Good Food, Cute Manager..What More Are You Waiting For?
Mar 8, 2007A general rule of thumb when you are selecting a good Japanese restaurant is to check its popularity with the sizeable Japanese community here. People from Japan are passionate about their food and are extremely particular about its authenticity. Which is why Rakuzen gets the thumbs up from at least half the managers in my office.
I was lucky enough to be invited by my bosses (yet again) to this swanky eatery located a stone's throw away from my office. Rakuzen occupies the former shop space shared by Sushi Tei and Starbucks Coffee and feels deceptively roomy, thanks to its sleek and elegant use of space. Curved booth seats, private dining rooms and discreet blinds create comfortable alcoves that diners will find extremely inviting. At Rakuzen, every table has the potential to become "the best seats in the restaurant". It all depends on how many people you're dining with and the degree of privacy you prefer.
But enough of waxing lyrical about how amazing the seats are. The real reason why you should pay Rakuzen a visit is because of its food. Rakuzen serves modern Japanese cuisine, and the best way to sample food here is to round up a couple of friends and try as many of its dishes as you can.
Being the seafood manic that I am, I found the whole scallop grilled with cheese and mayonnaise very hard to resist. And it was utterly sinful because it was topped with generous helpings of shredded crab meat (scream). The seafood salad was a wonderful starter; it came with large chunks of sashimi and lovely ponzu dressing. Other must-trys include its beef tataki (so soft it melts in your mouth) and grilled mackerel.
A tip for fans of very fresh seafood: Rakuzen ships in its seafood every Tuesday and Friday, so mark these two days on your calendar for a dinner date! The restaurant also offers affordable lunch sets and special dining offers for customers who dine al fresco.
Almost forgot...Rakuzen is also home to a dishy Japanese manager. Great seats, good food, nice looking staff...need I say more?

Bad Yakitori!
Jun 13, 2008As a lover of Yakitori, i think one should judge how good a restaurant is by the perfection each skewer turns out. Excuses should not be given for lack of quality of meat (that's why you're paying restaurant price right?) nor should blame be put on the number of people dining there.
Decided to head to Rakuzen after gym one day and ordered an array of skewers including tongue, and pork and aspargus sticks to name a few. The tongue was overdone, with hardly any flavouring, giving the meat a peculiar overwhelming taste. It was chewy and tough, with what seemed like sinews that got stuck in the teeth. Not a good choice for a first date as yanking hard on a skewer is definitely pretty unsightly for your dinner partner. The pork was barely seasoned and tough, and we were really disappointed with the rest of the sticks that we ordered. At this point can't remember which ones they were, but do recall feeling sorely disappointed.
Another thing to gripe about was the biased service that was given to us. Granted my partner and myself look young, that is no reason for them to give more attention to the seemingly affluent mature company next to us. One of the things Singapore service staff need to learn about is never to judge a book by its cover. And the staff at Rakuzen have a lot to learn. Our server not only gave our food to the people next to us, much to their confusion, she also did not apologize when they pointed out she made a mistake. Behind us at another table, there was a wait staff who spent a good twenty minutes idly chatting with a flirtacious old man and his tai tai wife while others waved their hands desperately to be served.
I would definitely NOT recommend anyone to waste money and time on a place like this - a joint that has spent too much money on beautifying the place but with bad food and service.
I would suggest this place to someone who goes for design and aesthetics and isn't too particular about how chewy their meat is. Sorry to be cruel, but I do hope Rakuzen ups their standards! They've got a beautiful setting!!
My advice: Head to Keyaki, Pan Pacific for excellent food and even better service to EVERYONE. For Yakitori sticks, head to Nanbantei at FEP or Shinryoku at Purvis St. For economical yet quality Japanese, I'd suggest Wisma Atria Food Republic. Fast service too.I also recommend this place for

