Warning: If you get a balding guy as your server, prepare to tip more or be shuuuuunnnned.

Was there on a Sunday evening for dinner with 5 friends. The overall standards of the food and ambience of the restaurant was good. However the service was less than satisfactory.

I have had lunch here before, but this was the first time for dinner. The queue was relatively long and I had to wait for an hour to get a table. The manager was polite and tried to get us a table asap. However there was a group of 9 people who came later but were given a table before us. The excuse given was that there was a designated table for reservations.

Once I got a table an hour later, the food came quickly enough. However the bottomless Tostada chips I ordered was anything but bottomless!! When I asked for a refill of the chips after the first serving, I was told by the server that there were no more chips available. I felt cheated as they should have informed me when I was placing my order.

Halfway through the meal I tried to get a refill for my Bottomless drink. The waiter I asked for the refill snappily informed me that he was not our designated server and walked away. Which was slightly understandable except our server was nowhere to be found. And instead of just snapping at us, he should have helped us look for our server or informed him that we needed a refill.

But the cherry on top of the icing was when I was told to pay the bill halfway through my meal as the server (balding Malay guy in his twenties) said that his shift was ending. It didn't take a genius to figure out by the way he was acting that he was expecting a tip. The meal cost 123 dollars and I paid 150. I left a 2 dollars plus tip on top of the service charge as I did not appreciate having my meal interrupted and was disgusted by how obvious he was being about expecting me to leave a tip.

I was seated near the cashier so I had a clear view of him as he returned to it. He took the tip and threw it into a box and slammed it close, mumbling something to his colleague as he did so, causing her to look over at our table. So don't tell me that I was being overly sensitive when I said he was expecting us to give him a tip. It was incredibly rude of him to do that in full view of any customer who happens to just glance over at the cashier.

I know this is an American chain restaurant, but this is Singapore. Unlike in the US, there is a 10% service charge included in the bill, customers should not feel any obligation to tip on top of that. Even in Europe, locals don't tip on top of the service charge included unless the service was exceptional and the 'service' I received on this occasion was anything but.

Overall, I like this restaurant because of the good food and big portions but the rude servers definitely put a damper on my experience. I recommend this restaurant for people who enjoy being judged on how much they tip.

STAY AWAY FROM THE BREAKFAST MENU

I used to think fondly of Carl’s Jr, I mean, how good is the beef chili fries?! Now when I think of Carl’s Jr, stuff like ‘puke inducing’ and ‘CHEATERS!’ come to mind.

Once, I ordered a Oreo Mint Milk Shake (not sure of the actual name) with my beef chili fries. The thing cost more than the fries itself! A drink costing more than the food, I thought I had walked into Starbucks by mistake or something. And guess what, it tasted awful. It was as if I had dipped my straw into a tub of cream. It didn’t even seem liquid at all.

Naively deciding to give them a second chance, I wandered in there again one fine morning after seeing a postcard with an ad for their breakfast. On the ad, the pancakes are seen as a stack of maybe 5 or 6, and advertised as “Home-made light, fluffy hot cakes served with a packet of warm maple syrup.” The price was $7 so I figured what I’d be served would be similar to the one in the picture but nooooooo, what I got was a pathetic 3 pale yellow pancakes. And ‘warm maple syrup’? Even the ‘hot’ cakes were barely warm! WHAT A JOKE.

It looked like the ones they served in McDonalds. The operative word here being ‘looked.’ It was without a doubt the WORST hot cakes I’ve ever had the misfortune of tasting. Even the ones my mum makes at home with supermarket bought pancake mix tastes better than this crap. Not only was it quite tasteless, it was not ‘light’ and ‘fluffy’ in any way. In fact, I almost broke the dumb plastic fork trying to cut it up. And my sister who had just got her braces and couldn’t eat anything too hard was unable to eat them at all.

