Fantastic food, and service with a smile!

I am a bit hesitant when writing this entry. You know when it comes to finding a good place to eat, you tend to pen it down, chuck it aside and keep it for your own future reference. This is exactly what I felt when I found this place 2 months ago.

Tucked along Niels Road (near the exit of Craig Road), I chanced upon this rather new restaurant when I was around the area looking for some nice wholesome food. And I was not disappointed.

This restaurant left me with a good impression that I had to bring my Kiwi and Taiwanese friends to try them out.

First and foremost, food. The food served here is extremely fresh and wonderful. Now I do not know about most of you guys, but one of the sides I loved to order is calamari. Locally, most of the calamari served are quite chewy or hard as they are frozen and then thawed in microwave and deep fried with batter immediately, but not in Soul Cravings. As I heard from the kind lady who suggested and serve us the great food (have to say nice nice as she might be reading this) , they usually order the squids fresh in the morning, take the pains to clean them and prepare them for dinner, and serve them only for lunch or dinner. Result : you get soft and fresh calamari, freshly deep-fried. In addition, one of the sides you can order out of this is the calamari casserole. The sauce is so fantastic (a tangy and spicy sauce wonderful for dips too), I requested the lady if it is possible to stir in pasta the next time I visit, which she kindly accepted.

The beef served here is very well prepared too. I had a steak the other time, which was very nicely done, and served with a buttery home-made potato mash. Other beef dishes also include the beef goulash, which was fantastically stewed to perfection. If only they can add some cream on top, it would have enhance the flavour.

Next on the list, pasta. Most of the pasta that I had tasted are a tad bit soft. At this restaurant, however, the pasta they served is excellent. Firm and great with a crunch, is what most Italian restaurants would be serving. I was told that the chef (kudos to him) had worked previously in some Italian restaurants before and acquired the great skills. And what surprises me, is the innovation of the types of pasta served. I loved their teriyaki pasta, which was, overall not too salty and well balanced. And you can tell that the chicken was well-marinated too.

Service wise was excellent. The water was constantly topped up and plates cleared efficiently. Turnaround time for each order was prompt and swift.

Price wise : you will be glad that you are able to get good food at reasonable charges. You might even treat yourself to a home-made cheesecake after seeing the bill!

Should have taken some photos of the food before gorging them!!!

on Ryoriya Sangokushi: Taiwanese meets Japanese
This place is over-rated and over-priced. If you want good authentic Japanese food, stay away from Ryoriya Sangokushi. For the portion and price, you are better off dining at a 100% Japanese owned diner. Curry rice cost SGD18 and I bet my maid can cook better Japanese curry using pre-mix from the supermarket. The service at this establishment is a complete joke with the entire restaurant staffed by PRCs who can hardly converse or understand English. Service attitude is also horrible and non-existence by any Japanese restaurant standards. The waitresses were rude and loud. You will be forgiven if you think you landed in some restaurant in China. I been there once with my Japanese colleagues and we vowed never to go back.

Wow! $5 corkage charge for BYO is definitely the most reasonable I've heard of!
