| a good salad experience
I have had the opportunity to dine at Salad Shop a number of times with different, and each time my experience there has been generally pleasant. Salad Shop (like most salad places) gives you the opportunity to choose what you want to put into your salad, and what dressing you’d like to have go with your greens. They also offer two soups a day (soup of the day and premium soup of the day) and a variety of drinks (smoothies, juices, coffee and tea). The salad comes in three sizes – rabbit ($6), zebra ($8) and elephant ($10) size. This characterisation is however, not entirely accurate because the size of the salad generally remains the same, although the “large size” (and therefore more expensive salad) allows you to add premium ingredients (or “feeds” as they call it). A rabbit size gives you a choice of base and 4 main feeds. A zebra size gives you the base, 4 main feeds and 2 supplementary feeds. An elephant size gives you the base, 4 main feeds, 2 supplementary feeds and 1 prime feed. So anyway, you have a selection of salad bases – mixed lettuce, deli leaves and baby spinach as well as a warm base – potato and cous cous. You can have all the bases, or none at all – which for some is a very big draw, because of the choice it affords. The main feeds (which you get a choice of 4 or more at an additional 50cents per feed) comprise of the usual suspects – think carrot, broccoli, croutons, pine nuts, boiled egg, brown rice, beans, jalapenos, capers, peppers, pasta, sweet corn, onion, bean sprouts, tomatoes (which they accidentally left out on their printed menu, but it is available). I think theres a selection of around 37 or so mains to choose from. Then if you get a zebra or elephant size (or pay an additional $1.50 per serving), as mentioned above you get a choice of two supplementary feeds which include things like apricots dried blueberries or cranberries, roasted tomatoes or peppers, blue / cheddar/ parmesan cheese, bacon bits, poached chicken. And their prime feeds (which would be an additional $3 per serving if you don’t go their elephant size) gives you the selection of bacon strips, parma ham, roast beef / chicken / turkey, chicken tikka, smoked duck / salmon, crayfish, prawns and scallop. I usually go with the roast beef (which come in generously sized slices, but could be cut smaller to be easier to eat if you ask me) but my friend raves about their smoked duck (which I tried a bit off and there wasn’t too strong a ducky taste) and I think their crayfish also wasn’t badly received. Thereafter you choose your dressing – things like EVOO, balsamic / lemon / red wine / white wine / dill / pesto vinaigrette, sun-dried tomato, oriental, thai / thai sweet chilli, chilli lime, mint yoghurt, horseradish and the usual avocado, blue cheese, Caesar, ranch, thousand island, French and Italian are available. I am hardly ever adventurous and usually stick with thousand island or thai sweet chilli, but my boss has had mint yoghurt, and that turned out pretty ok for him. Their salads portions are rather big – regardless of the rabbit / zebra / elephant size, and so I must say if youre at salad shop trying to lose weight – yes you do get a healthier meal but youre eating a very large portion of food! So what I would do is get the elephant and save half for later. The staff is happy to pack whatever you cant finish for takeaway. Drinks-wise, their old-fashioned lemonade is also very good – not too sour, although slightly on the sweet side. Ive also had their liquid brekkie, which comprises of milk, yoghurt, granola (and banana I think) and if I were a smaller eater I would be very happy to have the liquid brekkie every morning. Their crushes (mixed fruit juices with ice) are generally decent, but if you ask me nothing spectacular. There’s also a free flow of bread to go with your soup or salad. They used to provide butter on request but this is no longer the policy. So you have to eat your bread plain, or with olive oil. There was however, one day where they served complimentary sundried tomato foccacia in the bread basket – and this was excellent. (no need for butter as well). I like the set up – everything’s white (I think) but for the cement floor. While it takes them some time to process your order at the cashier, they bring your salad /soup to you once ready and are also happy to serve water. But it does get quite noisy at lunch, so may be difficult to maintain a conversation, especially if youre seated at their long communal table in front of the cashier. I think ive had a better experience and salad at salad shop than other places like salad stop or juiced, and I will certainly be back.
