really good quality and value, though nothing particularly outstanding

i was really excited about my first visit to this 'hidden gem' as i really dig japanese cuisine and pride myself on knowing most if not all of the really good ones in singapore. was pleasantly surprised that shinobu is open on sundays, considering the location. even better that it was practically empty, which makes for a quiet environment perfect for a relaxing sunday evening and good conversation.
my dinner companion and i decided against going for the sets despite the positive reviews as we wanted to try a bit of everything, especially our favourites which (to us) is a test of how good a dining place really is.
just a point to note, sake selection is extremely limited here (i believe there's only 3 choices of cold sake and 1 hot) so if you are here to drink as well, don't expect too much.
anyway, to the food. here's what we ordered:
chawanmushi ($6) and zuwai kani tama mushi ($10)the chawanmushi is really well done and extremely tasty. i can't find fault with it. my companion had the zuwai kani tama mushi (essentially snow crab chawanmushi) which was just as good and just loaded with ingredients. her only gripe was that there was not enough egg because of the sheer volume of ingredients. :)
assortment of sushi - hotate ($9), salmon ($5), kani ($4), hamachi ($6), unagi ($6)the sushi assortment were all of really good quality and fresh. again, nothing much to pick on.
gindara miso ($16)cod is one of my favourites and perhaps because of this, i had high expectations. i must say that the gindara was a bit disappointing as the miso-like sauce, while good, was pretty much overwhelming (in taste and quantity) such that you cannot really appreciate the cod. furthermore, the cod was sliced too thin, in my opinion. could be much better. fish is fresh though.
teppanyaki prawns ($18)having read all the reviews here about how good this dish is, i obviously had to try it. i must agree that the sauce is indeed delectable and the prawn is pretty fresh as well. a good dish, if not wow.
negitoro handroll ($12)apologies, i don't remember what exactly goes into this handroll as my dinner companion ordered this. apparently it's yummy, but don't take my word for it. :)
a pleasant surprise was an automatic 15% discount given in my total bill, which i did not realise until after paying the bill. i'm not sure if there was a current promotion (i paid by amex) but given that the food was already reasonable priced, the discount was just icing to the cake!
shinobu is definitely a place you would want to try if you want good quality japanese cuisine without a massive bill. it is without a doubt value for your money. though the food is good, there is nothing quite so outstanding as to tempt me to come back often. i would eat here again though if i'm around the area, for sure.
oh, one more thing that struck me. i noticed a group of diners leaving and they brought their pet dog with them. this leads me to think that this place is pet-friendly, which is rare indeed. however, i believe you would have to be dining in one of the private rooms.

I also recommend this place for
Type of meal:Lunch, Dinner
Occasion:Large Groups/Gathering, Children/Family, Client Meetings/Business Dining, After Work, Private Dining
Atmosphere:Quiet/Peaceful, Hidden Find
