| decent queue
Was there on a Thursday night at around 8.20pm, not too long a queue. Managed to get a table before 9pm.
We ordered Akamaru with tamago, Karakamen with chashu, Kyushu Miso Tonkotsu, salad, one pot of green tea ($4++), shrimp bun, cherry blossom ice-cream and yuzu sherbet.
Green tea comes in a pot (good for 4 cups) and non-refillable. Kyushu Miso ramen seemed to be the largest bowl, followed by Akamaru and finally Karakamen. Personally, I prefer the Akamaru broth as it is flavorful yet not too heavy as compared to the seasonal Kyushu Miso Tonkotsu ramen.
Cherry blossom ice-cream takes a second bite to get used to, but its milky taste leaves a sweet afternote on the tongue. Yuzu sherbet was refreshing and fruity. Both desserts were $5++ each.
The restaurant was noisy and conversation across the table was almost impossible unless you raise your voice. Interesting to observe other people since we're sitting just next to strangers.
Service staff are always polite and when as you walk away to leave the restaurant, you'll hear loud resounding thanks, more than once.

| new place in town
It felt warm in the shop... but that's probably due to the lightings. It's ceiling is adorned by colorful paper umbrellas. The shop is relatively new and according to their staff, it barely opened 2 weeks ago. Very few customers in the restaurant on a Monday night.
The conveyor belt is situated inside the restaurant, and we spied that most customers sat there. The prices here are on high side, and the sushi rice is smallish. The sushi plates are priced from $1.99++ onwards. There's a current promotion where hamachi sushi goes for that price instead of its usual $2.99++. There's tuna from Indonesia (cheaper) and Japan. We utilized the coupon from 313 coupon booklet and got the salmon sashimi (3 slices) for free.
There were minor glitches as the staff has yet to familiarize with the running of the restaurant. Drinks not delivered in full, and items that has arrived were not marked off. Minor stuffs. However, our tea was constantly refilled and plates cleared quickly. So that was good.
We ordered sushis like tamago, hamachi, salmon and unagi, california handroll and saba shioyaki. Expect conveyor belt quality sushis. The handroll, was almost mini.

| Sat night dinner
We were at the viccinity and decided to dine at Waraku. The menu is decidedly limited as compared to the Waraku at Marina Square.
For food, we ordered miso ramen, hokkai salad and katsu curry don, all in the mini size except salad. For drinks, they're having a 1-for-1 Asahi mug/jug promo. But then, I can't drink 2 mugs so no go. Instead ordered a Samurai ($6.80++) which is sake + lime with ice cubes, while my friend ordered iced green tea ($1 and refillable).
The only service lapse was in getting our drinks to our table. It took them ages and after we feedback twice, the service staff was apologetic. Main reason was they were short-handed that night.
Salad was served first, with lots of greens and strips of salmon, maguro and squid. The sauce is soy sauce based laced with wasabi. The regular size is just enough to be shared by 2 person. We ate slowly, chit-chatted and almost finished the entire plate of salad before our noodles and rice reached our table. By now, when the food arrived, it's always accompanied by "Sorry to keep you waiting." Very polite.
The curry rice was served piping hot and it was good. Thick curry with a little spice, and 3 pieces of fried meat served ontop of a large mound of rice. Quite alot of rice for a mini don. The meat was juicy and tender. A good sampler for the bigger set meal version. But pricey.
The dessert was good! Rich thick matcha ice-cream served with rice balls and red bean. The red bean sweetness was just nice and it didn't overtake the taste of the matcha. It's a good complement.

| efficient and fast
Was at the restaurant around 8+, and the place was crowded. But the wait staff managed to find a table for 3, in just 5 minutes.
Ordered TAK pork belly, oyster soup, french beans with salted egg, plum sauce duck, chao nian gao and lastly mango with sago for dessert.
All those, for just the 3 of us ladies... haha, we ate alot! With steamed rice each! ($1 a bowl)
The chao nian gao, we all thought it'll come out fried.. but instead, its cooked with minced vegetable in sauce. Hmmmm... so that was the surprise of the evening. The french beans (smallish) doesn't look like the picture in the menu but it is sure tasty! The pork belly was tender and served with vinegered vege (酸菜), and plum sauce duck (small can feed 2) tasted fine albeit a little saltish at the skin. Oyster soup, I find it lacking in oyster and it tasted more like hot spicy sour soup with lots of vinegar and pepper pre-mixed in,
Dessert has lots of ingredients but is quite a small bowl.

| Spacious restaurant
It's a colorful joint. Wall decor and seats, are catchy on the eyes. Tuesday night, with minimum crowd... probably one third occupied.
Tried the half slab ribs, buttersquash sweet potato soup and seafood marinara.
Had my reservations about the buttersquash soup (coz I have no idea how a buttersquash looks like nor taste like prior!). It's mustard orange colored and it tasted quite nice. Sweet in fact. The accompanying garlic slice was also crispy.
The seafood marinara arrived second, piping hot with the spaghetti drenched lovingly in sauce. Seafood means just squid and prawns. The prawns were succulent and firm.
Last, was the ribs. It's served on a large plate, with a big mound of mashed potato at its side and some fresh greens. Simple. The ribs were huge, and the meat falls off easily. But I had a corner piece that turned out chewy and tough! The rest of the meat around the bones fared better, as it was tender.
Water was refilled regularly after we completed our dinner but our server had the habit of his eyes looking at some far corner in the restaurant while pouring our cup.

