I was very excited to hear about the new Sapporo Ramen Stall in Bukit Panjang Plaza.
I ordered the Chef's recommendation - the Special Sapporo Miso Ramen and a side of gyoza and some Tempura prawns.
The main thing with ramen is that the soup has to be absolutely burning hot - so hot you can barely put the spoon to your mouth without scalding your lips and tongue. When you blow onto the soup there should be plenty of steam coming off. Unfortunately the soup here felt tepid and needed to be much hotter for satsifaction. It was well seasoned and tasted authentic although i prefer my soup much more salty. I enjoyed the soft boiled egg as well. The noodles were OK.
The gyoza was a little watery and had undoubtedly been frozen previously. The tempura was nice but a little oily and possibly the oil was a little old.
There is free flow green tea - either hot or iced and the waitress was very keen to keep me filled up. |

| Ultra fresh Sashimi
There are two eating areas to this restaurant. A cheap dine in within the shop itself or an actual restaurant which is located in a separate area outside the shop. I only found this out after we had paid and left. The main problem eating inside the shop is that the tables are placed very close to each other and therefore you could be sat only half a metre away from your fellow diners which can be a little off putting.
To start you chose your fish from a chilled counter and then ask the waitress to have it sliced for you. There is a very large selection and therefore you will be spoilt for choice. The fish looks very fresh and you can tell by the way the flesh glistens in the light. I was very conservative and went for tuna and salmon but the waitress did recommend a local fish sashimi which is "in season" at the moment but unfortunately I forget the name.
We had free flow green tea with a selection of other starters including tofu salad - silken tofu covered in a tangy miso based dressing with sesame seeds; ordinary salad dressed in a ponzu sauce; edamame; and finally some roll sushi.
I can always tell how good a Japanese restaurant is based on their egg roll and this was up to scratch. The sashimi was sliced beautifully and melt in your mouth.
Overall the food was very good but yet again we felt a little let down as food came in dribs and drabs. We hoped the appetisers would come first (as they should do) - after all, they are supposed to stimulate your appetite for your main course. Disappointingly they came at the end after our sushi and sashimi... How irritating.
If you eat within the shop then there is no service charge and GST so our food was really cheap and we left feeling full having only spent $45 in total. I would probably come again but I would try and do it on a weekday lunchtime rather than a busy weekend during school holidays. |

| Best Wanton Mee in Town
If you've not tried this place before this is a "Die Die MUST try" place.
I was taken here by my friend who has been coming here for years and I had a large bowl of dry wanton mee. Costs $4.50 for large and $3.50 for standard size.
It is located what looks like a car park just off Raffles Square. The hawker centre is scruffy but the queues for the place can be very long.
The noodles were al dente and beautifully integrated with the gravy. the chilli sauce was piquant but not blow your socks off. It came with a huge helping of thickly, beautifully cooked cut char siu on top with a fried wanton, and another delicious fried tofu based topping. It all came in a zen-like black bowl. The soup came on the side with two fat juicy wanton within it.
This is certainly a nomination for Makansutra and it is worth hunting out for.
I thoroughly recommend this place. |

| Standard Western Chain - burgers, ribs, steaks - nothing Australian really
THis is your bog standard restaurant with an Ozzie theme with no real Ozzie Food. It could well have been a TGI Friday or a Hard Rock Cafe or an American steak and rib place. However if you like the above then you will feel at home.
Food itself was OK and my "Mad Max" burger was cooked nicely (medium). Personally the Brewerkz burger is better than this but I enjoyed the crispy bacon on the top. My wife's steak (medium) was too rare and got sent back to the kitchen for another few minutes on the grill. It did come back replated and was done without any questioning by the waitress. Looking at the previous reviews perhaps she must be used to it! The service was generally very good.
The Kids menu was not cheap - around $11 but the serving was generous and my 4 and 2 year olds shared a plate between them. It also came with a free drink.
Would I go back - probably not as once you have eaten in one of these "themed restaurants" the food is all the same and not good for your waistline! |

| Check out their lunch promo
I had mixed feelings about this restaurant. Some goods but mainly bad.
Service wise - I thought fairly typical Singaporean gormless waitress who spoke poor English. Shje didn't manage a smile the whole time we were there. 50c compulsory charge for a pathetic wet wipe to clean your hands. The menus sheets looked tired, old and dirty - in need of one thing - the bin.
We ordered two set lunches. Fairly straight forward you may think but how difficult is it for an empty restaurant at the start of lunch service to be totally unable to bring two meals at the same time. I sat waiting for my lunch for almost 5 mins whilst my mother in law's food slowly went cold as she politely refused to eat until mine arrived.
Food itself was nice but nothing amazing. I had the Sashimi Bento $13 which came with a couple of thick cut yellowtail, tuna and salmon sashimi and my mother in law had a lunch bowl filled with rice and a choice of 3 pieces of Yakitori (can't remember all the choices but she had salmon, shitake mushroom and meatball) covered with teriyaki sauce for a record breaking, recession busting $4.80. Not surprisingly most other customers were also having the same.
Probably won't come back and it invariably surprises me that a restaurant which specialises in Yakitori seems to serve pan-Japanese food - everything from sashimi to tempura to ramen. Why not simply do one type of food WELL rather than try and please the crowds serving EVERYTHING? |

