| Good stuff
My girlfriend and I decided to try out this little restaurant, choosing it out of the three Japanese restaurants there. I've lived across the AYE for over 20 years but never came here. I should have.
We ordered Tonkotsu and Kyushu Special Ramen, Squid, Dried Stingray Wings, Stirfried Vegetables and Grilled Beef.
The Ramen was really good, not spectacular but very satisfying.
The Dried Stingray Wings were a surprise! Excellent as heck!
Squid was good, and thinly sliced and very nice.
Vegetables were hoohum...
The beef was excellent! We asked for some sesame sauce with it and remember to do so if you order this. It makes the pretty good beef dish into an excellent dish!
All in all, as far as Japanese food goes, this place is a gem, with reasonable prices, I'll be bringing my girlfriend there many many more times. |

| Sinful.. delicious.. can't get enough of it
Was at Plaza Singapura last night and ALL the places to eat had about 20 people in line.
Came across Lao Beijing with 3 people in line so I thought it was the place to go. Have not gone there for a couple of ice ages.
We ordered a few things:
- Scallop Broth
- Minced Pigeon Soup
- Garlic Fatty Pork
- Pig Ear and Tongue
- Stirfried Duck
- Braised Pork Roll (Beijing Yi-Dao Meat)
The soups were good. The fatty pork was excellent. The pig ear and tongue was eaten with relish. The duck is also very very nice as the capsicum and sprouts were a nice touch.
However, the Braised Pork Roll was... words fail me. The fat melts on your tongue with an explosion of tasty goodness.
The heck with the cholesterol count. This is good stuff.
Too bad there was only two of us else we'd have ordered Peking Duck.
I have to compliment the nice lady who was very patient advising us that we should come again if we liked the food as there was a cutout in the newspaper which gave us a discount. She also advised that if we had a big enough group, we could reserve one of their private dining rooms. Service excellence! |

| Love the desserts
Wandered into Mingles while strolling around the area.
Wasn't very hungry after a late lunch which we ate too much (story of our lives), so went in there for something "light".
Appetisers were skipped in favour of impending desserts.
An order of St Patrick's Roast Duck Confit (or something like that) and a Rosti with Pork Cheese Sausage.
The rosti and sausages were pretty normal fare but the roast duck was to die for. Granted the mystery vegetable wasn't that nice but the slices of medium rare duck breast, and the duck leg, melted as a goodness of flavour burst in your mouth.
Dessert was a Baked Alaska (ice cream baked in meringue) and three flavours (expresso, chocolate and vanilla) creme brulee. We requested boysenberry, rum and raisin and macadamia nut ice cream (they messed up and put in two macadamia nut ones but it's okay). Good.. yum.. what can I say but.. yum!
Now the creme brulee. Three flavours in three expresso cups. Starting with expresso. Instead of drenching it in expresso, they put a cracked coffee bean in it, infusing the coffee flavour all over the creme brulee, and the stuff was pale! The chocolate and vanilla ones were just as good.
We'll be going again to try out the other stuff, compliments to the chef. I look forward to the next time we go. |

| Not too bad
Okay, I've been to this place a few too many times without writing a review so I figure it's about time as I just went last night.
This time, we decided to share everything instead of getting our own stuff.
We ordered Carpaccio Funghi, a Quattro Formaggi pizza and Ravioli Di Pesce.
First off, the Carpaccio - I really enjoy carpaccio so I went with this. Good stuff. I liked the rocket and the mushrooms.. but the sliced beef was a wonderful touch to a salad.
What can I say about the Quattro Formaggi? I love this pizza and would eat it all day. ahaha
The Ravioli was pretty okay. Not spectacular but this is pretty okay.
I kind of like this restaurant because it's tucked in a corner of Vivocity and where the better restaurants have huge long lines, the horrid ones are empty, Modesto's is strangely devoid of lines and serves damned good food. The service is pretty good (although could be really much better) and I love the ambience.
I'll keep going again because of the good Italian food and also because I don't have to wait to get a table on a Saturday night! |

| Good stuff
I dropped in there for lunch today. It wasn't planned or anything, just happened to be at Bugis Junction to run some errands when it was a little past lunchtime and the stomach wanted to be filled.
We picked it because I said that I've never went there because there's something really weird about "Japanese Western Food".
Looked at the menu and was attracted by the Paella, however, the stomach wasn't that game for something that heavy and hearty.
We ordered escargot and camembert fritters for appetisers. For mains, we had chasoba salad and cuttlefish ink pasta.
The escargot was good stuff, although a little bit shrunken and overdone, still quite good. The fritters was basically just slightly battered fried cheese. Delicious.
The chasoba salad arrived first and it was good... really good. Perfect for a disgustingly hot day like today.
Then the cuttlefish ink pasta arrived. I was impressed. It was probably the best squid or cuttlefish ink pasta i've ever had. We ate it all.
I will return to this little restaurant again to try others. Especially the paella which was said to be excellent.
Quite happy with today's meal. |

