| Everything With Class Except the Fish
I enjoy Thai food served in Singapore, which generally is closer to the Thai Chinese version. So when faced with a proposal to dine at Sabai I could not decline the offer. Once we entered, the darken ambience and large space between tables made it clear that it was a fine dining environment. .
We started with the chicken wings which were had a nice crispy but yet not too oily skin with its meat remaining tender. Next I tried the Morning Glory (Kang Kong) which was very authentically spicy.
I then tried the Red Duck Curry which was thick and flavourful, intense with lots of coconut milk and not recommended for those weak at the heart. The duck pieces were a little overdone but still not too hard to consume.
The only disappointment was the Steamed Seabass which was not very fresh.
Service staff were generally Thai and was at tip top condition. |

| Tung Lok Quality Without Paying the Price
I must admit that I was a little skeptical when I heard that Tung Lok was trying to reach out to the masses. I mean, this is Tung Lok we are referring to, where everything served is done in tip top fine dining condition and whereby senior management have been known to literally visit the fish markets to pick up the fish.
Well, after finding out that they opened a branch near where I work, I decided to try this place out for dinner and so I visited the place yesterday.
The ambience is a very nice white and bright setting with low-rise booths which allowed for private conversations. I decided to start with some appetisers and first on my list was the Drunken Chicken, which consisted of six pieces of chicken leg that was soaked in a wine sauce. Served chilled, it was a pleasant way of opening the palate although it was a tad hard.
Next on the menu was the Crabmeat Corn Soup, which essentially was corn soup with lots of starch and very little crabmeat. Nothing much to shout about here.
I then tried the eggplant with minced pork. I liked how they used a younger sturdier and more crunchy eggplant. The one comment I have is that it was a little too sweet instead of the usual spicier version.
I also tried the Tofu with Spinach in which the top of the tofu had a layer of dried spinach. The tofu was generally silky and tasted nice. The soya sauce that accompanied the dish made it homely.
Finally I tried the Beef Brisket Noodles. To my surprise, they used handmade noodles instead of the usual "mee kia". I suspected that quite a lot of the water that was used to cook the handmade noodles got poured over to the plate, hence diluting the sauce. The beef brisket was also a tad hard to eat.
For dessert I tried the Hashima Jelly which tasted very sweet. It's suppose to be good for the face but I have not seen any results yet.
In general, the way I would summarise this place is your grandmother's cooking in a more posh environment. What I liked about the place is that they served small portions which allowed me to try many dishes and the prices charged were very reasonable. Service was efficient. Many of the service staff looked like grandmothers too but they were pretty quick on their feet and did an admirable job of trying to upsell the dishes. |

| Better As A Drink Place
I have been here twice, once pretty late to have a couple of drinks and once to have dinner. Until my recent dining experience, I did not know that Barfly served restaurant quality food.
So here we were, a bunch of hungry-people celebrating Macadamia Naddz's birthday. Appetisers to share included onion rings and fries, typical bar food that is nothing much to shout about.
For my main course I tried the Beef Cheek. This is the third beef cheek I recall having in Singapore and I enjoyed it. The beef was soft and melted in my mouth.
I also managed to "steal" a juicy scallop off my friend's plate and that too was wonderful as the huge scallop had a nice bouncy and juicy feel to it that I could not bare to end this short but tasty experience by consuming the scallop.
Drinks were "one-for-one" so it made it made house pours very affordable. Now comes my little gripe. As the night progressed, the house music started getting louder and louder during intervals of an estimated fifteen minutes and it was not easy for the ears to handle. I never realised this in my first experience here because I came in when the music was loud and was ready for a party, but being a diner this music change gave me a totally different experience since my ears were accustomed to the soft music before the sudden outburst when it was time to end the meal and start the partying. The move in the change of music was a little too sudden for my liking.
The other thing that I did not like was that my long legs could not adjust to the short-legged chairs, making me feel a little uncomfortable at times. Service was efficient but tended to be a little intrusive.
In conclusion, while the food is good, I would still dine at a different place before coming here for drinks. |

| Sets Offer Good Value
It is shocking to see how crowded Ang Mo Kio Hub can be, even on a Monday afternoon. Just check out the queues at NTUC and you will know what I mean. Alright, back to Ichiban Sushi, I was looking for a quick place to eat around Ang Mo Kio and decided after seeing the service staff zipping around in lightning speed that this would probably be ideal for me.
I started out with the Agadeshi Tofu which was much larger in real life than what the picture showed. Unfortunately it was rather tasteless, even with the accompanying sauces and after a few bites I could not eat any more of it.
The next appetiser was the California Roll, which was served in four large round pieces. Once again, I found this dish lacking in taste. A simple way to solve this problem would proabably be to add more mayonaise.
My final appetiser is something I must try at every sushi chain, the Negitoro (Tuna belly with onion) Sushi but once again there seemed to be lacking in taste.
Just when all hope was lost, my main course, a set which comprised of tempura, a salmon don and curry udon. The tempura was alright although the prawns may not have been very fresh with it being a little soggy. I enjoyed the curry udon, although some may feel that the udon is a little on the chewy side. However, my favourite still lies in the salmon don. Although the salmon was not of top grade quality, the idea of mixing it with chilli padi helped to spice up the meal, although I had to remove quite a chunk of the chilli since it was too spicy for my more westernised palate. In general however, small portions this set allows one to try a bit of everything - something that I enjoy.
In summary, the title of the review speaks for itself, and I must say that overall I was satifised with the quality (even though it was certainly not gourmet standard) given the price point. Service was very efficient. |

