| Not a bad place at all
This place is located on the 2nd Floor of Hotel Royal @ Queens, which used to be the Queens St end of the Allson Hotel. This is not the first Chinese restaurant in this corner of the hotel, there were others before and they were all OK.
For lunch, they used to have half price dim sum but not any more. All one gets is 15% off for DBS cards, still OK I guess. Most of the dimsum items were $3.6 - 4.0 before discount.
HAR GAO $4 for 4 large fat 3cm diameter ones, with lots of prawns but not much other fillers. Thumbs up.
CHASIU BAO $3.6 for 3. It was good, with a very nice and tasty filling
CARROT CAKE. This was average
XIAO LONG BAO. Very soft skin which broke easily so we lost half the generous soup inside. 3 pieces for $3.6 OK I guess as it is the larger variey. Tasted good but skin should be more resilient.
EGG CUSTARD PASTRY. Small but very nice.
CONGEE - OK but not good value considering the size of the serving $4-5 each.
YANZHOU FRIED RICE $18 medium serving (filled 7 bowls).
Ambience was nice, service was good and attentive. Prices are OK but I could have paid a bit more and get better quality at Royal China or Wah Lok or paid less and get the same quality at Ah Yat at Beach Road or UE Square. |

| Decent place
It has been some time since I was last in the Simpang Bedok Shopping Centre area and not realised that a few of the old shophouses and coffeeshops have now been turned into nice airconditioned restaurants.
Sedap Corner is literally in the back corner behind the market/food centre.
The menu consists mainly of asian food like nasi goreng with chicken, pad thai, tom yum, mostly between $8-12 and western stuff like chicken chop ($16), steak ($20), fish and chips etc. Drinks are about $3-5 and their famous kaya toast, sliced into long strips for dipping into various types of kaya, are about $3-4 per serve from memory. About 10 of us came over for someone's farewell. I did not pay so I do not how much the bill came up to.
We started off with sharing mixed seafood platters and each came with shishamo, prawns, calamari and seafood rolls. I think this is about $26 per plate and would be enough for a main course by itself. This was decent - the calamari was tender enough (a good test).
Each of us had main courses, ranging from pad thai, tom yum noodles, green curry laksa, grilled chicken, surf and turf (Steak, prawns and squid). I asked everyone for their opinions and a score out of 10 and the scores given ranged from 6 to 7.5. Most of them also added that the portions were generous for the western dishes (the surf and turf looked a lot with about 350g of steak and seafood (my estimate). My pad thai was not bad but pales in comparison with places like First Thai or Diandin.
We also ordered some kaya toast - the toast is unfortunately not charcoal toasted so does not have the wonderful charcoal taste. The bread is cut into long strips and dipped into the kaya placed in a separate bowl-shaped compartment in the dish. They have various flavours, Pandan, Durian, Jackfruit. The kaya is good but I wish they charcoal the bread. No butter - it is supposed to be in the kaya but honestly, I like it more buttery.
The place is not very big and we were the only ones indoors so it was really pleasant but I can see how it can get a bit noisy. Decor is no frills air conditioned. Toilet was clean enough.
Service was attentive and friendly. |

| Much better than expected
Not sure what to expect after reading the reviews here. A colleague loves this place and so we, the 6 of us, came for lunch (S$33++).
It is a smallish place and was only half full during lunch so we had no problems with noise levels, which can get quite high.
We ordered lots of stuff and they gave lots of other which we didn't order so here goes:
Sashimi. Well, the sashimi here is much better than any other jap buffet I have tried. It was fresh, nicely cut, well presented, not fishy at all. Excellent, if only they gave real shiso leaves and fresh wasabi. But 6 of us had 3 serves totalling about 100 slices.
Salmon skin hand roll. Good, but I have had better elsewhere but I still enjoyed it.
Sushi - 1 slice of hamachi and 1 slice of swordfish each. This was really nice, large pieces with a small bit of rice hidden below, just like in Japan. Very fresh and good
Tempura - average, nothing memorable
Chawan mushi - average, nothing great
Chicken yakitori - average, can get better elsewhere
Unagi - pretty good.
Eggplant fried with miso - this was very nice
Agedashi tofu - quite good
Nabe - average |

| WOW sort of place
It took us 1.5 hours to crawl through a wet KL evening to get there. And on the way, we wondered "this had better be good" ....
Nestled in the hills / jungle at Tmn Tun Abd Razak, this place is all about ambience. No air conditioning, but you feel like you are in a great posh place right in the middle of the tropical forest, complete with fake cricket sounds etc etc, manmade waterfalls and the like. In the evening, it was just something else. One of these places that get a 10 for ambience - well, almost. Hard to match, really.
The particular joint we went to served Indochinese food and we had a variety of Vietnamese starters (watermelon salad, squid balls, etc) which were very nice and then came the main dishes - curries, stir fries with rice, which were generally decent but nothing really fantastic.
Including wines (4-5 bottles, drinks, beer, coffees etc), it came up to about RM200 per head. Well, if ambience is your sort of thing .. hy not. If food is the focus, then don't bother. I think the set dinner itself was over Rm120 per pax.
Service was pretty good, but not spectacular given the sort of price we were paying. |

