| A bit too much
We tried Supperclub at Odeon Towers on one of its first few days post launch. The owners have attempted to bring the concept of a dinner/lounge/drinks place on white beds to Singapore. Needless to say, there are hardly any seats, just a long row of beds on two levels and a cavarnous space (formerly ModLiving) in between.
The place dresses up for style but lacks a lot of substance. The idea is you have a "surprise dinner" there which costs about S$100+ per person consisting of a five course meal based on whatever the chef wants to serve. The food was mediocre at best with starters consisting of chopped raw tuna salad, then a second course of some kind of soup in a beer glass, and then lamb skewers as a main with some cous cous. The food was so mediocre that we had to go have bak kut teh afterwards to help our taste buds come back.
The big catch here is that they only serve diners altogether irrespective of what time you came. So for those who came early, they had to wait until about 9 something for the first course. Being impatient, and having to wait one hour as a result for my first course, we were needless to say on our nerves already when we got the tuna. And all the time they have waitresses coming by for drinks orders.
Then during the second or third course they had a new age singer come in to do a set that was so off tune (or maybe it was supposed to be like that and I can't appreciate it) or perhaps too new age, that we were looking forward to finishing our meal quickly. That combined with the drag queen walking around was a bit too much for our tastes, but there are people into this kind of thing.
Overall its too expensive for what you get. The long drawn out dinner, the singing and the gaudy colours make it too artificial an evening. But it sure made that Bak Kut Teh experience that followed taste and feel absolutely fantastic. |

| A lot of potential
SM took me here for a little dinner for two on Saturday night. We love the Wessex Estate area and like other reviewers here hope that it does not turn into another Dempsey where we used to frequent but have stopped going to in the past year for obvious reasons.
They make good appetizers here and I thoroughly enjoyed by rare tuna salad. The caesar was also done well. The mains show good potential although need a bit more work as my penne pasta had a bit too much of a local chili sauce taste and SM's scallop pizza had a bit too much cheese (although there are some people who would not complain too much about this).
Ambience was very nice, especially for those sitting outdoors. The whole area takes you away from the world for a short while at least.
BTW, if you pay by Amex its 20% off so an added bonus we found out when we got the bill |

Tried this for the first time last weekend as Long Beach next door was again full and we showed up with no reservations. Place is huge and amazingly full! Families and lot of Koreans which was a good sign.
There quality of meats was very good I must say. And the vegetable dishes, free steamed egg, and the thousands of small dishes that accompany a Korean mean that they gave for free certainly made the cost of the meat dishes seem much more palatable.
Service is primarily by foreign born Chinese but were quite well trained compared to many other places. It has a bustling and convivial atmosphere so a good place for a small group dinner. A pleasant find. Although I don't know why Long Beach did not try and secure the rent on the space when the bowling alley moved out! |

I think a lot of people are unanimous on this one. Klee is a breath of fresh air in the crowded Singapore drinks space. Its off beat location, fabulous interior, superb original drinks, and sitting only policy will keep this place packed (seated that is) for a while to come.
Klee makes drinks with love and passion. Probably the only place I know of in Singapore which falls into this category. They use really fresh fruits and blend them with top of the line alcohols. So you won't see Smirnofs for Vodkas, but rather belvedere.
Service is chic and efficient. Staff obviuously love working there. And being set in Wessex Estate keeps you away from a lot of tourists so thats a positive as well! |

| One of my favourites
A long standing favourite of mine since the days when it used to be at Lyndhurst Terrace and called Plats. Then you got a very private kitchen style restaurant and a great four course french meal for HK$278. That was a steal with a great environment to match with no corkage.
The new incarnation as of two years ago is Bonheur which stays true to most of the above although prices have gone up by about HK$100 (I guess they had to as what they were serving was a really good meal). The place got more sophisticated with a more modern interior and the number of tables went up, but it still retains a degree of cosiness befitting a private dining kitchen.
The food and value is what makes this place stand out. You order from about 8 appetizers, to be followed by a soup, and then a choice of one of about 4 mains, and then one of about 6 desserts. The favourites for most are the foie gras to start, the lamb chops for the main, and the chocolate fondant or apple tart for dessert.
More and more people have discovered this place over the years, but it still retains its charm despite being a little bit more commercialized. |

| A tucked away find
You would probably only go to Kandegawa because it was referred by someone. Its location, on the third floor of Hotel Royal, makes it a relative unknown. The hotel itself is quite a spectacle by itself on Newton Road. Its recent refurbishment probably pulled it into the 1980s. But it has a long standing clientele of overseas visitors and locals who go to the various establishments inside.
Kandagawa has turned into a bit of an evening hangout for my guy friends and myself. We especially like to come here for its cooked dishes which are a little different from your usual Japanese restaurant. Its also a nice place for after work sake. It has a steady stream of regulars who must have known this place for many years as otherwise you would completely miss it due to its location.
We particular enjoy the bitter gourd with egg, spinach salad with bacon, grilled kampachi kama, mentaiko spaghetti, and stewed pork. In terms of raw stuff, we usually get whatever they bring in thats fresh which is posted on the boards. Remember though, that this is not a sashimi restaurant but more a cooked food place with sashimi available.
One other very good point about this place - its prices are very reasonable for the type of food you get. We usually stuff ourselves for about S$60 per person. This is a far cry from a lot of the other establishments in town and keeps us coming back for its unique ambience, solid cooked foods and sake. |

