruschetta
The bruschetta here are more sour due to the salsa sauce and refreshing because of the onions and herbs added. The tomatoes are sweet even though they still paled in comparison to the big fat juicy tomatoes we had in italy. Overall, it was a fusion of sweet, sour and garlic taste. Very appetising indeed!

                        2) Escargots in white wine sauce
Omg! This was incredible! The sauce complemented very well with the foccacia bread. The infusion of white wine and cheese after dipping the bread into the sauce simply exploded an array of flavors into our mouths. The white wine wasn't too strong to intoxicate our tastebuds and the addition of cheese (which we guess is mozzarella) added a tinge of saltiness to the sauce.
First bite of the escargot shocked us! The chewiness of the escargot is more like a mushroom than the usual chewy escargots. It was so fat and juicy! We adore it so much that we almost wanted to order a second one!

                        Main:
                        3) Salmon and crab meat pasta
We tried the tomato cream sauce as the highly raved red pesto sauce was removed from the menu 2 wks ago. The spaghetti and the sauce left a lingering sweetness on our tongues! The spaghetti was very well done, just of the right firmness. Not too hard and not too soft. In fact, it was even a little springy! Seriously, just the spaghetti and tomato cream sauce alone deserves full marks.

                        Are we missing out something??
Yes..the salmon. Erm, it tasted just like any normal salmon to us. Although there it was marinated with some herbs, but we could not make out any of the herby taste and it was rather bland. It just tasted like ‘panfried salmon’ nothing much to comment about. However we do have a little complaint about the crabmeat. There was too little crabmeat, which we think counted to about less than 5?! Anyway, the pasta and the sauce was the highlight of the dish. Not the crabmeat or the salmon. Next time we will just order the pasta & sauce alone!

It was a roller coaster ride going uphill so far, with the 2nd dish overwhelming the 1st and the 3rd made us forget the 2nd. We were literally brought to heaven after happily lapping the entire spaghetti with tomato cream sauce off our plate. Here comes our major displeasure of the night. Desserts.

                        4) Warm brownie with french vanilla cream ice cream
It closely resembled Cafe Oliv's warm chocolate brownie and it was actually this dessert which enticed us to Bistro 103. Read many reviews that their brownie was fantastic and so hot that it could even burn your tongue. Dying to try out better ones after Cafe Oliv, we dared ourselves and ordered 2 brownies which we deeply regretted.
When the brownie was served, it was not warm at all. So, we requested for it to be warmer. The waitress reheated it and brought back the same brownie which we ate! BIG NO NO! Although the service they provided earlier was excellent, one wrong move for serving us the same brownie which we had eaten earlier brought the entire service level down! (Cafe Oliv would have changed the entire brownie for a new one ever since we made a complaint to them.) The French vanilla ice-cream contained no vanilla flavour at all! It just tasted like ice + cream. It was a sticky ice-cream which we find tasteless. The brownie, being not warm enough eventually brought the otherwise satisfactory dinner downhill immediately. The guy who served us earlier came to us and explained that because too many customers complained that their brownie was too hot, that was why they dare not make the brownie too hot. BUT we want it hot! Guess Cafe Oliv served the best brownie afterall. We were really disappointed and dismayed because we feel that desserts are supposed to uplift one's spirits but it totally ruined our entire dinner. Yes, we're desserts ppl and really cannot tolerate when they fail to meet our expectations. Not wanting to waste the $12, we rushed through desserts and just want to get out of Bistro 103 asap. Headed elsewhere for a more deserving dessert which ended our dinner perfectly.

LOL...I for one am guilty of always telling them not to heat up my brownie too much! Cos for the quality of chocolate they use, high heat does pure injustice to it! Overheating burns the high cocoa butter choc, causes fat breakdown & bitterness. Brownies are meant to be eaten just slightly warmed & definitely not steaming hot. Unless they've changed their usual make of ice cream, I remember them serving a very tasty one made with real cream & real vanilla beans though.

I am assuming the standard practice across all food establishments when a complaint/request is made is to ascertain what manner of disagreement have the customer with the food.

If it is a complaint about quality, hygiene, or cleanliness, it would be replaced.
If if is a complaint about temperature, presentation... I expect that it is fair for the same food item to be re-worked on and re-served.

EG: If you have found a hair in your brownie I would expect that there be an immediate replacement. If it is to do with temperature I suppose it is common for them to reheat the same brownie and serve it back to you. I would have expected the same brownie to be served to me too :)

Visited the place yesterday for dinner with the bf. I decided to give this place a try after reading about the great reviews submitted. The exterior looked a little dusty (probably due to it being located just next to a busy road) and I initially didn't expect much. We stepped in at about 7pm on a sunday evening and there was only one other couple dining in there. Looking at the crowd or lack of it, I was initially a little worried. It was also really really quiet in there and even though the bf and i were speaking really really softly, we can still hear each other loud and clear =x kinda scary.. the only other couple there didn't seem to be talking at all..

The bf and i ordered the salt and pepper fried squid with chili mayo, salmon and crab meat pasta in tomato base and the escargot with mushroom in pesto cream..

The food didn't disappoint the fried squid was tasty on its own already. Crispy with a hint of saltiness, it was PERFECT with the chili mayo.. Pasta wise, the salmon was fried nicely to be crispy on the outside yet not overcooked so its not too hard.. If only there was more crab meat in that dish, it would be great.. they aren't over stingy with the crab meat either but I guess it broke into tiny fragments while being cooked. The escargot with mushroom pasta was nice too the bf loved their pesto cream.. on the first few bites its really not bad but as the portion was quite big it became a little too creamy towards the end..

Service was friendly and sincere. Totally enjoyed the dining experience there. Towards the end of our meal, 4 other groups of people came in so i guess their clients like their dinner late.. =)

will definately be back for more!

Great place for a quiet dinner, the ambience was relaxed and we had good food. Started with salmom chowder which actually had the fragrance of spices rather than fishy smells that usually accompany seafood chowder. Main course of cajun chicken was impressive. the chicken was not too oily, in fact it was juicy and topped with some special mushroom sauce, the combination raised this basic food to the level of a homely well-cooked dish.

Partner had the in house salad, good job with the salad dressing (sweet, fragrant, a hint of vinegar). The duck confitt was good for such a bistro establishment. not too oily with tender meat.

Skip the house-pour though, nothing spectacular. BYO for a small corkage fee instead.

service was impecable despite the crowds.

                              Jul 14, 2009
Been there quite a couple times, simply because the service is great, the ambience, well.. it gives a simple homely feel to it, and the food isn't all that bad. Not to say the food isn't good, it was definitely above acceptable, but I thought prices could probably come a little lower to make it more value for money. I usually have the spaghetti carbonara. If you are looking for the authentic italian style carbonara (I know how it should taste like because I've traveled across italy in search of carbonara and lived with italians who know how to make carbonara the italian way), it isn't all that authentic. There is too much cream but it is still something palatable if you are having a craving for it. I am not really a food gourmet, but if you want something more authentic, try da paolo. It isn't on the menu, but it is something every italian chef should know. I thought their pasta came closest to what I was looking for, although it is still quite some way away from the italians. I have also tried their duck. That was pretty good and I was impressed with the texture of the meat although I thought it was a little bit above value for money. Can't remember the rest, except that the brownie dessert wasn't all that great, but the service definitely makes up for it. Would recommend it if you are looking for something simple and not too complicated.