totally zen, till you lose your footing...
Sep 16, 2007One question- is the big ball outside the door for feng shui??? it kinda obstruct the doorway rite???
all i remember is going to eat dinner with GF after a super heavy night of Vit A and still feeling the effects even after a nap in the room. Easier for me to eat across the road for something hot and soupy i reckon...
I had the udon nabe which came in a piping hot clayhot. The soup was a fragrant dashi broth and with slices of fishcake, some prawns and chewy delicious udon topped with an egg. I mean for my current palate, to taste this udon really is tough as it is like so muted... so i must give the verdict that it is one delicous udon i was having.
most prob will go back to renew my "aquaintance" with this one hotpot... -
Good food service atmosphere
Sep 15, 2007Food was good and they offer very money valuable set dinner. One of my eating companion could not take beef and the chef compromised her and replaced it with chicken, which was super tender.
The waitress was excellent and recommended us great food like the $7 small salad which was really tasty and valuable with raw fish cubes. They provided private dinning seats with serene atmosphere.

Rakuzen Outside Table Promotion
Sep 5, 2007The Rakuzen's outdoor table promotion was great. It only cost S$12.+++ a bento meal. Though there wasn't any other combination, it stuffed me from the miso soup, chawanmushi to the hearty main dish.
My friend and I ordered tempura on the side and the shrimp was a little tough. Free flow or hot green tea which was quite refreshing.
One thing disappointed me was the resto does not serve GYOZA. I love gyoza and was looking for other small side dishes to order but the menu does not seem to have a lot of variety.
I guess their quality went own a little... :(I also recommend this place for

Worth checking out the sets
Aug 21, 2007I second the reviewer's take that this place offers value for money set lunches.
Indeed quite a bit comes with the set lunches - we ordered the teriyaki zen ($20) and tempura zen ($24) sets which came with an array of sashimi. I can't see how you can walk out after having one of the sets complaining that you're still not full. The food is not bad - nothing to shout about but value for money.
Also tried the Agedashi Tofu ($8) which was good.
At lunchtime the place was bustling as it was packed with peeps working in the Suntec / Millenia area.Must Tries

Value for money set lunches
Jul 31, 2007Went here for lunch last Friday. We were immediately shown a table enclosed in a semi-private booth. This seating arrangement was excellent as I hate those places whereby you can easily reach out and grab someone else's food. Also, noise was not a factor even though the place was packed.
The menu was really extensive and the prices pretty reasonable. Ordered two set lunches, the sashimi yakizakan zen (sashimi and grilled fish set, you have a choice of 3 types of fish) [$22] and the sukiyaki zen ($18). Real value for money as it came with rice, pickles, miso soup, chawan mushi and a jelly dessert. Can see pictures at http://wawafoodandtravel.blogspot.com/2007/07/lunch-at-rakuzen.html
The service here was efficient and polite and the free flow of fragrant hot green tea kept flowing. (plus points in my books). The set dinner has slightly more options with the price about $5 more than the set lunches. Was told that they have an al la carte lunch buffet on weekends for $48.
Overall, food was good, ambience was good and service also good.I also recommend this place for

My Go-To Jap restaurant for a good value dinner
Jul 24, 2007I've dined here 4 times now and I still have not managed to venture further from Rakuzen's set lunches/dinners - because they are so good and so good value.
My favourite is the chirashi don set: you get miso soup, chawanmushi, salad, pickles, a small side dish, and the chirashi don, all for $25 ++. It is a lot of good food for not very much money. Rakuzen's rice is also outstanding - fragrant, plump, chewy and nicely flavoured, which sets off the seafood on the rice perfectly. Service is pretty good, and they are generous with their free ocha/water and refills. Their green tea is very fragrant, and their iced ocha tastes a little like the korean rice water drinks, nutty and refreshing.
The ambience of the place is also lovely. The restaurant is quite large, but I usually get seated closer to the back where there are several cosy and semi-private booths for about 4 people to share. Scattered around are also round table booths which look lovely for a family or group of about 5-6 to share, I imagine.
One day I must try the a la carte stuff, but in the meantime, Rakuzen's set dinners rank very high on my good price - yum food list [Restaurant Category]. :)I also recommend this place for
