| Crab is the focus - no crap
I've dined at the Square when this cafe had a weekend promotion with foie gras and it was a good experience. One more time in Dec last year which was a forgetable experience, but things have changed. The team at The Square have injected a new insight into the buffet dining since then and have come up with an interesting proposal - All the Crabs, and freshly prepared dishes in a buffet dining. Thanks to Kevin, Simon and Michael and team, the dishes are more original, crabs fresh and appetisers genuine. Read on. Food: At first glance, it is a typical buffet spread, salads to the left, chilled seafood further on, hot dishes in steamers next, but it changes thererafter - fresh shashimi, chilled sushi (to avoid upset stomachs), and lo and behold - sample dishes displayed for your choice and the chef cooks these dishes on the spot: spaghetti, black mussels in garlic. Ending with a hot meat roast (it was lamb this day) you'll be wondering why the crab is about? Well this cafe offers you freshly prepared crab in three styles: garlic, chilli and pepper, all freshly cooked to order and brought to your table. Typically serving size is about two pieces but you can order as many servings as you want, so long as you finish it since crab is an expensive item. The crabs are delicious, particularly the chilli and pepper crab but personally I did not like the garlic crab as the pieces are coated with a thick batter - others may enjoy it. These crabs are not the Sri Lanka variety but a decent Indon/Malaysia cousin. Good reason to dine at the Square, especially for crab lovers accompanied by their non-crab eating friends who have a great variety of other selections - all asty. Ambience: Set on the 7th floor, the outer seats overlook Clarke Quay and if you're a diehard haze friend, sit outside but we chose to sit in aircon comfort. Comfortable sofa seats or chairs in a European style seating made us feel comfortable. Dishes to clean out fingers after eating crabs encouraged us to "dig in". Value: Pretty much normally priced buffet dinner, but if you're an ACCOR card holder (Novotel, Sofitel, Ibis, Mercure hotels) you get a 50% discount - so join up with ACCOR. Service: Very attentive and friendly staff.
