Hi,
I think the Italians meant their pasta/soup/risotto as the Primo (1st course) which precedes the Secondo (2nd course) ~ the meat/fish course. This prob explains why the pasta is a small portion.

you may want to try the pasta from wild olives (a stall in changi airport terminal 2 staff canteen). it's cheap (price of a plate of pasta with mushrooms in cream sauce is $2.90) and delicious! and the pasta is not overcooked so it's not too soft =)
