304 Orchard Road, #03-39/43 Lucky Plaza, Singapore
cheap and good

An Indonesian friend recommended this place to me, and it did not disappoint!

The joint is the sort of hole-in-the-wall outfit you'd expect to find in the back row of shops on the 3rd floor of Lucky Plaza. BTW, stepping into Lucky Plaza always makes me feel like a tourist in some other SEA country, a world away from the swanky malls of Orchard Road. This feeling continues right through to this restaurant (if you can call it that). It's small and cramped (though they seem to have opened an extension a few doors away to cope with the crowd), you sit on stools and share tables if you have to, while all around you, people jabber on in Bahasa, Tagalog, Chinese and English in equal measure. The service is friendly and we were given menus to browse while waiting. Thankfully, as it was a weekday night at about 8pm, we only waited 5 min before we got our little table space.

Since this place is called Ayam Bakar Ojolali, we ordered ayam bakar (duh). We also ordered an ikan bakar and a sour soup with veggies in it (I'm sorry I can't remember if there was a specific name to it! It's NOT sop buntut.) All were very good. The chicken and fish were both nicely done -- not dried out, as is wont to happen in some other places -- and the tongue-on-fire hot sambal provided a great kick. But what was really shiok was the sweet kicap-manis-based sauce they slathered all over the chicken and fish -- it was really, really good. The soup was also very tasty with just the right touch of sourness.

For drinks, we had the pink coconut drink because the avocado was all sold out :( The pink coconut is essentially just strips of young coconut swimming in rose syrup. Refreshing, and visually very pleasing, but I was really craving the avocado drink and found the pink coconut rather normal and unexciting.

The best part of course is that it's inexpensive -- I think about $6 per main dish and $4 for the soup (I can't remember exactly!)

A great place for a satisfying quick bite before you step back out into Orchard Road, Singapore.
