| value-for-money lunch
Needing an easy, fuss-free lunch option near Bukit Timah one day, we headed down to Greenwood. We first tried Peperoni, but found it was still not ready for lunch at 12.05pm. Being hungry and not wanting to wait for it to open, we wandered down the row and found ourselves in front of Greenwood Fish Market.
Seeing that it had a really reasonable set lunch available ($19.90++), we plonked ourselves down on one of the 2 alfresco tables available.
The set lunch includes a soup or salad, choice of main courses and coffee/tea.
We each had one appetiser - a potato and leek soup and the fresh-smoked salmon salad. The soup was a little thin for me but still very tasty. The fresh-smoked salmon was a change from the usual cured salmon so the flaky texture, combined with the saltiness and the sour/sweetness of the vinaigrette made for a very nice salad.
The main courses were a choice of fish, done to your liking, and a couple of pastas. We ordered the battered barramundi and chips and the aglio-olio.
The barramundi was superbly fresh and cooked till tender, with a nicely piquant tartar sauce not letting the fish down. The only downside was that the batter started to get a little soggy and oily halfway through the meal which kind of forced me pick at the very nice fish and leave the batter. If it stayed crispy throughout the meal, it would have been close to perfection. Chips were decent but not outstanding.
The aglio-olio was very, very tasty. Probably because it had some anchovies in the sauce... yum. We chose to have it without the chilli for the sake of our toddler but it would have added a nice kick to it. It was terribly oily though which was a little unappetising towards the end of the meal because there was a small puddle of oil in which the last few strands of spaghetti was swimming.
Service was very unassuming and friendly. Water was topped up frequently and with a 10% citibank discount even on the set lunch, this is one place I will be returning to for great fish and good value. Will be trying the other seafood and pastas next... soft-shell chilli crab spaghetti sounds great!
Update:
Went back again on a Saturday lunch and this time the service was underwhelming. The bistro was only half-filled but found it difficult to get the servers' attention to get menus, take orders etc.
Food was still good - the chilli crab spaghetti was very tasty and was a massive portion. Definitely prefer the crumbed version of fish and chips. |
