| Simple, heartwarming fare
Had been there twice already, the most recent being yesterday.
Their sandwiches are unpretentious and really yummy. I loved my foccacia with Mama's spicy pork - it was made of Sam Zam Bah which is fatty pork belly but oh so tasty!
Service was commendable because although the kitchen was closed (no more fresh salads and soups available) at our pathetic looks and pleading (we haven't had lunch yet and it's three!) the chef agreed to make us sandwiches if we were ok with not having veg on the side.
In the end, the food came with some sauteed cukes and brinjal (?) on the side to make up for the veg. We were grateful! Loved the sincere accommodating service.
Their cakes were great too - as i remembered from the last time I visited. It was a chocolate something that was so good we got seconds. |

| Review of ala carte buffet
We had the ala carte buffet there recently and were really excited cos had heard so much about this place and the glowing reviews of high quality chinese food.
however, i suppose this might not totally apply to the ala carte buffet. should have expected it. buffet food is never the prime cuts or the best species anyway.
There were 6 of us, so I would say big groups are best at getting a large variety of samplings. We tried all the appetisers, and the Pork Belly was good, and I really loved the soft shell crabs drenched in pork floss. the clams had a strong smell though, and we didn't enjoy it. the salad prawns on fruits were predictable but at least fresh.
The most disappointing dish of the night was the 1.Braised Superior Shark’s Fin with Seafood. The shark's fin tasted like plastic and had a funny smell. so we didn't finish it. the manager did say after the meal that if we had surfaced this earlier he would have cooked a fresh pot for us. but by that time we were already stuffed having reached the end of the meal.
Other highlights that we did enjoy were the Steamed Sea Bass with Coriander Leaves, but it was cooked peranakan style with chili and lady's fingers and tomatos with rich dark gravy. The Deep-fried Soon Hock in Soya Sauce was a tiny tiny fish for so many of us, but it was fresh and tasted good.
Other things we tried included :
Deep-fried Scallop in Japanese Sauce - tempura but a little heavy. some brinjal tempura as well.
Peking Duck - quite normal, a tad disappointing.
Steamed Cod Fish with Chilli Chips - very tasty and flavourful and a large portion.
Stir-fried Crabs in Salted Egg Yolk and Potato - crabs were not the large sri lankan kind, but the salted egg taste was quite interesting.
Deep-fried Pork Ribs with Golden Garlic - sweet cos coated with honey but a little tough and in large chunks.
Crab Meat & Sweet Corn Soup - only one of us had it, but it was so good he ordered a second bowl
Crispy Prawns with Oats Cereal - nothing out of the ordinary
Crispy Chicken Chop in Mango Sauce - very good
Stir-fried Venison with Black Bean Sauce - tasty but average
Seasonal Vegetable & Diced Garlic - xiao bai cai came with only half! the green top leaves were presumably cut off to serve in some other ala carte atas dish.
Stir-fried Vegetable with XO Sauce - some brocolli and snap peas.
Seasonal Fruit Platter - rock melon was over-ripe. watermelon was very sweet though.
Lemon-Grass Ice-Cream - very very yummy dessert. not too pungent and very palate cleansing.
Service was stellar though. At the end, what particularly impressed us was that they laid out wet towels individually, and opened the packets for us! very considerate considering that we had eaten crab and prawns with our hands, and our fingers might have been too oily to easily open the packets. |

| Great service super quality fresh food
was very impressed with the service at Tatsu Sushi.
I am preggers, and went with two friends. Took a while with my sushi and tempura bento, and decided to leave some sushi on my plate cos was told that preggies shouldn't eat too much sushi (although the other preggie with me was having lots of sashimi and sushi and assured me that so long as it's fresh, no worries - the concern is with bacteria on raw food).
The attentive waitress noticed, and asked if I would like the chef to grill the sushi slightly. Very nice gesture! so i had slightly browned sashimi on top of the rice, and promptly finished them all without guilt.
plates were also promptly cleared, and tea constantly refilled. they also agreed to change my friend's udon that came with the set to edamame beans yum.
the set lunches are good value for money too, given the quality of food. |

