Never be a greed
May 21, 2009I heard about HGW website is a hit recently so I decided to join in as a member to write some reviews on good restaurants I have been.
As to say, I witnessed some unfair incidents , I just felt a need to breathe it out as a Singaporean.
I went dining at this restaurant with my family after reading all the good reviews. The flow of their service and food quality was quite the same as what others have reviewed.
In the midst of our dining, I heard a gentleman next table to us questioning a staff with an angry face why was his coke filled up with so much ice and that cost $4?
The staff replied "THANK YOU for your feedback" and left. A moment later, she came back with a fresh glass of coke smiled and greeted that was a compliment from the shop. Never did I hear the gentleman was happy or shy upon his request, he just sipped and sipped into his drink and carried on his meal.
For this action reacted by the management & team of this restaurant, I wanted to rate their service as 10 because I have not yet seen the same amount of genouristy from any shops who does this and never did the staff give faces to the customer. I feel there are Singaporeans out there trying to take advantage or make a hard life for service people.
I reconised good services is a rare these days in Singapore, and I am here to cheer for those who are in this business, carry on your good work and SMILES for your customers!Must Tries

Great service & good food !
Apr 14, 2009My group of party friends wanted to surprise me by organizing an early birthday celebration this april for me. I didn't know this place at all till they brought me here. We had reservation for 10 of us and the tables and all were already set when we arrived.
Most of us do not know what we have to order so the waitress came to explain and given us the option to cook ourselves or get the chef to prepare even we were seated on their level 2, that says, customers to cook on their own. Some of us wanted to cook on their own but afew of us wanted the chef to prepare. Usually on busy hour at 7pm on a Saturaday, restaurants staff or owner would not even care, they will want us to follow their rules and regulation, I find it amazing the staff had the initiative to check with her boss and ensure us they will prepare the way we wanted to be, also it's our first time there, they should "educate" us on to cook ourselves, pretty impressive with they way they handled customers! ; )
About the food, like some Japanese food I have tried, comes with Tempura, Teppanyaki etc. This Sumomo restaurant created something more than just a Okonomiyaki house, reason is to cater to different customers' needs. It gaves us more variety to choose rather than just okonomiyaki. Overall, my group likes the food and the great service this restaurant has provide!
Thumbs up for their great effort and I will definately go back when our next gathering is near! Cheers!Must Tries

Great hangouts for Japanese food lovers
Jul 2, 2009I kept hearing my friends wanted to go this restaurant.
I don't know where Prinsep street was till we went.
It was a surprise when we heard we can cook our own in this little inn.
We made reservation and was addressed by the svc staff upon arrival, great impact that we were "kids" but addressed us like adults, felt great. Service overall was alittle slow but timely delivery on our orders, it was full house on a Monday night though.
Food choices, my fave:
1) Yakisoba ( All mixed), it was such a well-blended taste, it's my first time but I never forget, the mixture of the mayonnaise and sauces were just nicely done! Not too much but right portion for a personal consumption.
2) Hotplate with Tsukune (chicken tender meat): it was explained by the waitress it's tigh meat with a fresh egg added on top. Can't imagine this but when it was served, oh mine! It was delicious! I've tried those in other jap shops, it's like yakitori style, but this is big! Alittle saulty so it's best goes with plain rice.
The side orders we ordered were all tasty and nice. Will surely return for more good food and I like the embience that is with great music!Must Tries

Yummy Authentic Japanese Okonomiyaki
Jun 25, 2009Stumbled upon this quaint little Japanese restaurant one hot Monday night with my girlfriend and was pleasantly surprised to find this to be a unique and quiet eating place.
Was seeking for a good authentic Okonomiyaki and boy was I pleasantly surprised. Serving was just nice for sharing, I strongly recommend the all mixed okonomiyaki. You can even choose to make your own or allow the chef to cook for you.
My favourite dishes are
1)Nabe - a chicken ball soup with a sweet unique taste that makes you want to drink more
2)Japanese cheesecake specially air flown from japan with the specially concocted Japanese milk tea by the sweet lady boss. Cake is smooth and cheese not overpowering. For those who like red bean, green tea and smooth cheesecake
3)Somen - Japanese thin cold noodles. excellent choice for a warm sunny day
4)Sashimi - Oh this is truly fresh fish.
Food portion is reasonable, however I recommend ordering some dishes to share to enjoy the different variety of food. Budget of each meal can be easily managed if you choose wisely
I like the fact that this place is not too crowded, not too noisy for a get-together with friends. The service staff not only make good recommendations, they also do their best to make every customer feels important. Venue of this place is centrally located, making it easy to meet friends.Must Tries