The more I thought of it, the more it didn’t make sense that these 3 slabs of stones cost me $7! So I looked at the menu again and now noticed that it said bacon / sausages under the hot cakes. I went to check with the cashier, thinking they might have missed that out or something, turns out you have to pay an extra 50cents for that, which I thought was quite all right, so I asked if I could add that as a side now.

The cashier refused, saying that breakfast hours were now over. You’d think they would have mentioned you could add that to your hot cakes when you were ordering.

I don’t know about the other breakfast items, I only tried the ‘hot’ cakes. MAYBE they aren’t as inedible as the hot cakes, but I’m not going to try them, you are not getting another cent from me, Carls Jr. You and I are done.

Great Breakfasts

Lunch / dinner at this place is not really worth mentioning but the breakfast is definitely worth getting your ass out of bed early on a typical, lazy weekend for.

I usually order the waffle set, which comes with cofee/tea, eggs (served sunny side up, scramble, etc, choice is yours), sausages, bacon, and of course the waffle. Maple syrup comes in a tiny plastic container at the side of the plate, which is a little inadequate as the waffle is pretty big. But I suppose they don’t want their customers dying from a heart attack from consuming all that cholesterol so early in the morning.

And if all that wasn’t enough for you, there’s always the free flow bread! I would not recommend looking at the counter where the customers are free to cut out as much of the whole baguette as they so require into the bread baskets provided. I once made that mistake and saw a woman rubbing her hands together profusely after cutting up the bread and a whole lot of um, tiny particles of, I don’t even want to know what, fell onto the rest of the bread on the counter.

I didn’t touch the bread again after witnessing that. On second thought, maybe you should keep a look out of the counter, cut down the risks of food poisoning.

Still, the breakfast is superb. It's $8, slightly more expensive than that of most fast food chains, but the serving is infinitely more generous and it definitely tastes better, too.

Staff in desperate need of training

Food here is good, I quite enjoy the banana pizza with cinnamon ice cream. The cakes are good, some are little too sweet for my liking. A good one is the Fraisier, the pistachio butter cream is to die for.

Although the service (or lack there of) is disgusting and negates any positive thing about the food. After my bad experience, I’ll never eat at Bakerzin again, or maybe I’ll just boycott the Paragon branch.

There were quite a few people there the day I went, I had to wait about 20 minutes to get a table, which was fine with me, what wasn’t cool was how there seemed to be only one person who was doing any work. While standing in line, there were some customers who were done with their meals and had left, the tables were slowly cleared by the staff and although it was now ready to seat new people, there was nobody to show the customers to the seats. Were we supposed to just go grab any table we wanted by ourselves?

People were left to stand in line like morons while there were perfectly good tables available. After a good 10 minutes, the one person who seemed to be doing any work at all came over apologizing profusely for the wait and started doing his job. What pissed me off was how during all this, the rest of the staff were standing around idly or wandering around aimlessly. It’s like they hoped no one would make eye contact and asked for anything.

This isn’t even the worse of it, when I finally got a table, I was snubbed by the waitress who alternated between completely ignoring me and rudely demanded that I ‘Wait’ (wow giving one word orders, what am I, a dog?), in favor of giving her full attention to a table of Caucasians. I only point this out because I noticed I wasn’t the only one with the problem.

When it was time to settle the bill, I had a hard time getting someone to bring my bill to me as well. Was tempted to just walk off, but hey I’m not a complete imbecile, unlike some of the people working there.

I'd recommend this place to people on a diet, after experiencing the service, you'll be so full of anger you won't be able to stomach the food!

BEST DIM SUM IN SG

This is my currently my favourite place to have Sunday brunch. If you’ve watched movies at Shaw Lido theaters before, you’ve probably seen the ad running before the main feature. You know, the one where this one guy goes ‘Mmmm, excellent!’ and then he and his family happily hop down the stairs after the meal.

It’s almost always crowded, another sign of how popular it is, so remember to make reservations before going. If you don’t you may have to wait for about 20 minutes for a table, and you have to stand under the hot lights in the low ceiling while waiting.

