| Re-heated food, Swimming in sauce
I like cheesecake so I decided to try out this place. Unfortunately, I decided to try out their main courses as well and was quite disappointed in the quality. Well I didn't expect much in the first place but at least I expected the food to be palatable.
The mushroom soup was ok-not fantastic, but serviceable. It came in a small, plain bowl. Never was I to know that the food took a downturn after that.
My dining companion ordered pork ribs in coffee sauce, and the ribs were positively drenched in the sauce, which was too overpowering for our taste. It was quite a turn-off. This is a common fault in Singapore restaurants, they completely overdo the sauce. I know that Singaporeans generally like food which has strong flavour, but a little more subtlety wouldn't hurt.
I ordered Chicken Cordon Bleu, and the chicken-apart from being drenched in sauce as well-was very hard. I had a bit of trouble chewing it and felt like giving up a few times. The side of macaroni and cheese was intriguing, to put it nicely. The reason for this was that it was a bit spicy, and I have never tasted macaroni and cheese which was spicy before. I would prefer my food to have its original taste, thank you very much. I know Singaporeans like spicy food, but I think it's an absolute crime to just indiscriminately add spiciness to food that's not supposed to be spicy.
Apart from that, the macaroni and cheese also had a very distinct "frozen TV dinner" taste, i.e. it tasted like they went to the frozen food section of the supermarket, bought one of those ready-made dinners in a box, heated it up in the microwave and served it to us. In fact, both our main courses tasted like that. No wonder the food was served to us so fast. If I wanted re-heated food, I could have just got it from the supermarket downstairs and heat it up at home.
Since cheesecake is supposedly their specialty, I was hoping it would be better. I ordered a lychee cheesecake, and it was, well, ok I suppose. Not spectacularly bad. It was a bit small for $6+, and the cake was a bit rich, and a bit bland.
Since they refilled our ice water quite regularly, I'm fine with the service.
Afterwards, we passed by Bakerzin downstairs and decided to buy a cheesecake there since they were having a half price promotion. Sorry to say this, but my dining companion said that the cheesecake at Bakerzin was much better, and I agreed. What's more Bakerzin was having a half price promotion, so their cheesecake is more worth it too.
Sorry Say Cheeze, you guys need a bit more work to improve on your food.
