| biscuit crumbs!
The 2 words that make up the title of this review are the magic words which enticed me to check out Hong Mei Western Delight. From what I heard, the pork and chicken cutlets sold here are coated with biscuit crumbs instead of the more commonly used breadcrumbs. As such, the outer layer of the cutlets are especially crispy. The idea of 'extra crispy' cutlets made my eyes light up immediately (i love crispy and crunchy stuff! :D ), and i decided I absolutely had to try the cutlets!
I ordered the chicken cutlet + pork cutlet combination ($5.50) while my companion ordered the combination of fish & chips + chicken cutlet ($5.50). Each came with BBQ sauce (served in a separate bowl), fries, baked beans and (non-toasted) bread with butter.
The cutlets did not disappoint. They were indeed very crispy, thanks to the lovely golden-brown coating of deep-fried biscuit crumbs. I enjoyed the crumbs so much that even though I didn't eat the chicken skin, I scraped the crumbs off the skin so that I could eat more of those! Beyond the coating, the pork and chicken (thigh) were commendable as well. Both were flavourful, succulent and tender (unlike some awful pork cutlets in certain western food stalls which are dry and tough). However, my companion's fish was less impressive as its batter was too soft.
I didn't eat my fries, but they were probably decent, judging from the fact that my companion devoured my serving as well as her own. The bread was soft, slightly sweet and tasted pleasant, but I didn't finish it because I found the thick, wet layer of butter unappetising (but that's just a personal preference, because I don't like eating butter on its own). The BBQ sauce, though not particularly outstanding, was still palatable and went well with the cutlets, adding some sweetness to the savoury chicken and pork.
Overall, this is a good place for a quick (the speed of service was acceptable), affordable, yummy and rather filling meal. All these deep-fried stuff are quite unhealthy, but since the food is nice, you wouldn't be wasting precious calories eating them! ;) |

ice on Fish & Co (The Glass House): fishes don't take NETS! Isn't there an option to order from the ala carte menu? I should think it's possible.
