try it!

Everytime I passed by smok'inn frogz kitchen, it seemed almost surreal... It's populated by people who seem to have no cares in the world - just chillin' with their friends, soaking in the relaxed atmosphere.

Having said that, being inside the 'restaurant/coffeeshop/premises', it actually just feels like a coffeeshop. heh. I suppose, a feel somewhat like Botak Jones.

I must say that while everyone comes here to try out the famous beef burger, I am more captivated by its seemingly more boring counterpart - the chicken burger.

I have tried the beef burger on my first visit (i mean, it IS customary right?) and i found it to be above average - not bad but not oh-my-gosh-its-so-good inducing. It has a nice beefy taste, not too dry, lovely buttered bun that is lightly toasted.

But the chicken burger on the other hand, it really impressed me. the chicken pieces are juicy and succulent with a lovely sweet thai sauce (if i'm not wrong) coating each piece! and they are really quite generous with the meat. it also comes with the nicely toasted bun =) the fries are quite outstanding too! AND it is value for money in my opinion.

and so now everytime I pass by smok'inn frogz kitchen, i dream about eating a chicken burger. mmm...

heaven

This was honestly the best meal I have ever eaten! I didn't have high hopes for this place due to the lack of reviews but wow! it totally blew my mind away.

The restaurant is located on the narrow street of keong saik that feels almost a bit too squeezy. Inside, it is a small cosy restaurant with a nice window of the chefs buzzing around, whipping up dishes of heaven.

The thing that sets Nicolas apart is their SAUCES! they are so flavoursome and delivers a punch of goodness in every mouthful. it really beats all the other restaurants smack down! i enjoyed every single dish of the degustation menu which is very rare.

for the main course, the lamb rack was done to perfection - pink and juicy. the mashed potatoes came flavoured with truffle oil too! yum.

really. do NOT give this a miss. it is worth every cent.

wonderful start in the morning

I dropped by here purely by chance! (ok maybe I DID somehow manipulate my mom into choosing this cafe for breakfast) Having said that, this review is probably for those early risers because I got here around 10am when hardly any stores were open in paragon and there was barely a hint of any life on those upper floors.
save for the glorious smell of freshly brewed coffee and the heady smell of a good breakfast wafting down from PS Cafe.

It was like a little island of relaxation in the midst of the shopping mall. I loved everything about it. The old-school way of writing the menu on a black wall with white chalk; the way your feet made a cracking noise on the dark wooden plank flooring; the cushiony chairs; and the single stalk of baby's breath in a small glass jar in a beautiful understated elegance.

We ordered a breakfast melt (ham, cheese, bread, wilted spinach) but now that I think back, I think they gave us a turkey sandwich instead. But nevertheless, it was heavenly!

It was a stack of gooey cheese melted atop turkey ham snips, resting on fluffy yet toasted and buttered slices of caraway bread, which were nestled around some delicious wilted spinach that would make popeye proud. (anything to make you feel healthy in the morning!) OH! and there was a perfectly poached egg lying on top of the whole thing... yummy...

It was just the atmosphere that made me feel like I was transported to australia or america and enjoying a quiet, laidback start to the day. =) needless to say, I'll be back!

great service

I visited the prime society about 2 weeks back and I walked away very impressed with the service there. and of course the food.

The ambience is very enchanting - the high ceilings, wide chairs and wooden tables give off a somewhat laidback feel. I especially love their paper placemats which were pictures of different animals like a pig, fish, cow etc with the parts labelled. Instead of labelling these parts as sirloin, tenderloin etc with a boring narrative following each heading, they provide witty lines with subtle references to certain celebrities - so subtle that one might miss a few. A very entertaining read while you're waiting for your food to come! Plus they ensure that each placemat on the table differs so that you don't get a repeat of the same animal.

We ordered a seafood platter as a starter ($50 - quite pricey in my opinion) but it wasn't the most generous of platters that I've seen. Well, it was probably quality over quantity. I didn't eat much of it due to my allergies and so I'm not the most qualified to pass judgment on this dish. However, the lobster did come a bit mushy according to my friend, though we weren't sure whether it was actually meant to be like that. So we checked with the waitress who speedily brought us another lobster for replacement.

For the mains, we had a house salad that came with strips of sirloin steak, 2 filet mignons and 1 ribs. Each main came with a serving of seasonal vegetables and steak cut fries. and oh-my-goodness the fries are in a class of their own. crispy and flavourful with a mushy inside, they retained their crunch even towards the end of the meal. And before I forget, the wait staff were very helpful as we actually had the intention to change the fries to baked potato but only decided to do so at the last minute (ie. around the time that the mains were about to be served). When we informed the wait staff, they were very patient about it and said they'd see if the fries had been cooked and see if they could help us change the order. Alas, just at that moment, our mains appeared and we were resigned to an unhealthy side. But having excellent service staff, they still asked politely and helpfully if we would like the baked potatoes to which we answered a resounding yes! (and the baked potatoes arrived very quickly too.)

