Forget La Forketta

We had the worst dining experience we have ever had at La Forketta in Dempsey Road last night. It was my husband's birthday and we went out for dinner with our newborn baby and my parents. It was unpleasant to be told right off the bat that the restaurant does not serve tap water and that we had to fork out $9 for bottled water. I asked for an un-iced bottle and before we knew it, ice cold water was poured into our glasses. When we then asked for one glass of water at room temperature for my mum who was having a sore throat (the reason we ordered the un-iced water in the first place), we were told it would cost an extra $1. So tacky! When we were ordering the food, my dad asked if he could have fettucine instead of spaghetti with the carbonara sauce. We were told they don't have fettucine and then when he asked to have tagliatelle instead, we were told the restaurant would charge us an extra $5 for that. By then, we had already ordered a bottle of wine and 3 other mains, all totaling at least $250. We would most certainly have had dessert too. When we complained to their manager that ever since we sat down, we were being asked to pay an extra few dollars for this and an extra few dollars for that, he was unapologetic, rude, and could barely speak proper English. We said we were leaving and he threatened to call the cops because we were not going to pay for the bottle of water that was opened for us. We reminded him that we had ordered un-iced water and that we were served iced water and told him that was why we were not going to pay for it. It was an awful, nasty dining experience. Clearly, La Forketta is trying to milk its customers for all their worth, whilst putting itself out there as a classy restaurant (which clearly it is not). After we came home, I googled La Forketta and was not surprised to find many, many bad reviews of the restaurant, its policies and the service. Definitely a restaurant to avoid, unless you want to feel like you’re being pick-pocketed while you eat.

Management Response: 17 Nov 2008 Ms Mendis ,all the restuarant from all over the world has a house rules, example in Italy they have a table charge $8 or more PER PERSON the minute you seat down is call CORPETTO .Our local chinese restuarant charge from peanuts to towel and tea ,so you see they all different way of charging so long the customers are aware of it. That doesn't mean we are pickpocking.I sure in INDIA where you come from there are other house rules too
To be fair to the service staff,he has inform you the extra charge of $5 for you to decide. How can you called that PICKPOCKET.Well you are changing from dry pasta to handmade fresh pasta,we are charging $5 is just to cover the cost. If you are at the supermarket go and checked up the big different in prices. The dry pasta are alots cheaper.
La Forketta has been around for 20 Years
we value all our customers.Peoples that patronizes our restuarant are all professional and celebrities. And we worked very hard to up keep the qualities and services.
Despite the economy down turn we are still FULLY BOOKED everyday. And that speak for itself.
Hope to be able to served you again.

Thank You

Best Regards
Gracie Vitale

Did you even see the tone of the management response???!!! OMG!!!! Maybe they should just keep to their Italy restaurants then, in this case. And it is not that we don't know that you charge my dear, it is the fact that the charge is ridiculous. You still don't get it....tsk tsk. Sure they can be fully booked everyday: I mean of course I understand that there are people who choose to pay for such unreasonable pricing and service, but us??? We are certainly not one of those :D

Oh where to start? First of all, Dineli, I feel so so bad for your experience, but be consoled by the fact that everyone who goes there seems to have a terrible experience! Secondly, I can't believe the response that you received from the MD of the restaurant. La Forketta lacks the hospitality that Italian restaurants are known for both in Italy and abroad.

One of Vitale's "gems" was this line: "In Italy they have a table charge $8 or more PER PERSON the minute you seat down is call CORPETTO". True, there is a cover charge that varies regionally as well as from restaurant to restaurant, but a little bit of advice to an obnoxious and arrogant managing director: Before you write about the cover charge in Italy, make sure you're not writing (in all caps, I might point out) that they call it "a waistcoat"---because "corpetto" is waistcoat. (The word I assume Ms Vitale was going for was "coperto" which means cover charge.)

However, even if the restaurant had great food, great value, great service (which it doesn't) just the fact that the managing director would even say something like "I sure in INDIA where you come from..." would be enough for me to agree that this is NOT an establishment that anyone should be supporting. No one wants to eat at a place where the MD makes such racist remarks.