| Finally lost my Kaya Toast virginity
I'm British and have been coming and going to Singapore for over 10 years now and I have never eaten Kaya Toast before. The whole concept of some sticky sweet curdy paste (reminiscent of English lemon curd) with loads of butter smeared on toast never appealed to me. Personally a cup of coffee with a plate of Chicken Rice or prata or even fishball noodles is a Singapore breakfast for me.
As I have heard that Ya Kun is one of the "heavyweights" of coffee shops in Singapore and churns out really good Kaya Toast I thought I'd have a go. Personally I don't know what all the fuss is about. I suspect its not the Kaya Toast but I simply don't have a sweet tooth. I found the combination of sweet bread, sweet paste and sweet coffee a complete sugar overload and left me feeling extremely thirsty and ready to bounce off the walls of the airport. Having said this, I enjoyed the flavour of the coffee. It is apparently roasted in butter before it is ground.
The family sitting next to me were tucking into a really yummy bowl of Mee Siam. My mouth was watering watching them guzzle it down!
Overall it was nice to try something different but next time I'll just have the coffee to go. |

This place was suggested by my in-laws as a place where my university friends can have a reunion. They did warn us that the service was pretty dismal, but to be honest that is the case in most Singapore restaurants and they said that the ambiance more than made up for the dozy waitresses. It has been suggested that they are only interested in serving expats – but their eyes aren’t glued to Ang Mo’s they’re glued to the middle distance somewhere!
Well, they were pretty much right about the service but we kept it nice and simple for them by reserving a table and only ordering two large platters – the Indonesian and the Indian. These arrived together and were more than enough food for 6 of us, including some big eaters! They weren’t particularly speedy about drinks (which were decently priced), but with good company, and a lovely atmosphere we forgave their slowness.
The food was good. The Indonesian platter included good satay (even enjoyed by a friend who doesn’t normally like satay), otak otak, yummy beef rendang and really everything on it was tasty. Similarly the Indian platter had some lovely curries, tasty chicken tandoori and a delicious King prawn dish. We can’t actually remember everything that was on it, but nothing was horrible! It wasn’t mind blowing food – but it’s nice to try a little bit of lots of things, and seemed good value for money.
We finished off with drinks in the bar (again, less than speedy service!), and for a while, we could forget we were 200m from a main road and felt like we were on an island paradise. There are lots of water features and beautiful landscaping so an evening there really feels like an escape. Unlike other reviewers, I would argue that such a unique and relaxing ambiance means you can forgive any shortcomings in the service. Accept that you have to take your time over a visit there, and pretend you are on holiday. |