Was there on a Friday night, and no worries about seats.. plenty of it. Most patrons looked young and comprises of students and young working adults and occasional tourist.
The menu is not extensive but it is indeed price friendly. Set meals comes with free-flow of ice-cream and drinks. Drinks can choose from soft-drinks, ice-lemon tea and fruit punch syrup plus there's a machine that spews out coffee, hot choc, cappucino those kind. The cheapest set meal is the gyoza set at $5.90++ only. Comes with rice, miso soup and kimchi. I ordered the spicy chicken set at $6.90++. Quite alot of meat and spicy indeed!
As a first timer, had a difficult time finding the free-flow area as I was seated at a far section. So I was carrying my ice-cream cup and drinks cup walking around looking silly.
Otherwise, the bill is to be paid within 1 hour of the issue (printed on the bill).

| Dinner on Sat
I arrived late, and my friends were already seated. The place was not crowded but I did need to scan for my party as they were seated in one of the booth seats which are quite hidden from view. It would be nice if one of the staff could come by to offer help or ask what/whom I was looking for...
It's a typical Western joint, and the menu looked good with nice pictures, and being a first-timer at this place, it took me some minutes to decide on my dinner. I spied my friend's dishes (as they had ordered ahead) and the spaghetti with roasted chicken seemed like a big portion. The devil's fish and chips looked good too with huge chunk of fish. To order, you do need to wave a while especially if you're seated in the booth section as the wait staff seemed to overlook this area.
Food arrived in due time. Initially we had to remind the staff for water refills, but after which, it was done at appropriate intervals. Do request for the complimentary candy floss if you like sweet stuffs.
As for the food, for appetiser we had the fried chicken wings, fried mushrooms and fried calamari. The chicken wings were tasty but very oily. The calamari is non-marinated hence, you'll need the various dips. The Atlantic dory ($15.90++) that I had was firm and fragrant with the butter sauce. I tasted some of my friend's spaghetti (with tomato based sauce) and it was nicely al-dente, sweet and savoury.

| coffeeshop hawker fare
Visited on a Sunday night, and was drizzling. The place was abuzz with activities and there are many stacks of dishes on the floor. Probably they need more helpers. Ambience is coffee shop like.
Wanted to try char kway teow but it was indicated to be 20 mins waiting time, so opted for the other dishes which was presumed to be made in shorter time such as rojak, curry mee and rice dish which I can't recall the name.
The rojak was nice with juicy fruits which included the usual suspects like mango, pineapple, turnip, cucumber. The curry mee was lukewarm at best. But it did have my favourite cockles. Other ingredients include fishball, prawns and mint leaves. But I thought Penang curry mee was supposed to be spicy?
The rice dish came with chicken braised in soy sauce (with 1 mushroom),a side dish of ju hu char (cuttlefish and cooked turnip shreds) and sambal petai. The sambal tasted burnt and a little bitter.
Ordered also the bat bo leong char, but it tasted funny. Kinda peppery. |

| misadventure
Remembered the shop for their springy noodles way back in 2005/2006, so dragged my friends along to try it again recently.
Standard has definitely dropped. The noodles was less springy, but it was still tasty. We ordered shrimp dumpling noodles soup and dry, a char siew noodle with wanton (no char siew wanton combo so the wanton was treated as a separate order of extra charge of $3). Noodles here costs around $7+ per plate. We also had some dim sum such as chicken feet ($5) and spare ribs ($6). Drinks, we had lime plum juice ($5.50), ice lemon tea ($5.50) and chinese tea ($1.50). Definitely, expensive.
Service was poor and inadequate. One order of shrimp dumpling noodles soup was missed out and had to remind them 2 times before it was brought over. But the ultimate disaster was when the trainee waiter dropped the bowl of soup onto my friend's bag!! He just stood there and didn't do anything till we glared at him, and he mumbled 'Sorry.' Had to ask him to bring over paper towels to soak up the soup...
The restaurant didn't offer any any sweetener, except to check if the offending party has apologized when we feedback to them the incident. |

Heard about Madam Kwan's and happened to be at Mid-Valley, so went in to try.
One thing that stands out when we first walked in was, how dark the place was.
Ordered nasi lemak and char kway teow. Both came out in decent portion, and shared by 3 girls. The nasi lemak rice was fragrant and fluffy, with meaty chicken rendang. Char kway teow was well-fried and tasty.
But at an average price of $15 per plate, one could've gotten similar quality elsewhere in greater quantity.
Madam Kwan is possibly a touristy thing to do, while in KL. |
