| Try the branch opposite Mustafa
Agree with the reviews below that the flagship branch of Race Course Rd can get overcrowded, with a corresponding dip in the quality of service.
We've eaten several times at the other branch on Syed Alwi Rd opposite Mustafa and, even on a weekend, it wasn't as busy and the service was much quicker and friendlier.
You can't fault the food either. I love Chettinad cuisine and this place does it the best of anywhere in Singapore. Favourites are the mutton uppu kari (dry and spicy, with the fennel, clove and cinnamon flavours perfectly balanced and not overwhelmed by chilli) and the chicken nattu koli masala, which leaves you bathed in chilli heaven; mouth on fire, head popping, endorphins surging...wonderful. |

| Great beer, good food, terrible service
What a shame. I really admire the passion of the guy who set this place up - his beers are fantastic, the place has been beautifully designed, the food is pretty good, the service.....well.
After sitting down (my wife, daughter and my dad) it took 5 minutes to get a menu and 15 minutes (5 sitting patiently, 5 fidgeting around trying to catch someone's eye, 5 waving frantically like someone drowning in the sea) to place a drinks order.
The place was very busy, but nevertheless it took nearly 30 minutes to get two of the four drinks, and even then only because we managed to get the waiter over and threatened to leave immediately. He then took another 10 minutes to bring the other two drinks, claiming they were "changing the barrel".
"But my daughter wants a Sprite and she's been sitting here nearly an hour, are you changing the Sprite barrel too?" my wife asked.
The food (when it arrived) was good, but we were all so angry by then it didn't matter. Any enjoyment we would have experienced had melted away a long time before.
You have to ask the question: why spend so much money setting a place up, then give no attention to the skills of the people staffing it? It's false economy. |

| The worst service in Singapore
We went there in the early evening in a group of five and sat at the bar. Despite it being nearly empty, the staff behind the bar evidently decided we were undesirable (sorry for not driving up in a BMW or a Merc, love), because they tried so hard to ignore us it was almost funny. Or perhaps there was too much static coming through their trendy headsets.
Finally ordered drinks, sat down at a table - then the waitress brought us a plate of asparagus. Before we could point out that we didn't order it, she turned (having delivered a nasty look) and disappeared.
The plate sat there for 20 minutes untouched (in the meantime we had been trying unsuccessfully to order more drinks) - finally we got so irritated we decided to start eating it. 10 minutes later the same waitress came and said "did you order that?" We said no, then she picked it up and started walking over to another table of people (who had obviously been waiting more than 30 minutes for their asparagus, which was stone cold). We shouted after her and said "we've been eating that, are you going to give it to them?"
Another bitchy look, and she turned and went back to the kitchen.
Thoroughly p****d off with this place, we managed to order the bill. When it came, there was the plate of asparagus on it. Another 15 minutes of arguing, then the asparagus was removed and a new bill arrived, this time with the Happy Hour drink prices removed and replaced with full prices. Another 10 minutes......
You've heard the expression "all fur coat and no knickers" ? It describes something or someone that's all show and no substance. That, I'm afraid, is Oosh - the worst restaurant I've been to in Singapore. |