| The Malaysian Food Fair
I had the opportunity to try the recent Malaysian Food Festival at The Square. The Square regularly comes up with themed buffets and has a very informal setting - creating an environment for people to try all sorts of cuisines while having a slow evening of chatter.
For the Malaysian Food Fair, they served the usual bunch of International cuisine such as the Sashimi (fresh and good), Roasted Lamb (a little dry) and Chicken Karaage that would suit hotel guests who are not interested in Malaysian food, but I was there to try their Malaysian delights and hence decided to zoom in on the core delights.
I started out with the duck which is my favourite bird to consume. The duck was tasty marinated in several spices but it tends to be a tad too dry. Next on my taste list was the Beef Bergedil which had a very nice blend of mashed potatoes with chopped beef - probably my favourite dish of the night. The Beef slices was a little heavy but it is clear that a lot of work went into marinating the meat. Finally, I enjoyed the White Fungus Soup which was excellent in washing down all that curries.
One would find that Malaysian food tends to be on the tougher side, so if you have weak teeth, you'll just have to stick to the International options on the table.
On a concluding note, it's still not too late to try as the festival will last till this weekend (6 July 08). And while you are there, do not forget to try their house martini - a nice cocktail to conclude a hard day of work! |

| It's Alright
I have passed by this place many times when going to my favourite instant noodle Hong Kong cafe nearby but have always been meaning to give this place a shot. Finally, the opportunity came when a friend from Chiang Mai wanted me to recommend a place so I figured this would be a great chance to test out this restaurant.
The setting is a nice and simple layout with sufficient space between diners. I wanted to go for the buffet which would probably have been more cost efficient but my fellow taster decided that there was not much exciting on the buffet and so we ordered some food that is apparently rather popular in Chiang Mai.
We started out with the squid salad. It was too sour for my liking but my friend seemed to enjoy it. Next up was the beef salad in which the beef was tenderised. Another sour dish which I chose to indulge minimally.
I did enjoy the Tom Yam Talay (Seafood Tom Yam) as it was not too spicy and Mince Chicken to be rather unique in that it was rather chewy and somewhat fatty as well.
And so what did my Chiang Mai food "kaki" say at the end of the meal? "Its not bad, quite alright" was the verdict. I take that as the food being authentic. |

| As Fine Dining Turkish As It Gets
Over the last few years, there has been a stable of Turkish restaurants that have emerged, mostly in a simple setting that offers a good value for money, and many made popular by the "disappearing ice cream" act that never fails to put a smile on even the most expectant audience. However, only a few could every qualify as date places and Cappadocia at Hotel Rendezvous branch certainly qualifies as one.
I decided to go with the set menu, which gave me one starter of bread with dip, a kebab as a main course, a dessert and a tea. All this for about $29++. I was hungry so I figured that this should not be a problem for me to handle.
The dining experience started out on a negative note when I realised the "bread with dip" appetiser was actually humus with bread. Not realising this, my partner ordered a separate plate for us to share and so we ended up with one large portion and one "set-dinner" portion on the table which was too much for us to handle. I was disappointed that the waitress did not inform us that we were ordering an appetiser that would have been provided in the set meal I ordered. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the humus, which brought back some memories as it was a staple for me during my college days.
For my main course I had the Chicken Kebab which was a little dry but otherwise tasty. The fried rice that accompanined the kebab though was excellent and I wished I had a tad more to go with my chicken.
The winner of the dinner was the Tiramisu, which was refreshing as it was neither too wet nor dry. It was served slightly chilled, the right temperature for the dessert to compliment the otherwise heavy meal.
Overall, I did enjoy the experience and when I do have a craving for Turkish food I certainly know where to find one! |

| Can't Lose Option
After lunch at Liang Court, I was looking around and realised that there was an offer that would make a non-dessert loving person like me excited. For $4, one can get a waffle with a choice of ice cream and coffee. At some places one would not even be able to get a coffee at that price!
Down to the taste, the waffles was done fresh and hence was nice and warm with the burnt batter smell. The cookies and cream ice cream was ordinary but the coffee had a nice aroma. It is not the best stuff I have tried, but it is more than acceptable and at this price point one really cannot complain. |

| It's Still Instant Powder Here
I have been on a Japanese Curry hunt for the last few months and I was told that this was the place to try. Located in the Liang Court basement in the Mediya Market that caters to a largely Japanese crowd. I thus came with rather high expectations and was looking for something authentic.
I ordered the Beef Curry Set. Unfortunately, I was utterly disappointed when I tasted it and found that it tasted like what my roommate used to cook during my college days off an instant powder packet. Moreover, the beef brisket used is of a poor quality and I had a difficult time chewing the meat. For the price point that we paid this was certainly not worth it.
I also tried a bit of the Chicken Cutlet Curry and although the curry was not of quality, they do the chicken cutlet well. That's probably the only saving grace in my meal here. |

| Too Late? There's Always Burger King
It's after ten o'clock, and places in Novena have already closed down, leaving very little options for one to have a proper dinner.
Enter Burger King, where one can go to have a quick dinner bite. My favorite here has to be the Rendang Double, although after awhile the kick is not the same as what it used to be when I first tried it. The one burger that does not disappoint though would be the Double Whopper. Fills me up quickly and is satisfying.
I'm not much of a Burger King fan, but if I have no choice, I have no second thoughts eating here. |