The service is good, efficient, orders are served promptly. After sitting down, they’ll ask what tea you want and then leave the pot at your table. You can refill your own cup but the like I said, the service is efficient, so they come around and fill it for you quite regularly. The staff carry big trays of assorted dim sums and walk around the tables, stopping at each one to ask if you want anything off their tray. The dim sum is also usually quite hot, another plus.

The dim sum has got to be one of the best in Singapore, eating here always makes me so happy. The food is just mouth watering. Nearly everything is fantastic. So far, I’ve yet to try something I did not like in this place.

Highlights include the har kau (the prawn is is kinda crunchy and super fresh), the egg tarts (these babies just melt in your mouth), the mango prawn (anything to do with prawns here is EXCELLENT, it’s just so fresh), the deep fired yam dumpling (not sure what the name is, but damn it’s good. A little oily, but not as bad as what most other restaurant serve, and it’s deep fried, what did you expect?), deep fried man tou (served with peanut butter and condensed milk, yum!), chee cheong fun (the one with char siew is best), spring rolls (nice and crunchy) and the mango pudding (the staff kept recommending this to me and I was reluctant to try it as it seemed kinda expensive for a pudding and I don’t even really like mango pudding, but I caved one day and tried it, now I order it nearly every time!).

There are lots more, but I don’t wanna ramble anymore. This review is long enough as it is. For the quality of the service and food and the location, I’d say that the prices are very reasonable.

Never again

Heard a lot of good things about the Popeye’s at Changi but was too lazy to go all the way to the airport just to eat some chicken, decided to just go to the one at the Flyer, boy did I regret my decision.

First sign that it was a poor decision, I wanted to have lunch there, so I went in the middle of a hot afternoon, not having a car, I took the MRT to City Hall and walked from there, almost died from the heat in the process. The location is pretty out of the way.

Upon reaching the place, I was happy to see that the interior of the place was quite nice for a fast food chain but that feeling quickly vanished when I went to place my order. The staff looked like they wanted to kill themselves. I know this is a fast food place and not to expect anything from the service, but would it kill them to at least smile?

Ordered a 8 piece chicken, staff didn’t bother if I wanted Spicy or Mild, just assumed that I wanted Spicy, just great. Seeing the half dead expression on his face, I couldn’t summon the energy to ask for Mild either. It was my first time there and I had wanted to try a little of everything.

On the food, it was all right, nothing to write home about. I thought even KFC was better. It was quite tasteless to me, I can only imagine how the Mild tastes like. The biscuit was very dry and quite disgusting to me. Fries was also only average.

Great place for lunch and a chat...

One of the reasons I wanted to write this review is because I disagree with the previous reviewer who only gave it a score of 4.5. Nothing against them, I just want to give my opinion so people don’t automatically dismiss this place because of the low average score.

I think this restaurant deserves a better score, at least a pass. Staff may not be the most polite or speak the best English, the service is still a lot better than most of the restaurants in Singapore these days.

I can’t really remember the exact names of the dishes but nearly everything they recommend in the menu is pretty good. The last time I went, they had a promotional item, sake soaked clams, that was excellent. 250 grams for about $14, if I recall correctly.

Some of my favourite things to have while I’m there, potatoes with cheese, curry rice with cheese, fried egg with cabbage and mayo. The desserts are the real stars of the show. The green tea /macha ones are especially good.

Another thing I like about the place is it’s quiet, I don’t usually have to wait to get a table, and can have a conversation without having to shout to be heard over the voices of the other customers.

For $25, you can get a good meal with a nice, big serving of dessert, which is pretty much the highlight. So don’t forget to leave room for dessert.

For the quality, quantity and location (it’s quite spacious, and it’s Takashimaya, hello?), I’d say the price is reasonable. It’s $25, so don’t expect to find it on par with Dozo or whatever posh restaurant.