Sub standard food only
Jun 24, 2009Well, apparently after reading the reviews, I decided to try it out with my man last week. It was an utter disappointment. The 1st impression : quiet, only two tables occupied - which made me wonder why a good "yummy" place will turn out crowd-less.
The place I sat upstairs was HOT. burning hot with the spotlight shining on me. That makes me wonder if I'm supposed to be part of the okonomiyaki.
Service is good I must say (than again there aint many people) The lady boss was also very attentive. Only problem is, it gets REALLY uncomfortable after awhile when you see the waitress and the lady boss walking pass you and asking you hows the food so very often. No privacy. We didnt feel at ease eating at all!
Green tea was served and my man who is a great Japanese foodie shook his head immediately - the green tea must have been boiled since morning. It didnt feel japanese green tea at all! (too diluted too)
Food was sub standard, well, if the portion was bigger, for the kind of price I paid, (or if they lower the price) I wouldnt mind going back again but it's this pricy and the serving small - no way!
I think one of the ways they can improve is
1) price
2) lightings
3) ventilation
4) Promotions (maybe credit cards promo?) Vouchers?
5) Have a ladies night or something
6) more varieties in the menu
7) be generous with the quality and serving of the food.Must Tries

Nice Okonomiyaki-ya
Jun 14, 2009I went there today, Sunday, with my wife and daughter and we were the first customers in the restaurant. We were seated upstairs near the window which was pleasant and the staff was very efficient and friendly without making us feel rushed.
We ordered buta tama (pork), ebi tama (shrimp) and yakisoba. All the items were quite good and tasty. If I was nitpicking, I'd prefer the ebi to be larger and the slices of pork more obvious, and the size was on the small size for the okonomiyaki for the price IMHO. Could have been a little larger overall. Taste was just fine. My wife prefers no mayonnaise and so that came as requested which was good (after seeing the one bad review below I thought I'd call it out that we had no problems) and on the other we did have mayonnaise and the volume of mayonnaise was just fine, not over mayo-ed as Botejyu does in Liang Court (too heavy I think).
I'll certainly go back to try other items on the menu. As okonomiyaki goes I thought this was just fine though the price is certainly something to think about. One other small issue is that they do not accept American Express or NETs. Just cash and MC/Visa. Annoying to me.Spent about

Superb Customer Service & Yummy food
Jun 2, 2009Thumb up for the excellent service from the pretty lady boss who are always very attentive to my request.
Definitely a great place for GOOD food & ambience. An Interesting, Unusual and Fun way to cook your very own DIY Okonomiyaki. Don't worry if you do not know how to cook for the first time as there are cute instruction placed on the table as well as staff are around to assist you at all times.
Also, there are plenty choices for different variety of food and drinks. (YUMMY)
Will definitely introduce this place to all my friends. THUMB UP for the great service. Keep it up!!! Cheers!!!)Must Tries

My New Found in Singapore!
May 25, 2009Recommended by my secretary last week.
First, I was not sure to organise our dinner party there because I have not tried it on myself, and being a typical Japanese, I am quite skeptical about new Japanese restaurant.....
It was a busy friday evening, once we stepped it, we were greeted with friendly warm smiles by the waitress.
Food, sake and shochu meet up to our expectation, especially the okonomiyaki--hontoni oishii des! It was like back home, tasting my favourite food! (as I come from Osaka, okonomiyaki is the origin there)
Prices on the menu were also affordable, comparing to most Okonomiyaki restaurants in Singapore, I am surprised!
We were all very happy about the food & service.
Will definately go back for more okonomiyaki!
Sumomo Okonomiyaki--Ganbette kudasai!

