| A buddy, indeed.
I haven't been writing reviews for pretty long (all thanks to work and what-nots), but I decided it's time to write a long overdued review for one of my favourite chill-out places - Buddy Hoagies.
Buddy Hoagies is located in a rather cosy corner of Yishun, or more appropriately Khatib Central. As such, non-Yishun-ers/Khatib-ers are unlikely to end up at the cafe unless of course, they have read reviews, or are brought there by someone who is in the know.
Anyway, for the benefit of those who have no idea where Buddy Hoagies is, it is say, a 5-minute walk from Khatib MRT station. From the mrt station, cross the overhead bridge and keep walking straight until you see a playground right at the end. On the right of the playground, you should see the Nee Soon South Community Centre. And viola, Buddy Hoagies is just a couple of steps ahead.
So you made it to the cafe, what's next? FOOD, of course!
The food prices are very affordable, with pastas and western delights eg grilled chicken, fish & chips, etc, costing less than $10. And trust me, we are definitely paying less than what the food is worth! As some of the reviewers have mentioned, add just $4.50, and you will get (1) soup (a choice of mushroom or minestrone soup) and garlic bread, (2) coffee/tea/iced tea; and (3) a scoop of ice cream (you can choose the flavour).
Bear with me, I just have to rave about a couple of food items!
Firstly, the garlic bread. I have no idea how BH makes garlic bread that yummy! The bread is so soft and moist, well-toasted, with fine-chopped garlic evenly spreaded. To many people, garlic bread is just, well, garlic bread. Nothing to rave about. But for me, having a delicious piece of garlic bread, is just the perfect way to enjoy the equally delectable soup.
Next up, the baked potato. As raved about by a fellow reviewer (April Hoon), the potato is oh-so-good! Some restaurants serve hard potatoes that are probably baked for only a minute or two, but BH's baked potatoes are different! One can expect the potatoes to be well-baked, soft and served with just the right amount of butter. And the best thing I like about the potatoes, the skin doesn't stick to the flesh! If you don't have the habit of eating whole baked potatoes, you can always ask for a serving of golden fries instead.
Last but not least, I'm absolutely in love with the rum & raisin ice cream. I don't like it when the rum taste is overwhelming eg Haagen-Dazs', or when the raisin is too hard eg King's/Wall's. But please note that the ice cream is not home-made, it is from Cremo.
(On a side note, anyone knows where I can buy Cremo ice cream tubs? Else I will have to rely on BH for my regular fix of rum & raisin ice cream!)
Service-wise, pretty alright. I have no issue with the service so far. It tends to get crowded at night so just be a little more patient. Good food is worth waiting for. :) Oh and do help yourself to the plain water at the side counter.
If you are looking for affordable and delicious food, and a quiet ambience, Buddy Hoagies is definitely THE place to go!
