No need for second thoughts

How far Food For Thought has come from its original outlet along North Bridge Road...back then it was a small, quaint cafe that was also a social cooperative. Freshly made sandwiches and soups with no preservatives, a rare and famed red velvet cake and no service charge was how it differentiated itself.

This new Food For Thought realises the potential that this socially-responsible initiative had from the start. Housed at 8Q SAM, the contemporary art sister museum to the Singapore Art Museum, Food For Thought is a bright, clean, airy space that hints of Bill's and Jones in Sydney.

More importantly, Food For Thought offers that much lacking all-day breakfast and fills nicely the brunch void in this island's gastronomic offerings.

Breakfast is served here from 9am to 5.30pm and ranges from their very own granola to a range of eggs, condiments and pancakes.

Choosing the customise option, I had the scrambled eggs with cream, roasted tomato salad, and garlic mushrooms. The scrambled eggs were rich and smooth, perfectly cooked such that they remained creamy and soft. The accompanying roasted tomato salad provided a nice piquant balance to the eggs albeit a bit watery, while the sauteed button mushrooms were moist, juicy and generously coated with garlic and rosemary.

I also had the chance to pinch some thyme has brown from my brunch companion's plate and immediately regretted not ordering that as a side. These were no ordinary hashbrowns. Instead, they were pomme noisettes - small round balls of fried potato, crispy and crunchy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. Very addictive.

As it was bordering on lunch, we also tried their chunky fries with chilli powder. These thick cut spuds came piping hot and were reminiscent of the chaps you typically find in a British or Irish pub. Light and non-greasy, these are one of the better chips around; just tell them to be heavier with the powder if you want more flavour.

For dessert, we tried the apple and blueberry crumble. Just cooked apple chunks were interspersed with melting blueberries and topped with a crunchy, buttery crumble topping and scoop of vanilla ice-cream and a cream/caramel-like sauce. A tad sweet but homey and comforting.

The new Food For Thought is like an old friend - familiar, relaxed, and the place to go for some home-style comfort.

I know reviews have been mixed but it was definitely good on the night I went. With a bottle of wine, 2 starters, 4 mains and 3 desserts, it was only $70 per head including tax!