Shocking Service!
May 23, 2009I'm currently a big fan of okonomiyaki so this place piques my interest after reading much glowing reviews about its specialties (okonomiyaki, of course!) and service. Hence, this was the place to have an early birthday celebration last sat.
The Grilled Corn ($8+) was very good! Sweet, not too buttery and a little charred, I can have this everyday. But all of us agreed it was too expensive. The menu printed "Only at $8 for real corn bites!". ONLY $8? I can easily buy 2 cobs of corn from NTUC for 1/8 of that price. Oh well, at least, it was nice and I didn't regret ordering that.
When I ordered the Ebi-tama ($14+), I had no idea it would cause so much trouble. If you know me well, you'd have known that I don't eat mayonnaise. And I made that clear to the waitress while ordering. Even so, she served me one with mayo and said "she forgot". I sent it back and when she put another one in front of me, I realised that she merely scrapped the mayo off and there were still little patches on it. Hence, I requested to see the manager who was downstairs. The waitress came back awhile later and said the manager was too busy to see me. So she had the chef to make a new one for me and told me not to tell her manager what happened! We were so shocked to hear that. Apparently, she didn't even tell her manager I wanted to see her. Putting myself in the manager's shoes, I would want to know of such an incident. So in the end, I did tell the manager about it and she apologized profusely. She even brought the waitress to our table to apologize, which was uncalled for to us since it was a very uncomfortable moment. I think the waitress's eyes were shooting daggers at us!
The Modan-Yaki ($24+) was a combination of okonomiyaki and yakisoba, mixed in with pork, squid, octopus and shrimps. Like the Ebi-tama, it was good and decent but not that great either to justify the price tag. Nevertheless, it was a hearty and healthy meal.
The manager who seems to be the lady owner was very polite after we told her about the incident. Even though there was a gross service lapse, she didn't waive the service charge which I think would be a good gesture of service recovery. I'm not sure I'll go back since the waitress may well remember us for a long time to come. I don't want to risk my food being handled by her again!

Pancakes
May 22, 2009I liked the corn. I wish it was bigger. :)
I liked the milk tea. The milk tea has a fragrant after taste. It's in a red tin.
I think the pancakes are good.
The lady boss is nice.
Instead of cabbage though, perhaps we can have dfferent vegtables on the side.

Good customer attendance also has to pay!
May 20, 2009Before I came across this shop at Sumomo, I have tried others in Singapore that offers the same service- DIY style. The price was far way too expenive for just okonomiyaki. I am just glad after been introduced by friend to this site, I found this Sumomo restaurant with equivalent great food with excellent service after I've experienced!
My favourite food in the shop is their Modan Yaki, which was prepared by the chef. We tried the all mixed okonomiyaki cooking on our own, it was fantastic! we have so much joy in creating our own shape!
Others that we tried:
1)Stir-fried pork belly with yasai (vegetables),
2)Takoyaki,
3)Chicken karaage
were all AS GOOD as their signature Okonomiyaki!
I think it's hard to find a place to get good food with excellent service = cheap price! I read so much about the comparison on prices from other reviewer's point of view, but I have to say, I believe good customer attendance need to pay a price these days! (and that is why service staff work hard for their tippings!)Must Tries

A one-time thing
May 20, 2009Other reviewers have gone into details about which level to sit and all that, so I can just relate my experience there on a more personal level.
Upon reading the good reviews on this site, I went there to celebrate my birthday last week. And I have to say that Sumomo Okonomiyaki is a little overrated.
The food is decent, no doubt about it. We had the mixed okonomiyaki, and the beef stew for our mains. The okonomiyaki was fun to make, and the beef stew was sweet and tasty. For more information though, the milk tea was fragrant and sweet, and the green tea cheese cake delightful. The service was also very good – this is one advantage the restaurant holds over its competitors. Service was attentive and quick, a rarity to be honest.
If you’re going for serviced home-cooked food, then this is it. But for the price, I expected better. The okonomiyaki cost $18, can’t remember the price of the beef, but it was probably around $15, and the cheesecake with tea was another $15. A bowl of white rice cost $3, though it was some pretty good rice. Maybe I went with unrealistic expectations, but I am not likely to go back to this place, because my pockets are realistic, and I can find other restaurants that sell similarly yummy fare that cost less.Must Tries
