| Classic Decoration... So so desserts...
Gobi at Suntec is a well decorated place that makes you like an English from the 18th century. Rustic and classic design couped with very English tables and chairs make this place a very lovely place to enjoy a cup of earl grey and have a piece of cake in.
Gobi is at the entrance from Suntec if you come from the citylink. Good location as it's at the entrance, me and my gf arrived on a Sunday afternoon wanting to try their cakes after having tried many other places. Quiet and almost empty, you can choose between sitting inside or at their alfresco area. I guess it's because of the time of the day that we were there hence, the quietness but the ambience and setting is really suitable for a nice romantic lunch./teabreak/dinner.
We ordered a Mille-feuille and a strawberry shortcake to share. The mille-feuille cake is something that we have yet to see. Normally used as part of a dessert, it's my first time seeing and trying it on itself. The mille-feuille cake came simply with icing on top. Howeverm it was hard and difficult to break. The normally flaky-feeling of mille-feuille wasn't there and the puff pastry within, while not overly sweet, leaves much to be desired. The strawberry shortcake was also disappointing. The sponge cake within wasn't soft enough and strawberry taste was subtled.
Service-wise, it was ok but I supposed it wasn't fair to judge as we were the only one there until when we were half-way done when another table was occupied. They were not paying too much attention to us nor not giving us any attention at all. Price-wise, they are comparable to 1 Caramel and Candele but for the money, the standard really doesn't cut it.
They do serve main courses and maybe, it will be better than their cakes or their speciality could be their french macaroons instead of the cakes. |

| Cheap western/japanese food
This joint serves decent japanese style western food and most importantly, it is very affordable!
The foccia cannot be missed! It is really good. Their spicy chicken drumlets are pretty flavourful as well.
There is much to this joint other than it's affordable prices, decent food and pretty big portion.
I've been here at 3 times and the service is pretty good as well. They even allowed me to change a dish after it was served as my mom ordered something with beef and pork thinking that the beef was going to be a small portion but it turned out to be the other way round.
You can get escargots at an affordable price too. Their tiramisu is pretty decent as well.
Oh, they also have a freeflow of drinks if you add I think around $2 to your meal. Very worth it if you intend to sit around after your meal. |

| Basketball Ramen
Wanted to try the different ramen in singapore led me to the 'basketball' ramen, Marutama.
Service is quick and prompt and me and my friends were served within minutes of our order. I realised that this seems to be the normal trade as almost all ramen stores I've been to, I', served pretty quickly. I supposed they want a high turnaround rate and judging from the queue during lunch, I guess maxisimising profit is the key. Basically at marutama, what is mainly the difference is that the ramen is thinner than other ramen stores. Also, they have a basic ramen and for everything else that you want, you got to order and add them. Normally, you can get a little of something at other ramen store. Their soup is good and after reading previous reviewers' review, I really wanted to try the egg and I did but it wasn't as I expected to be. It still can't meet the kind I expect from Japan where the egg yolk is really uncook.
Me and my collegues each ordered a ramen, I had the one with charsiew and I added egg. We also ordered the rice with char siew to share and gyoza. The fried dumpings are decent and the char siew with rice came smelling good and tasted good as well.
The place is pretty dark but the seating was pretty big and ample space are given to customers. Though a little noisy due to the lunch time crowd, we can still chat amongst ourselves and there wasn't a need to shout so I don't think it is that bad in that kind of a crowd.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the food and the draw is in their broth and the ramen. I'm also interested to try their 7 nuts ramen the next time I come back. Hopefully, I won't be disappointed! |

| Pig's cheek is tasty!
I'v been to Santouka 5 times. If you don't know this place or didn't see it's huge banner hanging from the singapore river side, you probably won't know this place cos I didn't till a friend brought me there for dinner once.
This ramen eatery is hidden behind some chinese restuarants in front and though there is a hidden esclator from the first floor, till now, I still don't know where it is! (the esclator I mean.)
The style of this place is very japanese. Staff dressed in japanese style clothes, (including the chef with the towel wrapped around their head) and even the seats and decor are very japanese. The seats are wooden with a cushion.
I was there on saturday evening around 8.30pm with my brother and the place was crowded. Luckily, most table were done and we were in within 5 mins of our arrival. Just before we entered, there was a japanese couple sitting outside waiting and upon going in, we were ushered to the counter seats where the moment we seat down, another japanese man were seated beside me.
You may wonder, what's the big deal but to me, where central and liang court has so many japanese eatery, it is akin to a japanese being in japan and coming in just to have a bowl of ramen. I think it speaks some little volume for the eatery.
Anyway, the food is the most important aspect and I've always only ordered the pig cheek ramen in shoyu and adding an egg to go along. Never once have I been disappointed with the meat! If you like lean meat with a little fat around it, the pig cheek is the way to go! Not like the normal ramen served in other restuarants where the pork is half fat and half meat, this plate of meat, around 6 pieces is heavenly! It is the only place thus far, that I know, that have this. Though their seasoning is a little on the salty side, eating the meat with its broth and ramen, makes it more or less more acceptable.
Santouka's ramen is the thick kind and the broth is indeed a little on the salty and oily side but for that piece of meat that they provide, I guess I can bear with it! |

