Bad Food, Price Increase

We went back to Tapas Wine Bistro with high hopes since our previous experiences were good. We found that the set dinner menu has gone up in price to $29.90. We had 3 set dinners and sampled the following dishes.

1. Tomato Soup - Good as always. Could have been warmer.
2. Fried White Bait with Mayonnaise - Good. Tasty.
3. Soft-Shell Crab - The mantou that came with the dish was oozing with oil. The previous time I tried it, the mantou was crisp but not soaked in oil. From the taste of the mantou, we could tell that the oil has not been changed for some time, as there was alot of other flavors in the oily bread.
4. Spanish Meatball - BAD. Worst meatball we've ever tasted. It was cold and tasted of flour. We sent it back.
5. Fried Calamari - The fried batter tasted of stale oil even though it was flavored batter.
6. Ribeye Steak - We ordered 2 steaks medium rare and they came cooked to medium doneness. Side vegetables were generously portioned and included roasted sliced zucchini, carrot, potato, cherry tomato and long bean. Unfortunately, the side vegetables were too salty and the long bean did not have its hard ends removed. The vegetables were also of uneven doneness, as some long bean were not cooked through. The plate was garnished with grey, wilted sprigs of thyme which was very unappetizing. No garnish would have been better.
7. Pan-fried Dory - Tastes rather plain, could have been seasoned with rosemary or something. Oily.
8. Chocolate Ice cream - Dessert that came with the set dinner was ice cream. I tried the chocolate one, it tasted artificial. Would have expected better quality chocolate ice cream from a restaurant.

Service was splotchy as many of the waiters seem new and uncertain. We were presented with the third new menu only after we have made our dinner selections. The first waiter who served us was not able to articulate what the mains of the day was and had to check back for every small query. Eventually we were served by a young lady who was more informed about the restaurant's menu and policies. Our food took a long time to arrive even though it was early and the restaurant was empty. At the end of our arduous meal, the restaurant was kind enough to give us a 10% discount due to the overdone steaks. However, with the increase in set dinner prices and drastic drop in food quality, the entire experience was a waste of time and money.

Management Response: 30 Jul 2008 Dear Pao,

Thank you for your review.

It is unfortunate that you did you enjoy your last dining experience with us and I am not writing this to defend Tapas Wine Bistro in any way but rather just to express my sincere appologies and to clarify certain points.

The reason why we raised the price of our set menu was two fold. The first is due to the recent excessive rise in our food costs. The second, and main reason is because we wanted to to offer a larger variety of meat and seafood for the
main course. Thus, we raised it by $4 from $25.90 to $29.90. At this price, we still believe we offer a good value in allowing our customers to have a soup/salad, a tapas, a main course and a dessert.

We are very conscientious on the quality of our food and in the spirit of always trying to improve I have taken your feedback to my Head Chef. On the use of the oil, I have confirmed with my Head Chef that the oil is not recycled.

Retaining good service is always a challenge in Singapore but that is certainly no reason for the unsatisfactory service you received. I take your comments seriously and will continously train my new staff to be better familiarised with the menu. We have just changed our menu about a few days ago and I will
ensure that my staff are fully up-to-date.

Once again before I sign-off, thank you for your honest feedback and I really do hope you will give us another chance.

Yours Sincerely,
Kenneth

on Food For Thought: Cute place, Amateurish food
honestly i feel rather upset when i see the comments that you have made. I do respect your personal opinions, though i think that the food and service at Food for Thought have been by far one of the most sincere and homely eateries around. Don't expect too much out of a cafe. Most importantly, its the ambience and companionship that matters a lot in a dining setting. Perhaps you just had the wrong dining partner at that time. Sorry to hear that you had such a hard time. Better luck with your plate of msg laden grub next time. Cheers, Sihan

They do have an oyster bar. (With people prying open the shells at the bar.) =) I haven't tried their oyster though.
