| Competent but boring food.
Hi people,
Am back with another review. Actually wanted Braise but was fully booked by large groups for the Saturday so i decided on Uluru after some interesting reviews.
Place is located at Duxton Hill, parking is even convenient at a Saturday evening with a carpark right at the door step. You can't miss it, at evening the alfresco area is surrounded with lit torches. Incidentally, Universal restaurant is located just further up the "hill"
The decoration is excellent, homely and tastefully done. Unlike some restaurants where too much decoration make it tacky. We asked to sit at the main dining room, picked out a spot near the washroom and i can peek at the kitchen hole and see the chef working.
Was greeted by the cheery hostess, who welcomed us with the menu and explaining their current promotion of adding S$20.00 to the set dinners will entitle us to any 3 drinks from the list of red/white wines and beers.
The food menu is really short and disappointing. It gives one the impression of "there's nothing to eat". My gf is seemingly unimpressed too. The thought of leaving the place came to mind but was thinking again that we have a movie to catch and we do need food.
So we ordered a 2 x 3 course dinners with 1 dinner taking advantage of the 3 drinks promotion only. For the starters we had the tomato soup and seafood salad. The mains were salmon and sirloin steak. Finished up with some strawberry tart and balsamic icecream and mudpie.
The salad is well-done with a tangy asian sauce with assorted vegetables and squid rings and 2 prawns. But i would have wished for more greens to this dish.
The soup reminds us of cheddar cheese and we couldn't actually taste the tomato in it. Comes topped with some kind of foam.
The mains are sirloin and salmon steak. BOTH are served in the EXACT SAME LAYOUT. 2 spears of asparagus each and a few french beans (i think) on-top on mashed potato. Salmon was topped with foam and sauce....something like the earlier foam in the tomato soup.
The sirloin steak is DELICIOUS, tasted of sweetness and the meat is done as medium rare steaks should be. I heard that this place actually uses the same type of grill as Mortons. Only 2 places in Singapore using this? One can only wonder how good can the wagyu steak be (S$100 for 200grams of marbling 8/9 claimed). I have confidence that this place can do the wagyu steak justice. On the other main dish, i tasted a little of the salmon and it is well done outside and a little pinky inside. Competent. Then again, this is a safe dish. How many people can do salmon wrongly?
The desserts are disappointing. The balasmi icecream which is sourish is a lousy contrast to the strawberry tart. The mudpie is more like a chocolate cake straight from the fridge. Both dessert dishes are presented IN THE SAME MANNER with same raspberries, etc. GF thinks the desserts cakes could be purchased outside instead of self-made...
On the drinks that is with the S$20 top-up, i think the beers are a better deal than the red wine.
Lastly, on the service. The hostess is very friendly, professional cheerful, it's to Uluru good fortune to have such a good staff. Well ...on one of the guy host, he couldn't be bothered or neglected to present me with cutlery to share the salad with my girlfriend. Tried to get his attention but failed and i have to walk towards him to make my point. And one last thing, the singer is quite good but it can get a little loud in the dining room making conversation difficult. |