| Chef was giving... giving away salt!
Just had dinner with my friend and his wife at Happy daze after mahjong session.
The place has a pool table and free board games for its customer. The place is made up of 2 shop spaces and the place is simple with pictures from around the world.
I ordered what was supposed to be the chef's recommendation. Chicken with roasted potatoes. Firstly, it didn't came as described as the roasted potatoes became potato wedges. I'll agree that the dish came out almost identical to the picture in the menu but seriously, I think that the chef must be in festive mood as the sauce of the chicken was so salty! Was he thinking of gifting us salt? The dish also came with 2 red cherry tomatoes and one look, I could tell it came fresh... fresh out of the refrigerator! The asparagus on top was the chicken, in which asparagus is my favourite by the way, was almost as good as spoilt! Asparagus which is normally crunchy, in this case of mine, was soggy and broke almost instantly as my fork met it. It was a turn-off.
Seriously, I don't know how this place could survive but one thing I'm certain about is that I won't be visiting this place anytime soon and I will definitely not recommend this place to my friends. I think the Aston Corner down the road by the coffee shop will surely be better and cheaper! |

| Me & My gf's love for HK food
Sick and tired of common HK cafe food, lead me on this hunt for something within the price range and yet better (I hope) than the normal HK cafe one can find.
HGW led me to Prosperity Kitchen.
Where is this place, it is actually just a few steps away from The Patissier; i.e. to say, along the bars but nearer to the UE square condo.
Based on other reviewers' review, me and my gf ordered a fried rice each, hers being the fujian fried rice, while my was the prosperity fried rice. In addition, we ordered their prosperity duck to share.
The duck, cost $10.80 but man, was it delicious! It was soft and tender yet the skin was crispy. The sauce is also light and yet tasty. Furthermore, it was done to almost prefection.
The prosperity fried rice is wrapped in pandan leaf and once you open the cover, the smell just gush out and you can instantly smell the flavourful ingredients put in this dish. There is dried scallop, prawn and other seafood. Though it costs above $10, the ingredients they use and the freshness of the ingredients make it so worthwhile! The fujian fried rice is similar in many aspects except there is no pandan leave nor dried scallop so the smell isn't as great but nonetheless, the freshness of the ingredients still makes up for it.
We had a iced yuan yang and a longan with white fungus and chinese wolfberries. The longan with white fungus and chinese woldberries is very light and refreshing. Good for throat and to reduce the heatiness in one. The yuan yang I had was pretty decent too. However, their version is slighty heavier on the coffee side so depending on which kind you fancy, it might not be a good mix for you.
The place is well-decorated. It has white sofa seats and black wooden table. The seats are a little soft; hence you might dip a little as compared to the bench seats. The place is filled with old hongkong pictures as wallpaper and also many celebrities' photo on the wall. The time me and my gf was there was nearly 3pm and we were the only one so it was very conducive to sit in and the atmosphere was lovely. Though they closed at 3.30pm, the staff didn't give us the feeling that they wanted us to get out as soon as possible and always had a smile on their faces and it made the afternoon for us.
All in all, we had a nice time and I believe that even if it's crowded, the standard of the staff wouldn't deviate too much. I'm certain I'll be back and I'll back my family and friends to enjoy the food with us, along with the chance to try all their other dishes.
(P.s. I can't remember how long the promotion is, but there is a 15% discount for Citibank credit card holders.) |

| Artsy European Style Lunch...
Came here upon the reviews I found on HGW. Despite it being a distance from my office, what is the distance if one can find good food?
Sat down on wooden chairs accompained by a wooden table. The place is relatively small and comes with difference kind of furnitures. While me and my friends were on the wooden chairs, there were others on other materials of furniture. It is a modern yet filled with old-english style feeling.
The huge menu stretches across the wall behind the counter. They serve pasta, pizza, sandwiches, rolls, desert, cakes and drinks. Things you can find in a western concept cafe. As it was my first time, we decided to ask the staff what we can order to share for 3. She mentioned that we should get 2 pizzas to share or 1 pizza plus say a sandwich or roll and she gladly cut it to 3s for us. Service, wonderful. However, her suggestion wasn't so good. Her suggestion seems to fill 3 people but not Asians. We ordered a pizza, one with the owners' name (the other also had another owners' name) and a black pepper beef pasta. It was too much for the 2 guys and 1 lady. The pizza was a biscuit-like pizza with loads of cheese, ham and vegetable. The pasta was spicy but for me, acceptable. The pizza is crispy and breaks easily so care must be taken to ensure that you would end up with nothing before it reaches your plate. However, I personally find it a little too heavy on the cheese side. After about 2 'slices', I couldn't take it anymore.
The prices of the food and drinks are rather steep for lunch. For one sandwich, it can easily go up to around $8. Foodwise, I think it's pretty ok. Nothing fantasic. However, the service and the setting does make up for it. I supposed if you do drop by after lunch hours, it will be a reallly good place to chill and read a book, while having some of their rather unique drinks. |

