| good enough brunch but service leaves much to be desired
We decided to pop by mimolette (finally) for some brunch on saturday, yesterday and while the food was in general, reasonable, as mentioned above their service staff quite clearly needs to be better educated in both professionalism and service.
in any case, on to the food first and we had:
Croque madame - a brioche slice, topped with shredded ham and cheese - gratinated. The madame comes with a topping of fried egg.
Scones - a traditional english scone served with fresh creme and homemade preserve
The mini mimolette wagyu burger - two burgers, one with onion marmalade and the other with sauteed mushrooms
I had the scone and the croque madam. the scone was a pleasant surprise - size wise. They were also very generous with the fresh cream, adorn with raspberries, blueberries and a few slices of cut strawberries. i dont care much for jam or fruit preserves, so i did not try the fruit preserve (probably raspberry and orange) save for one or two licks but i think the raspberry had too strong a cinnamon taste and the orange did taste pretty good. My partner (big serabeth's fan) thought it was the contrary and preferred the raspberry. but it was quite clear he didnt think it was anything that great either. Anyhow, the scone while big, contained raisins which i had to pick out individually. Thankfully however, there was not trace of cinnamon in the scone. I thought the scone was above average.
Again, when the croque madam was served i was rather pleased by the size of the dish. imagine two big slices of brioche (rather soft and plain tasting) topped with shredded ham and cheese, and a poached egg on each slice. also came with a serving of salad (consisting mainly of arugula) with a rather tasty vinaigrette. But well, i dont think the salad particularly complemented the croque madame - its just something they put there to serve alongside the croque madame.
My partner had the wagyu burger and while it was generally quite enjoyable, it was sadly let down by the limpid, soggy fries served alongside. The fries were really so sad looking, it was quite the turn off. Some of them had also black spots, which again kicked off my eat rotten potato get cancer fear. The beef was tender and juicy, though personally i like my meat well done and blood free. My partner, while not wowed, thought his meal was okay.
we didnt have any drinks, because nothing on the drinks menu appealed, and they did not have any special brunch type drinks menu - it was just the generic drinks menu for lunch and dinner, which i didnt think was quite appropriate. dismal selection of teas, coffees and no hot chocolate. fail. also disappointing was the fact you cant order toast, and they will not accomodate any orders. They'll just direct you to their "bread basket" at $12. Similarly, no yoghurt or anything of the like on the brunch menu.
Ambience wise, i think the inside of this restaurant (not the bar area which was blocked off) did look very nice and quaint. think dark wood, white linen, white washed walls. i think it it would be quite nice to have like an engagement party or wedding lunch inside (the outside is too hot!) but seating capacity is obviously limited.
My problem with mimolette lies with the lack of professionalism and knowledge of its staff. Well to begin with, if they are running an upmarket establishment, im sorry, but i have to take issue with what their waitstaff wears - i really dont think denim shorts, tshirts and track shoes is an appropriate uniform. Second, it did feel as though the waitstaff were just milling about and not prompt or observant when it came to things like refilling of glasses of water. Billing was extremely slow, if youre in a rush you better ask for it half an hour in advance. Finally, we were using the restopass discount - basically a booklet of restaurants where you get a one time 30% discount, and the restaurant will chop and sign at the bottom of the page in the booklet to show that you've been there and you cant use it again. Well, what our wonderful staff at mimolette did - apart from being clueless about this discount despite being one of the participating restaurant in a promotion which was heavily publicised, was to rip out the page in our restopass booklet such that we can no longer use the discount for another restaurant (being Michelangelo's) that was printed on the overside (two restaurants share one page). So effectively, by tearing out that page, mimolette has deprived us of our discount at another restaurant. Totally perfect. ridiculous.
So anyway, its a nice place, but in my opinion their waitstaff should all be retrained. professionally, because it seems like they havent undergone any formal training at all. |