| Lousy Crab!
Got dragged by the division boss at work to go there for makan because one of the guys is leaving us.
They seem to like Jumbo so much that a couple of them are card-carrying members.
Cut to the chase - we had:
- Steamed or Boiled Prawns
- Stir-fried "Emperor Tou Miao"
- Some kind of fish cake disguised in chicken skin
- Frog with loads of garlic and spring onion
- Fried baby squid
- Chilli Crab
- Assorted desserts
Let's go down the list:
Prawns: nothing fantastic. They were fresh, they were boiled or steamed. Pretty normal stuff.
Emperor Tou Miao: for over $20 a plate (we didn't know) it was pathetic. We didn't even know what the heck it was because it was suggested by the guy taking the order. When it came, it was unreasonably oily and salty.
Fish Cake Chicken Thingy: when I bit into it, I thought "WTF??" because it's normal fish cake, which they probably spread on the inside of a skinned chicken and roasted. Didn't like it, don't like my food disguised like that, prefered chicken. And it was way too salty.
Frog: again, nothing to shout about. Normal stirfry. Too gooey. I think they used a crapload of cornstarch. Garlic underdone, spring onion overdone, frog humdrum. Way too salty.
Baby Squid: isn't this supposed to be sweet? Crisp, crunchy, slightly sweet, very salty (are you beginning to see the pattern here?)
Chilli Crab: Chillied ketchup with egg for sauce, but that's typical these days. Big beef with the crab. I see the guys crack the pincer open, a lot of liquid rushes out. The meat is a small bit inside. Malnourished crab. The crab was huge, but it's very "skinny" inside. I had a piece of the body. The meat was flaky, and again, very skinny. I felt ripped off. Oh.. and very salty too.
For dessert, I had mango pudding. Texture was like agar-agar, not pudding. Slight mango taste and fragrance. Disappointing. At least it wasn't salty. AHAHAHAHA.
All that being said, the service was excellent.
Probably won't go there again unless dragged by the other people in the office. |

| Good stuff
Went shopping at Raffles City today and came across this place.
Decided to investigate and realised it was a "Japanese style Marche".
Had a few things like a Katsu Don, a seafood pizza and some yakitori. Dessert was a banana crepe.
The Katsu Don was pretty okay.
The seafood pizza was lovely. Thin crust, wonderful cheese and topped with lots of bonito flakes.
Most wonderful was the yakitori. The beef fillet stick was tender, moist and to die for. The quail egg wrapped in bacon is worth the cholesterol count.
We also had something which was a pile of herbs and vegetables wrapped in a sliver of meat. That was wonderful. The prawn wrapped in bacon was also wonderful.
The crepe wasn't anything to shout about, but it was a nice touch to the end of lunch.
I'd probably go again. It's good value for money. |

| Not too bad
Went to Waraku at East Coast for dinner last night.
We ordered a pile of stuff for two. And also a Calpis ChuHi and a Coke Float.
The food was pretty good, what we enjoyed was the scallop in butter. It was really buttery and tasted really sinful.
The crab in miso soup was a disappointment. I guess crab isn't in season because the crab was kind of scrawny.
I think it is good if a big group goes and has reservations for their room which looks like it can accommodate up to about 16.
Not the best Japanese food but pretty good. |

After our group's regular blood donation at HSA, we wanted a feed and decided on Tom Ton at Central.
We all heard about the Black Pig and had a go at it.
All in all, it was quite nice. Not spectacular but it was good.
We had Katsu Don, Mentaiko Tonkatsu, Miso Loin Set, Miso Steak Set and Top Grade Lion Set.
The side order of soft shell crab was also nice but nothing spectacular.
The decor was nice and the booth was a nice touch. The woody interior is nice and added to the dining experience.
Quite nice. We will probably return when we've gone round everything else we've got lined up. |

| Lots of fun!
We went to Yuki Yaki tonight for a fun session. The food wasn't the main thing, it was just us friends getting together and breaking bread (figuratively) together. Yuki Yaki seemed fun.
I was supposed to do most of the cooking, however, it was so much fun cooking that another took over the cooking and we ate all of the stuff she cooked.
The cooked stuff was just like Seoul Garden or whatever steamboat buffet around, messy, oily, greasy, spattering fun.
However, the main thing was the ice-cream. It was fun, silly and exhausting.. and messy.
But it was really fun.
I'd go again if just for the ice-cream making. |
