Peranakan quick fix

I love love love love love Peranakan cuisine. I always say that if I ever have to put up with a Mother-in-law that turns out to be a Monster-in-law...I'll only pander to her if she's a true blue nonya for I will dedicate my life to learning the secrets of peranakan cooking from her.

It is a wonder though that I've never been to this particular peranakan restaurant having been working in the vicinity for 2 years. Somehow, the place didn't call out to me and none of my colleagues ever suggested going there...until today. I was suppose to head next door for my fish noodle soup fix but somehow my colleague who usually is not fuss about food and doesn't really care what's for lunch, suggested we try this place.

Little wonder that it was empty although we were there a tad early..about 1130am. We decided to keep it simple and went for the set lunch.

The set however is suppose to be meant for 2 only and consisted of Buah Keluak, Assam Fish head and Ngo Hiang.

We weren't big buah keluak fans and I didn't wanna work too hard for my lunch today, we decided to replace the Buah Keluak with Ayam Goreng, changed the fish head to fish slice and ordered an extra chap chye coz there were 3 of us.

The assam fish smelled absolutely tantalising and had the right balance of tanginess and spicy flavour to it. For those who enjoy fish head and would savour it to the bone, you'll probably enjoy every bit of the fish head soaked in this gravy.

The ngo hiang was pretty good altho it seem a tad "fair" and perhaps not as fragrant and flavourful as others I've tried.

Ayam goreng tasted better than it looked since it does look a tad dry. And the chap chye, relatively bland in comparison to the others rounded up a well-balanced meal.

Complimentary desserts of nonya kuehs were provided as well which I thought was a nice touch.

In all, I'll say this place would be a peranakan quick fix for me (our dishes WERE served within 5 mins of us ordering it)

As we approach the lunch hour, the office crowd was streaming into the 2 food outlets flanking either side of this peranakan joint. Not one other diner came into this place though! We were the only 3 diners the whole time ...and possibly the rest of the day!

Does everyone else know something that we don't???

I also recommend this place for
Type of meal:Lunch, Dinner
Occasion:Children/Family
Atmosphere:Quiet/Peaceful

Like the part about the Monster-in-law. I suppose you don't know that Pernakan mother-in-laws are all matriachs and expect their d-in-law to cook for them NOT eat only.
