Great Hokkien Mee...

29th NOV 2008

After a taste of Thye Hong Hokkien Mee at the HGW's Big Eat Out event last week (at the Peranakan museum), I decided to go down to the main stall at Newton to have another go at it... soon!!

So yesterday, we went down to Newton with mom, to have a taste of Thye Hong’s Hokkien Mee on location. It was actually not hard to find our target stall, but what’s irritating is the rather aggressive hard-selling from waiter/waitresses of a few other Zi Char stalls.

Anyway, the stall offers Fried Hokkien Mee ($4/$6/$10), Fried Kway Teow ($4/$6/$10), Fried Oyster/Oyster Omelette ($5/$7/$10), Satay ($5 for 10 pieces/$9 for 18 pieces/$15 for 30 pieces), and something known as Crystal XO Sauce ($5/$8/$10). Of these, they also offer Set Meal A ($12) and Set Meal B ($20). From what I understand, Set Meal A allows you to choose small serving of any 3 items, whilst Set Meal B: any of the 5 items.

As we were not particularly hungry, I ordered Fried Hokkien Mee and Fried Kway Teow (both medium size) for the 3 of us to share.

It actually took awhile before we got our food. Their business is just too good! Plates after plates, and packets after packets of Hokkien Mee were constantly being dispatched!!

Soon, our orders came.

Char Kway Teow (Rating: 5.75/10)
Now.. I won’t say much about their Char Kway Teow, since they are known more for their Hokkien Mee and not CKT. Anyway, their CKT was the dry type, and it was a tad too dry for my liking. But at least for $6 bucks, the size served was acceptable with enough of the mini-cockles and prawns.

Fried Hokkien Mee (Rating: 8.75/10)
The Fried Hokkien Mee… Hmmm… Nice… actually… EXCELLENT! I think it qualify as one of the best I have tried so far. For $6, the size served was good with at least 5 prawns and many slices of cuttlefish. Also, Wifey isn’t really a Hokkien Mee person, and initially, I thought her reaction to Thye Hong’s Hokkien Mee last week (on the 22nd NOV) was a one off thing… but once again, Thye Hong’s Hokkien Mee won her over. How different is this Hokkien Mee to the next? Is it the use of the fresh prawn stock? Is it the chilli used? Is there a difference in frying technique? I don’t know... but I am just glad wifey gets to enjoy something I liked since young.

Will I come back again? For sure! However, I'd stick to the Fried Hokkien Mee and maybe give their Crystal XO Sauce thingy a shot...