| Most yummy comfort food
Went there on mother's day. Loved the fact that they took my reservation and didn't make us choose between one of the 'two sittings' like some other restaurants.
Ordered the fried fish (very good), the babi ponteh (gravy was the best of the night's offerings), ayam buah keluah (served in their nut shells meaty and fragrant), chap chye (large portion, tasty), fish otah (spicy and shiok) sambal sotong was large in portion (too much sotong for us to finish really)and we had the itek tim (Duck soup) that was as good as i had remembered from an earlier takeaway experience. The ngor hiang was interesting, not the normal hokkien type, but I really dug it cos it had such hearty fillings. Not too good for the complexion though since it was deep fried till crispy.
We had chendol at the end of it all too (how can one not at a peranakan restaurant)? My dad enjoyed the place so much i think he cleaned out their name card deck so he could recommend the place to his friends. :)
Although they don't take credit cards nor nets, the fact that they don't charge GST nor service charge and the dishes were already reasonably priced more than makes up for it. |

| Quite chi-chi
My favourite was the starter of morsels of Peking duck, foie gras and wasabi prawn on a little column of watermelon. The foie gras was worth every bit of cholesterol it was packed with.
We wondered about whether to get the set dinner, but decided to go ala carte instead.
Overall, the food was not disappointing. A tad more pricey than usual, but an enjoyable experience. There were 2 long tables of customers having a celebration - someone's birthday? corporate function? so it was rather noisy. And it was hard to get the waitresses' attention, but we still managed to enjoy ourselves. |

After hearing so much about this legendary place, we decided to make a month-ahead booking for our parents' wedding anniversary.
True to expectation, the food was spectacular, but so was the price.
A tad disappointed that they charged $3 each for chinese tea for all 6 of us even though 2 of us had mainly cold tap water.
The large fresh sweet japanese tomatoes drenched with sauce that had a hint of wasabi was refreshing. The fois gras on top of a tiny bed of chinese noodles was my favourite. The five spiced duck was a family member's favourite. And the dessert of liquored ice cream was a lovely surprise too. The portions were not large, but we were adequately filled at the end of the 6 course meal.
As usual, the staff bothered to explain each dish, and answer our questions. The ambience was great that day since our table had the whole restaurant to ourselves. Loved the flowers and the decor. |

| Homely place
The first thing that struck me about this place was that it was rather out of the way. Unless you happen to live in Sixth Ave, which makes it right in your neighbourhood.
Tucked in a row of shophouses opposite some terrace houses, it is not the first place you would think of going for Italian.
But it serves good Italian nosh, albeit in girl sized portions (read: some boys would still be hungry). my oxtail ragout rigatoni was very tasty.
Ambience was good - nicely spaced out tables, and the woodstove (?) behind the counter was interestingly reflected into the mirrors.
The desserts were a tad expensive - my friend paid about $10 for a scoop of gelato the last time she went! I had the warm chocolate cake which was a tad too sweet for me, but at least it came with a tiny but nice scoop of ice cream.
only grouse was that they forgot to give us a bread basket! And we were there so early, like around 6:30pm on a Sat. The crowd only started coming in when we started leaving around 7:45pm... |

| Quality Jap food at amazing prices
Loved this place the last time I went. Unpretentious, simple place with good service and fantastic food.
My friend had the chirashi sushi set which was humongous, and I had rice with salmon and roe scattered liberally over it. And it was so affordable for the portions and the quality - super fresh fish.
And there were a sizeable number of Japanese when i went, which is always a mark of a good Japanese restaurant.
It's a rather small restaurant and the tables are quite near each other so you might be able to hear the conversations at the other tables, or feel disturbed. but if you're there just for the food and less for the ambience, then this is the place for you!
Will definitely go back again to this tucked away gem. |

| Great indian buffet
Went there with three other friends and were pleasantly surprised.
Wide array of 5 meat dishes and 8 (?) vegetable dishes, not including the salad bar (chick peas and yoghurt beansprouts were good). Loved the fried ladyfingers, thinly sliced. And the mutton rogan josh was so tender and tasty and not too strongly spiced.
the fish tikka was also very fresh and I had to go for seconds. A generous basket of garlic naan (nice and warm) was served to our table.
Indian desserts are usually too sweet for me, so I gave that a miss and concentrated on fruits instead.
Service was pleasant, staff were attentive without being obtrusive. They politely recommended the buffet when we were still trying to decide between ala carte and buffet. |