The food was delicious - the meat very flavourful and tender and really impressed me. I thought it was much better than other pricier establishments where the beef is tough and totally over-rated. However, one of the filet mignons was ordered as medium but came a bit too rare. Not being picky, my friend still ate it happily (it was delicious) but it just got more and more rare towards the middle (actually.. duhh.) so he left it untouched and stuck the little stick that said 'medium' on the rare piece of beef. So at the end of the meal, we called a waiter over (yet again! >.<) and informed them of the mistake and just told him to take the meat to the chef and tell him that the meat was lovely but just not cooked to the right doneness! Again, the polite waiter happily obliged and cleared our plates. So the cynic in me who thought that he would actually just dump all our plates into the dish stack without showing the undercooked beef to the chef, tracked him with my eyes as he traversed the huge hall. to my surprise, he actually DID show it to the chef. ah well.. what can I say...
great service indeed!

yums

I just had a fantastic lunch at shima today! We took the buffet lunch priced at $39.90 per person and I would say it was totally worth the buck AND the calories. (heh)

The buffet lunch came with:
appetisers: miso soup, tempura (shishamo & prawn), california handroll, salmon sashimi
teppanyaki: beef, oysters, prawns, salmon, garlic rice, vegetables, chicken
dessert: watermelon & coffee/tea

The sashimi was very fresh - wonderfully coral pink and offered minimal resistance in the mouth - one of the best I've had. Best thing is: you can order as much as you want! =)

As for the teppanyaki - many thumbs up! i absolutely loved the salmon. Most establishments cook the life out of the salmon but not shima! The sauce was heavenly and it was cooked to perfection - still retaining a bit of sashimi texture in the middle... needless to say, I dutifully ordered more of the salmon.

Not to be outdone was the prawns that had a little bit of bite to them and also delightfully flavoured with garlic and somehow it made it more delicious to see the butterflied prawns turn pink on the grill!

The beef used was definitely of high quality and it was very flavoursome and again, had that great melt-in-your-mouth texture that I always look for in my beef. I am almost salivating just thinking of it.

The chicken was also yummylicious: crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, with a sticky, caramelised teriyaki sauce. simply delicious.

I must commend the service staff too as they were very attentive! of course, this might be due to the fact that we arrived at 1.45pm when most of the lunch crowd had already dispersed and their last order is at 2.15pm (so do visit them earlier to enjoy more teppanyaki goodness!) But maybe it was because it was relatively empty that I enjoyed the whole experience more: the food was served speedily since the chef only had to cook for the 2 of us and also, we got to have a nice chat with the chef. He even happily stayed back and took further orders for the teppanyaki items at 2.15pm on the dot.

All in all, the review can be summed up in one word: fantastic!

I'm a convert

So me and my friend were clueless as to where to eat dinner on a Saturday night and we decided to wander down the streets of Holland V. Now I wanted to try monster mash cafe but he was so stoked about eating North Indian cuisine that I couldnt possibly quench that fire.
As a background, I do not have a penchant for spicy food. In fact, I have somewhat of a phobia! yes, i can hardly endure a peppercorn without dousing myself in ice-cold water. so the prospects of the meal ahead seemed bleak.

I was obviously inexperienced in ordering any cuisine associated with heat, so he took over the ordering. we ordered
1. 2 plain naans
2. 1 garlic naan
3. roganjosh (?) a lamb curry
4. chicken masala
5. a vegetable dish

and here is where i must commend them. chicken masala wasn't on the menu but they were very willing to cook the dish up for us. PLUS, after my friend emphasised that we wanted non-spicy dishes, the kitchen actually cut back on the heat (though it was still spicy for me). but kudos to them! the roganjosh and chicken masala were excellent - the meat was flavourful and oh-so-tender, and we couldn't help but mop up the delicious curry (esp the roganjosh) with the warm, fluffy freshly baked naans, despite our bursting stomachs, (and my burning tongue). And even though the dishes looked small, it certainly fed us well - we couldnt finish up the vegetables (i'm usually the veggie-eater but it was too spicy for me) - this despite 2 hungry tummys.

As for service, while the waiters seemed a tad bit reserved, they must have spotted the classical warning signs of an inexperienced spice eater and faithfully ensured that my glass of ice-water never ran empty (even though the previous fill-up was about 1 minute ago). I was impressed by the friendliness of one of the service staff there as we struck up a conversation with her when she came over to ask how everything was. That's when we found out that everything was true authentic north indian - from the furnishings, decorations, chef and even all the service staff. PLUS the establishment has been around in holland V for 15 years. [goodness! but i can see why.]

all in all, thumbs up from this convert!