| Small cosy quiet cafe
This cafe is hidden within some terrance house beside Thomson shopping centre. The first thing I want to point out is there actually a little side door near the entrance for delivery. There's a small signboard near the fences so instead of going a big around to get there, look out for the small gate near the fences.
The place is rather small with a quite a variety in their menu. The place is very cosy despite it being small and a good place to go on a weekend if you want to do some book reading or internet surfing over a cup of nice hot chocolate with marshmellow.
The thing about this cafe that caught my attention? The name of this place. I guess the owner must have put in a great deal of effort to come up with the name. He/She must have the ambition to have his/her little part 1, 2,3... cafe.
We ordered a Italian crepe to share which consists of cheese, mushroom and ham. The crepe wasn't as nice as expected as the crepe was rather soggy and the filling were literally busting out of the crepe. We also ordered their buffolo wings which was spicy and had a unique taste to it. I guess the marination made the difference! We also ordered the breaded fish and warm apple pie to share. The breaded fish was of just the right amount of bread and came with wasabi. I didn't try the apple pie so no comments on that.
The thing that I really want to recommend is their hot chocolate. It came in a large mug and was delicious! I'm not a huge fan of hot chocolate as I'm always worried that it would be too sweet but alas, this isn't! I finished every last drop of it!
There's this dish that also attracted me and that is their draught beef that is supposed to be marinated for hours. I would really want to try that the next time I'm here and hope I won't get drunk eating it.
Overall, a very cosy place with nice armchairs to sit it. Though it seems a little messy, they do have books, magazines and boardgames for their customers. Service is prompt and we were well-taken care of.
I'll definitely look forward to my next visit. Hopefully this place keeps being such a quiet and secret place. |

| Acceptable dim sum...
Always wanted to try the dim sum here but had never gotten the chance as it was not near work and what is dim sum if you eat alone?
Finally, on this fateful Sunday, while waiting for some friends to finish their anime shopping, me and 3 other friends decided to take a seat wanting only to try their custard buns after hearing rave reviews about it but ended up ordering quite a few dishes when we just had lunch barely 30 mins ago at Fish & Co!!!
Dim Sum just never seems to lose its appeal on us... We ordered the standard to assess the quality of Victor's Kitchen, namely; har gou, siew mai, spare ribs, custard bun, chee cheong fun and fu zhu roll.
Their main highlight other than the custard bun was their King size har gou. It was decent and filled with loads of prawns. The skin is tendered and not overly thick. However, it is not crystal clear and thin as paper. The siew mai has a mixture of pork and prawn and is pretty decent. The custard bun is indeed different and "lightly creamed". The bun is soft and fluffy and not too overpowering with regards to the custard within. The spare ribs, chee cheong fun and fu zhu roll are also pretty standard. Not much variation so nothing much to wow about.
The place is rather big but just meant for you to sit down and dine so nothing much to talk about ambience. The staff are also pretty friendly and was easy-going as we initially had intended to take away and they have no problems with us suddenly switching to dining in.
Overall, not a bad dim sum place and prices are pretty reasonable as well. |

| Mussel Mussel Mussel
This will be my first review of first reviews.
I went to The Mussel Guys @ Orchard Central for dinner some time back and it is located at the 8th floor around a thai, korean, american and japanese restaurant.
I was given seats near the "balcony" where there was a view of the skateboard rink @ somerset. Having dinner on a Friday night at around 8pm and with this view might not be as awesome as compared to having dinner overlooking the beach but it was pretty decent with the minimum lights and clear dark skies.
The Mussel Guys is a rather small place. Almost squeezed to the max that inevitably, you might be able to catch the conversation on the table beside you.
Foodwise, we ordered 2 different mussels as they were going for 1-for-1 and you could mix the flavours. We ordered a spicy one and a normal one as the Belgium mussels were out by the time we reached. The mussels were good. I supposed that should be expected as they are indeed called the Mussel Guys. Imagine what kind of a Mussel Guys will they be if their mussels suck? We also each ordered a main but I can't recall what we had as it was some time back. However, I'm pretty sure it was decent enough as we had no complains about it. Maybe, there wasn't much praise or what not to cheer about, but at least we have no bad things to say.
The service was pretty prompt and food was quickly served though ice water was served upon our request but after our 2nd request for it that it arrived. The management might need to work on their staff with regards to this.
Pricewise, the mains are quite regularly priced at around $10+ with soup and drink to complete the meal at a couple more dollars. The mussels are good but I think it is more worthwhile only with the 1-for-1.
Overall, I wouldn't mind coming back for their mussels but if and only if with the 1-for-1 and their mains are just pretty normal so it is comparable to any other cafes you can find. |