| Pricey, Classy, Pity about the food
Enak must be one of the more classy Malay/Indonesian places in KL. Located in the basement restaurants floor of Starhill, it spells image, class, style etc.
Apart from the rather dim lighting, it was really nicely decorated with style. The environment was also nicely not too noisy even though there is a bit of a din when full.
8 of us had:
Soto Ayam (RM16 per serving), which was not bad but just did not have enough spice. No real Soto kick, if you know what I mean
2 servings of Gado2 which was passable - somehow the dish tasted a bit stale and mouldy ....
2 servings of tauhu goreng - OK but I have had better elsewhere.
2 servings of chicken curry - 4 pieces each serving and it was nicely thick and hot (as in chilli hot) but somehow lacked real fragrance of good curries
2 servings of stuffed squid, which was OK but not memorable
2 serving of grilled fish, which was nice but RM 38 for 2 pieces (about 100g total) is very expensive.
2 servings of kangkong, which was easily the most tasty dish....
Service was good - I had no complaints about it.
In short, good for tourists but the food did not have KICK. |

| Enjoyable
Vogue is the main cafe for the Renaissance West Wing (the more upmarket bit) and is one of those places people don't usually pay money to eat at - you know, breakfasts for hotel guests and lunches for those who are attending seminars and the like.
As far as cafes go, this one is good, with a nice high ceiling and tastfully decorated. I could not fault the service.
The starter section had sashimi, sushi (quite fresh), oysters, salads, dips etc, and those I tried did not dissappoint. I then went for mains, including rack of lamb (good, done nicely), chicken in polenta (OK), rogan josh (more spicy than usual, OK).
I liked the desserts. Lots of cakes and puddings in small bit sized portions in individual little plates so that you don't dig and make a mess of nice 8 inch cakes. 8 flavours of ice cream, the usual fruit but with lots of large strawberries.
If you do come and eat here, I think it will cost about RM70-80 nett. Not exactly cheap I suppose.. |

| Promising but .....
This place looked really good. The decor was tastefully Japanese (not modern) with lots of beige, backlit paper, large tables with enough space in between, kimonos etc.... It was quiet and classy
So I sat down in the 1/4 full large restaurant with separate private rooms, sushi bar, teppanyaki area ...
I ordered a set comprising beef yakitori, mixed tempura and it came with chawan mushi, rice, soup, appetisers, fruits, green tea ice cream.. for RM75 ++ or about RM 90 nett.
The lotus root appetiser came first and was really quite nice. Soft but still crunchy lotus root with radish and carrot. Just enough sweetness.
15 min later, the rest came... minus the chawan mushi... almost 5 minutes without a waiter in sight. Finally a waitress appeared and that got sorted out. That's where the dissappointment started. The BEEF was tough - it was done medium still red inside and looked really good - but it was tough and chewy - jaw fatiguing. And the rice - eh, long grain rice and not short grain Japanese .. not so authentic. The tempura - was almost right - except that it did not quite look like tempura and the batter was a bit heavier than it should be, like goreng pisang .. yes it was crunchy but a bit harder than tempura batter should be. For RM75 I expected tender beef and better tempura. Forgiveable in a budget Japanese joint but not at such a high end place.
The green tea ice cream was a bit icey but otherwise OK.
So overall, nope, does not quite make the grade.... |

| What a difference a day makes
2 nights ago, 24 of us had a nice dinner here so quite a few of us decided to return here. And what a different experience it was.
We arrived without reservations and the captain was nice enough to arrange a table for the 9 of us. But he didn't seem particularly happy about it
As they set up the table, they forgot the napkins. They also forgot salt and pepper. Small hiccup that was fixed but only after reminding. The rest of the service was quite average, with wait staff that really had no idea who ordered what. There were quite a few other hiccups as well.
THe bread rolls served were decent and warm served with olive oil pesto, olive oil with vinegar and tomato.
We ordered 3 pizzas to share. We were expecting nice pizzas (about RM30-35 each for a 10 inch one). These came thin and crisp. BUT .. they were utterly bland and tasteless. A few of us thought these were the WORST pizzas we had tasted. The tomato paste was tasteless, the cheese was NOT mozzarella and quite bland, it was not salty enough, there was no pizza "smell", even pizza hut would have been better than this. The pizza was not even worth [paying RM5 for)
The mains fared better. A few had steaks, I had the beef rib. But not very memorable, unlike the cod from 2 nights ago. THe pastas, according to those who had them, were passable and very average.
Overall, we were dissappointed this time around. It seems to do OK for mains, but pizza and pasta failed for an Italian restaurant. Especially for the price paid.
This is a far cry from 2 nights ago .... read the other review. |

| Pleasant and good
After having tried 3 of the restaurants at Marriott Putrajaya, 9 of us decided that we should try the Chinese one.
I like the ambience. Unlike many Chinese places, this has nice high ceilings and is not overly noisy. Quite relaxing but perhaps this was because it was only 1/4 full.
The service was excellent and I could not fault the speed nor the attentiveness.
As we had been eating a lot, we had the following:
1) Combination, which consisted a siu mai, deep fried seafood roll, jellyfish etc. RM18 per person I think.
2) Seafood tofu soup, which received the thumbs up. It was nice with lots of seafood. One of the better chinese soups I have tried lately.
3) Sweet sour chicken - well, no complaints but no great shakes either
4) Prawns - shelled and deep fried with a light sauce. This was quite good too.
5) Broccoli and garlic shoots stir fried -= perfectly done with some cruncgh left but not too raw either.
6) Bean curd with veg.
The bill, I though was very reasonable given the service and quality. |

| Decent
Another review from me at this hotel. This review is based on lunch buffet as part of my conference package. So no price information (I need to ask)
FOOD
The food is decently good. The salad and starter selection was decent but nothing fantastic. There is a decent laksa pahang stall and a good tandoor with nice curries. The western mains were OK, the roast beef today was good (did not have the roast chicken yesterday) with very nice roast potatoes. The Asian mains were OK. The desserts were nothing to shout about but decent.
SERVICE
Was good with plates quickly cleared etc.
AMBIENCE
Decent nice high ceiling, no strong cooking smells. |
