| Why did people say it's good?
We felt like having Indian food, and Hubby heard this place was one of the best in town, so we made a reservation and went there.
We were one of the early diners at 6.30pm. The valet service was friendly, but the two staff waiting at the entry had such long faces that I wondered if they just had their pay halved by their boss two minutes ago. No a single trace of smile and no "Good Evening" or any greetings at all. (Yes, I am a sucker for service!)
We were brought to our table. There was only one other table occupied at the other side of the room. There were two staff standing around and chatting near the table we were brought to, and again, they would rather chat among themselves and ignored us totally.
Menu was brought to us, and we ordered. The price was high compared to other Indian restaurants we been to, but we knew about that before we came, so was not that surprised. We ordered their famous grilled prawn appetiser - which was pretty good really, but was easily $10+ per pc of prawn... (there were only 2pcs per serving) I ordered a fresh watermelon juice which never came for the whole evening. I tried to remind the staff, but gave up since I failed to attract anyone to look my direction twice. Service through out the evening was at best 4 out of 10. There were only one friendly guy, the one who brought us some complimentary dish from the chef. The rest were really not commendable in their somewhat can't-be-bothered-with-you attitude.
Later into the evening, there were more guests and I noticed the service to the non-Asian guests were somehow warmer. I wonder if there was color lense at play or just that the staff in the restaurant require more time to warm up to their work in the evenings.
Food was seriously just ok. Other than the prawn, the other 2 dishes were not something I would rave about. The portion was very generous though.
Hubby said a lot of people commented the decor was fabulous. But we both found the place no big deal. To me, it felt like some living/dining room from some middle class families from US suburbs but perhpas slightly bigger. The place doesn't have anything distinct to it or any Indian flavours at all; they could change the menu to Italian, Chinese or Thai food and the decor would still fit. Just need to change the crew.
The whole dinner (1 appetiser, 2 dishes, 1 portion of naan, and 1 portion of basmati rice, 1 glass of wine) came up to about $180 after GST and service charges. Pretty pricy I would say, and for this amount, I really expected the service to be better. At least the staff should smile a lot more. I don't think we would ever go back again. |