| Worth the wait
After a year of driving by and wondering what this place was, we finally got round to trying this (the other option that night was to try Da Paolo's takeover food).
It was crowded when we arrived but we were still a bit surprised when the head waiter told us that they can't take anymore orders for the time being as the kitchen was closed for 15 minutes. An interesting policy as being a small restaurant, they apparently they need to gauge how much of each type of dishes they have left before they take more orders!
While we debated whether to stay or leave, 5 minutes went by, and thus we decided it was probably better to just wait. We were not disappointed. My salad with chicken livers was excellent with the livers plump and juicy and not the least bit overcooked, the most common problem with this dish. The ravioli with shrimp and foie gras had excellent skin and a nice creamy sauce. And our spaghetti with cepes was generous and well done although possibly a tad bit more salt would have been better.
Some of the reviews below noted that portions were small, but we found them normal to generous. And considering the prices are about 40-50% cheaper than an equivalent restaurant was definitely worth it.
The only consideration here is the decor, with plastic table cloths which have been previously used and the inner and outdoor corridor of Serene Centre as your dining room. That said, that is part of the relaxed charm of this place. They are also building a timber deck outside which should enhance the ambience of the place.
Overall, it was a very pleasant evening and despite our initial 5 minute grumblings about waiting, was certainly worth it. |

| Very good and very good value
We really enjoyed Herbs and Spices for the delicious Indian food it serves as well as the really competitive prices. Its located in the Upper Thomson Road belt of restaurants and shops. Parking can be a bit troublesome but with enough perseverance you will find something, if in a back residential lane somewhere.
The food is fresh and fragrant. The meats were all succulent. The dahls and my favourite palak paneer were done well. And the breads were really nicely cooked with a little crispness in them.
As I said, prices are less than half of what you would pay for similar food in the more established Indian restaurants. We will definitely be back. |

| Beautiful place and food
We really enjoyed Braise which we tried for lunch several weeks back. It is set in one of the old monorail stations on Sentosa, but has been totally converted to an oasis of modernism, wood and glass with delectable air conditioning which protects from the absolutely baking heat on the outside.
We had the set lunch which for about 30 bucks was extremely good value. The chef is from Ember at Hotel 1929 and the dishes are very well prepared and presented. My main consisting of a beautifully prepared piece of pork with a crispy skin is still something I can taste.
Its location means however that business is on the slower side as few people can afford to make the trek out there. But I would say it is absolutely worth it for 1) that slow day at work, 2) a nice lunchtime or dinner date; 3) that day at work when you are really pissed off with your clients or your colleagues and need to "get away" for a while; and 4) just a really good meal in a sublime environment. Weekend brunches would be good to, but I don't believe their 30 buck set is available for such (although I do look forward to be corrected on that one). |

| Not bad
A relative large group of about 10 of us tried Big Fish recently, also on recommendations. It was nice to see a western style fish place open up in Singapore to go along with the many local seafood restaurants around.
The good included the fact that they use quite fresh seafood, and had imported little neck clams for appetizers as well as for use in the vongole which was nice as not many places have clams of this quality. People who had the fish liked it. Of the four vongoles we ordered however, three looked like vongole and one looked like clams with pasta and pesto sauce! Don't know how come one ended up looking and tasting so different from the other three. Must be the non pasta chef asking to "try" to make one of the vongoles!
I don't think they were prepared to cater to such a large group however. The wait staff was not attentive to different people arriving at different times and hence did not appear again with glasses of water or wine glasses for the new arriveees.
Another gripe I have - they should not charge for the bread when you order extras. It is just poor form for a restaurant to have to charge for bread when they can build all this into the price, or should already be considered in the 10% service charge (even though this is for service). This is the first time I have seen a Singapore restaurant charge for bread and I have to say this is poor form.
Alas prices are also not that cheap with a meal per person coming out to 40-50 bucks which for the decor and location is relatively on the high side. I would say if they bring prices down 20% they put themselves in the price range where families and groups of friends could come more frequently. I guess importing those littlenecks must have a price! |

Management Response: 23 Sep 2008
Thank you for your feedback. We would like to give our assurance that dishes cooked are according to our standard recipe.
We serve all our customers with a complimentary first serving of our home-made foccacio bread. However, due to the mounting hike in prices of most ingredients, we were left with no choice but to charge a nominal price ($1.50) for a whole loaf (approx. 8 slices) for a second serving.
The average check of our main course is $20/- and we do not charge GST. Please access our website:www.bigfish3.com for more details on our menu and pricing.
