| Great quality, yet cheaper than hawker fare
I came here courtesy of a food-tasting session by HGW. So impressed was I by the value-for-money food that I went back a second time! In future I would definitely come back here for my dose of Singaporean food. I think this place beats many places hands-down, in terms of taste and sheer affordability.
It's All About Taste works on a simple premise- that customers should have a taste of everything. Hence, local food dishes can be served in tapas sizes, and for SGD15++, you get a pick of 3 dishes. However, the so-called tapas sizes are really quite substantial, and I guarantee that, unless you have a really above-average appetite, you would feel quite stuffed by the end of the meal. What's more amazing about this place is the special promotions that it has- first of all, there's a UOB 1-for-1 promotion, whereby if you use the credit card, two people pay for 1 person's share. Before GST and service charge, that works out to about SGD 7.50 per person, for THREE dishes. Now how unbeatable is that?! Definitely cheaper than food courts and most hawker stalls! I can't get 3 dishes for $7.50.
To top it all, it's so much better value for money given that there's air-con (yes I know like many Singaporeans I have a weakness for this- call me spoilt but I would much rather eat in comfort than sit in the great outdoors and sweat it out, especially when you tell me the price here is the same as at food courts, etc) and good service! And, the restaurant decor is nice and quite modern. From the road, the restaurant didn't look like much, but once I stepped into the hotel, I was quite impressed by the marbling, the large screens, etc and I felt that this place reminded me somewhat of The Line at Shangri-la, in terms of ambience.
By the way, there's also this insane 1 dollar deal promotion- if you dress up in red, and say "Hungrygowhere", you get the 3 dishes for $1! I was quite bowled over when I heard about that, but I think I won't make use of that promo...maybe it's because I'm not that young anymore and don't feel thick-skinned enough to do that, hehe. ;)
Just based on the price point alone, this place is definitely a winner.
How about quality? I'd say better than lots of hawker stalls. How do I know? After the HGW food-tasting session, I decided to go rogue. I came back again, just to see how I'd be treated as an anonymous face-in-the crowd. One of my orders was Mee Goreng, which was very good, and it came with three huge prawns and lots of fishcake. I also ordered the wok-fried beef, and there was lots and lots of beef. My dad ordered the beef kway teow and was very impressed- he was served a full, steaming hot bowl and he said it was delicious. One can just tell that hawker stalls would probably not be able to offer food of the same quality- they don't have the economies of scale lah, how to give so many prawns, etc...econs 101.
Other items that were tasty, in my opinion, were the 1) Popiah 2) Bak kut teh 3) chilli crab 4) cheng tng 5) tau suan. Seems like the cook is equally adept at local desserts. The char kway teow was nice, but I think other hawker centres also do a good job of that. Chicken rice was pretty decent though not exceptional. Mum said the same of the satay. Oh, and yes I mentioned this earlier but I must say it again- the MEE GORENG and the beef kway teow! And the carrot cake!! Those are good.
Service on the two occasions I went was very good. Staff were obliging and very eager to please.
On both occasions, I topped off my meal with chocolate-laced mocha, feeling well-satisfied. Ostensibly this place is great for bringing your tourist friends, who want to try a bit of everything, but hey, I think it's great for me too, a true-blue Singaporean who wants her staple nasi lemak, mee goreng and what-have-you every once in a while. :) I hope you'll agree with me.