| Wood definitely go back again!
Searching for a place to eat at Vivo City can be difficult. There are just so many places and it can be very hit and miss. When you add kids into the equation it turns into a bit of a nightmare.
We liked the idea of Wood as it seems to have an interesting menu and a unique concept of food being cooked in a wood fired oven.
When we arrived at the restaurant, which is tucked away in a far corner of Vivo we were greeted by a smartly dressed lady who looked like a receptionist sat behind a booth. Unfortunately there was a wall behind the booth which lined a narrow corridor into the restaurant so we were unable to see whether it was smart or kiddy friendly. We looked at the menu and was pleased to see that Amex Cardholders were entitled to 15% off food on the a la carte menu.
Lured by the Amex promotion, we decided to give the restaurant a go and the lady led us down the narrow corridor into the restaurant. My first impression was Wow, followed by Oh My God - how am I going to cope with two naughty girls aged 3 and 1 in such a smart, quiet place, surrounded by couples and businessmen eating their lunch. We were offered a large circular table with a lovely view of Sentosa outside and the large industrial sized wood burning oven inside. We quickly decided that eating outdoors was probably the best option as then the kids could shout and scream as much as they like and would leave people dining inside to eat in peace.
I certainly felt more relaxed once we stepped outside and the waitress quickly brought a high chair. My two children loved the view of Sentosa and were fascinated by the colours of the monorail trains which were running frequently. It wasn't too hot as there was a lovely sea breeze blowing although it was occasionally contaminated by the stench of cigarette smoke blowing in our direction by a couple of the kitchen staff who must have been on their break sitting on a table quite a fair distance away.
The major question was what my 1 year old could eat. There is no kids menus here. My father in law ordered the sausage platter ($16++) as a main which both my kids would probably nibble and a caesar salad as my eldest like boiled eggs. We asked if they did bread but the staff said there was no bread which I thought was unusual - the first thing I would select for cooking in a wood oven would be bread! ( I didn't realise that so many previous reviewers had complimentary bread with their meals)
The waitress also informed us that jugs of Tiger were 15.80++ (AWESOME!) This is their promotion to celebrate their one year anniversary of opening.
We ordered two set meals (four course lunches) $28++ which comes with a soft drink.
1) caesar salad
2) soup of the day - leek and potato
3) grilled tenderloin - medium rare
4) Passionfruit icecream with fruit.
I ordered their signature dish Grilled Clam rice. $25++
The caesar salads came very quickly which had home made bread croutons on top. We gave all our bread to my youngest daughter who absolutely loved it. We asked the waitress if she could possibly get some more and she went away to the kitchen and came out with a complimentary bowl of croutons to my daughters delight! Not only did we have peace and quiet - she was actually eating too!
Soup was homemade and was spiced with white pepper and was rather nice. The sausages were served on a metal hotplate and had a whiff of woodsmoke to it. They were a hit with the kids.
When the tenderloins arrived my wife was amazed. It was beautifully presented and the meat was probably the most tender she has ever eaten. Cooked to perfection. It came with fresh garden vegetables.
I was a little disappointed that my main course didn't arrive with the others but it was certainly a case of "the best comes to those who wait". My Grilled Clam rice came with 4 huge prawns garnished with chopped tomatoes and ginger. There was a side dish containing a delicious chili padi with chopped birdseye chillis, a dash of salt, sweetness and good quality sesame oil. It was served in a huge granite bowl which has been in the wood oven. The Japanese rice lying next to the rock had a nice crispiness. It was infused with a delightful seafood aroma coming from a generous portion of fresh clams scattered within the rice. The prawns were grilled to perfection and were simply divine. I would give this dish alone 95/100!
My Kids had passionfruit icecreams donated from the set menu by their mum and grandma and they wolfed the lot down!
This was a lovely meal, good service and Wood did not let us down. Well Done, and Thank you. |

| Kiddy orientated restaurant, good value set lunch but beware of service
Spageddies is a family friendly restaurant geared up to children especially. I am a father of a 3 and 1 year old. I have constant headaches on where to eat out. My youngest tends to throw her dinner around the dining room especially when she doesn't like what she is given and my oldest seems to be very fussy and always chooses McDonalds when asked what restaurant she wants to eat in. HELP!
The restaurant seems to be a few feet above the walkway in the shopping mall and there is a ramp so that you can get your pushchair up it. The kids were immediately given colouring crayons and an activity sheet. There were enough highchairs which can be a real problem in some restaurants. All kid dinners are priced at $7.50++, served with juices or soft drinks. There was enough choice:
(1) Spaghetti / Butter, Cheese
(2) Spaghetti / Meatball
(3) Kiddie Pizza
(4) Spaghetti Meat Sauce
(5) Spaghetti / Tomato Sauce
(6) Ravioli with Cheese
(7) Macaroni & Cheese
(8) Chicken Nuggets & Fries
(9) Fish & Chips
We went for the spaghetti Meatball with apple juice. (we kept it very quiet from our eldest that there were chicken nuggets and chips on the menu!)
The set lunch came is a variety of mains with either a soup (chicken Gumbo) or coffee. I chose the Pan Fried Dory Fish with spaghetti and roasted vegetables (courgette, broccoli etc) and seemed good value at $13.90++
Our waiter seemed fairly knowledgable and asserted several times to my wife that the caesar salad came with warm chicken. We ordered our meals and my soup which came very quickly afterwards followed by a lovely bowl of spaghetti with napolitana sauce and a huge solitary homemade looking meatball. My oldest daughter was impressed. My soup was a little watery and tasted a little like an adapted version of minestrone with a token cube of chicken fillet and a small (chorizo) sausage. So far so good!
It started to go a little pear shaped from this point onwards. My wife's warm chicken caesar salad arrived and unsurprisingly had cold chicken on it despite what our waiter had said. Wife sent it back to the kitchen so that they could microwave it - the chicken rather than the salad! My Dory fish fillet was beautifully seasoned with black pepper and cajun spices but looked disappointing on initial impression as it had the most minisucle amount of spaghetti on it. The vegetables were fresh and nicely done.
It was such a shame as my wife would not have ordered the salad if she was correctly informed that the chicken was cold and Come On, Spaghetti is not expensive - give me a decent portion to match the lovely slab of Dory Fish.
The girls shared the spaghetti meatball. They loved it so much as there were no vegetable "bits" in the spaghetti sauce and the meatball was so fresh and tasty. The girls were practically licking the left over sauce out of the empty bowl.
Overall - a successful meal for the kids as they were well behaved, enjoyed their food and had colouring in whilst waiting for their meal. Luckily for Spaghettis there was no food flung around the place as my two girls enjoyed a good lunch. Hooray! |
