I've eaten twice at Coastes, though it could have been many more times if not for its location in Sentosa (nothing wrong with that, just too troublesome and expensive to get there just for food, considering a $2 per head and $2 per car entry into Sentosa plus a $1 parking fee), and price (slightly overpriced, especially drinks, but hey it's on a beach in Sentosa, not one of the heartland malls). I must concede that the setting is very nice and idyllic (think beachfront with rustic deck chairs, it's quite hidden away although it's right by the busy touristy parts).
Twice, we had chicken wings and caesar salad only - first time coz a friend raves about the wings, and second time coz I was raving about the wings and had to get my parents to try them out. And of course wings are just wings, how orgasmic can they get? To be honest, I don't think they are like super fantastic, but they are really quite good in the sense that they are BBQ grilled (i could tell from the way there were unevenly charred, which adds to the robust flavor, but some people just hate that), on the large side (juicy and springy meat, not the fatty kind), well seasoned and glazed with honey. Apparently me and my friends dig them, but my mom thought otherwise, as she has never liked her meat sweet, even though they were just mildly so. So i figure it's really personal taste. But she did love Coastes' caesar salad, with its generous toppings of bacon bits and parmesan cheese on very fresh, crisp romaine. Though pretty expensive, the portions are generous, so don't believe what the menu says when it states salad for two -it really can feed four or more. We had a personal sized salad and it was just nice for three of us. We also noted the pizzas served to other guests, they looked good and we will surely try them on our next visit.
I had no problem with the price of food really, since portions were hearty and I am pretty used to eating at fancy places, but I thought the drinks could be a little cheaper. My frozen margarita was $14 and my dad's beer was $11, I think. Pretty steep for a beachfront, pay-first-at-counter type of restaurant, I'd say. To be fair, my margarita had a strong dosage of tequila, and was overflowing the good-sized glass.
Service-wise, it was pretty slow when we stepped in, as it had rained a little while just before we came, and we saw a couple of service staff busy wiping down the tables instead of attending to us. I caught one's attention by asking if we could sit at a particular table and all was well after that. However, the chairs were still wet, and we had to use our own supplies of napkins to wipe them dry. Well, it's beachfront, so I guess some moisture is OK. I had only one slight complaint about the attitude of the cashier who took my orders. While she wasn't rude or anything, she has this can't-be-bothered to smile and could-you-just-hurry-up-and-order attitude that made me feeling slightly less cheerful that evening. Thankfully, it was only a 2-min encounter.
To redeem that, the staff who cleared my table (I think he may be a supervisor, as he was dressed differently), was absolutely polite and friendly, and gladly helped me to doggy-bag my few remaining chicken wings. In fact, I wrote this review (my first, gosh!) mainly because he had been so nice to put in a new container or belacan chilli (a must-dip!) and a fresh lime. It was a pleasant surprise when I opened the box when I got home. Now, that is exceptional service that will bring me back to Coastes again, despite its price and location.
Must tries: BBQ chicken wings, caesar salad
